People are just acting like assholes cos they think it's cool to hate America.
I realised today that I dislike american television because of the generic american accent

Bandwagon ahoy!

Would it be possible for anyone here to describe the American accent? I can't imagine what it sounds like to you because I'm American, but I'm sure most of you foreigners notice something. If it's posible to describe, I'm interested in reading it.

Oh I'm very familiar with the northern(New Yawkars drink cawfee) and southern(cue banjo) but I thought there was also just a generic American accent, kinda like the generic British accent. Most of the people I know here and on the other side of the US when I lived in California for a few years didn't have an accent at all as far as I could tell. They just kinda... talked.

To put a quick example. Words that end with the letter "r" are pronounced differently in American and UK English. For example 'Winter' is pronounced 'wintr in the U.S, but in the UK it is 'wint? with a final undetermined vowel (or however you call that. I used to know how to write phonetics...)

It might be true, but that's one of the main differences that foreigners see between both. I lived two years in California, and the English sounded very different to UK english.
Just take any film, and in minutes you can tell if the actors are mostly American or British.

Everybody knows that Russians have the greatest accents of all.

Russians, hell yeah!

I don't watch too much British film, but now that I think about it I know exactly what you mean.

I have spoken to a Scottsman and an Englishman, and I note no noticeable difference either.
You're deaf, kek. I mean, seriously, it's like 2 different languages. Almost.

America: 1
Everyone else: 0

You mean the Americans actually won a debate? Theres a first...

Isn't it funny how first the service discrimination topic, and then this, has slowly but surely slid off topic?

You don't win debates and this wasn't a debate so yeah, no. Regarding this thread and December 7, sure, let whoever they want make threads about whatever they want. I mean, no one has more or less "right" to celebrate days or honour memories or whatever. This is an open forum. It's interesting to think what the reactions would've been if it were a small European country's holiday, though.

You lead us to believe that there are no memorial days in small European countries Zombieman... Is this so?
Apart from November 11th (end of either WWII or WWI, i forget which), which is pretty much universal in Europe, Britain doesn't have that many memorial days, at least not as far as i can remember. We have Guy fawkes night, but thats more "lets burn him" thing.
Jeez people. Its a memorial thread, not a holiday to honor evil.
Quote where it was proclaimed as a holiday of evil and we'll - or at least i will admit that i was wrong.

Well, you should have given some more info for us that dont keep record of the history of U.S.A. Otherwise i dont quite mind, though i doubt it really fits in a forum, it is more ir less a journal thingie.

We have one rememberance day here for the fallen of all wars on may the 5th, one day before we got liberated by the allied forces.

You're the only one capable of acknowledging your errors. Its only my job to mention them.
Isn't quoting it mentioning my errors and the me acknowledging them we be for me to admit it was an error? And not to acknowledge would be to argue it or shake it off?

Besides, im lazy, im tired and i've learnt why chocolate logs and coke don't go together. So im really not gunna go through pages of tripe to find some little bits of wording.

I don't remember anyone posting a remembrance thread here, no. Some debates and shit, yes, but not really anything to honour the dead. Just doesn't seem to fit well on an international forum. What's the point, anyway? Honouring would mean throw a parade or wear a button on your jacket, not to create threads that no one should post in.

It's a valid topic of conversation. The general board is for general discussion for everyone, not solely for topics about modding or gaming. It's not just for Europeans or Americans or anyone else. You can talk about whatever the fuck you want in here (within reason), and I think this is easily within reason. I don't see why not. You guys can have threads about your national days of rememberance and I wouldn't go bash them - I don't really think they serve a purpose but it's still a valid topic of conversation.

If you guys don't agree with the thread or don't think its useful then just ignore it, that's not too difficult, yeah?

I'm all for discussions and debate, but remembrance and honouring? Meh.

Anyway, yeah, you can post about (nigh) anything on the forums, but everyone else is just as free to express their opinion about it and the thread itself, no? Ergo, no one is allowed to whine about anything, including whining, only they are, because it's an open forum.
