Hey, I've seen alot of maps redone, or edited, like 2fort for example, and I'd like to do that, but all the proggies I've used for decompiling maps makes them all cut up. Anyone know of another program thats more better to decompile?

Nope and that's a good thing.
If you're skilled enough then decompile the map and group blocks together and simply map over it, clip or whatever and then delete the decompiled block.

It's a long process but it works out well.

Do you want to add to an existing map and release it or are you going to use the decompiled map as a reference for something from scratch?

Why make a remake? :(

Remake the map from scratch, its not as hard as you think.

If it's your own i can understand it... But take someone elses map and get credit for it? Well maybe if it's a problem in the map that everyone is pissed on, then i can understand it.

only common maps such as 2fort, or avanti. not others peoples maps. Just valves.

I want to remake some parts of the maps.

WinBspC is the most accurate decompiler, although it still cuts things up and is quite buggy.

Decompile with it and do, what Habboi said.

Actually, there is another decompiler on the internet that works a little bit better than WinBspC.

Its called BspTwoMap. It still breaks up the atchitecture, but not as bad as WinBsp. I prefer BspTwoMap over WinBsp.

Doesn't it cut up everything into small brushes of 1 unit thickness? If BSP2MAP and WINBsp are merged we would have a good decompiler, but that would suck for honest mappers :P.

The best solution, unless its something like 2fort, is to ASK THE PERSON WHO MADE IT. Ive given out the source files to loads of my maps because people asked nicely.

It does that, but the general shape of a brush is still recognisable. Basically its doing it the way how Hallow works: it takes all brushes and hollows it with 1 unit thick sides. Thats fine by me.

True words, Joba. Decompiling and using it for your own is considered stealing. But of course, decompiling just for reference is ok.

You should still ask the mapper to feed their bulging egos :P

Heh.. 've decompiled every HL1 SP map with it. It's the best decompiler, if you need to see the ent work, although the texture alignment and objects are totally messed up.

ASK THE PERSON WHO MADE IT
Yeah right...that would never work :P

Actually people are pretty stupid about refusing to release the source files, so I usually always just decompile the thing. The only thing that sucks, is that some maps won't decompile for me :(

I like the quote that goes something like:

it's impossible to invent new things, only reinterpret them...

^^So true.

Maps compiled with -onlyents after compiling full once will be decompile-protected.
