Right now KinetiX is using HL2 mp3's converted to wavs but their old and dull. I want to create my own tracks for this mod. So...

I have a few questions concerning music in HL1.

1.) What is the best and cheapest (even free) software for the creation of music.

2.) What is the best way to implement this music into a mod without coding an MP3 player into it? Coverting to wavs?

I actually want to create my own music from scratch so I'm after an application for that purpose.

Having said that the tutorial is helpful so thanks. :D

Do you want to actually record live instruments?

If you just want loops, I'd say GarageBand, but obviously your not on a Mac. Try Acid or Fruity Loops ( :D ).

FL: teh hard. :/
Reason 3: even teh harder. :/:/:/

Also, is this mod for vanilla HL or vanilla HL and Steam? If you're making it for Steam, i can code mp3 support for you (new point entity: trigger_playmp3). The only problem is, that this entity will only work in Steam HL, not vanilla HL.

I use fruity loops, it's a piece of piss. It's probably the easiest music software available imo

Tried Fruity loops and Ill be damned if I understand it. :nervous:

@Muzz: Using Vanilla HL. (well...Spirit) :(

(I imagine there will be a help wanted thread for this mod soon. :)

I believe Spirit allready has a mp3 playing entity. Ask Rim.

Fruity Loops Studio 5 is what i use. Its not that hard if you have worked with midi sequencers in the past. The software isn't the hardest part, its making the music. sometimes it just doesn't flow out.

Sometimes is does.

Either way, get whatever you want, its your music and your mod.

Yes, Version 1.4 and higher of Spirit uses Fmod, where you can setup a folder for MP3's and other media.

There is a catch, however. Once you begin playing the music, you cannot stop it and it repeats endlessly. You can interrupt it with another track tho. I'm using this cautiously in 6D. Originally I think fmod was intended for ambient soundtracks and not music, like in Natural Selection.

Just to note: Music is a something I shall never offer to do for someone. Bottomline.

Fruity loops is just like VHE. It seems very hard at first but you get use to it after it. But instead of making your own music.(which is very hard, believe meh! But if you still want to try contact me on msn and I'll teach you the basics. I made 5 tracks)
If you change your mind, visit http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/
it really has good tracks that is very usable for games (made for flash but why not use it for a real game?)

Agreed.
The newgrounds audio section's pretty huge.
You should really find the music, that you're looking for (unless you need something really specific).

@Rim: Half-Life's CD audio was the same. It continued too play until interupted. I think that is why there was a track 1 even though there wasn't actually any music on it. I was just a blank track that played for 10 minutes.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but you can also use any of the E-Jay variants to make music. Doesn't take a lot of knowledge or time to make music with this program (well, version 3 and below, anyway). Of course, it's not really advanced, and the one I have, Techno EJay 3, crashes often.
