OK, time to have a second one. In the absence of kol, I'll be posting this one, but he's still around, aye?

Engine HL1

Download this base map

You have to extend the map after the large observation window cover called "the_curtain" by adding whatever you want to have behind it. Change whatever you want in the existing section, as long as you keep the general layout.

Other rules:
The new area should not be accessble, i.e., this will be an observation point or whatever you make it. So basicly you have to build scenery in this compo.
Rules of the previous competition apply as well.

You have untill Friday 11th so GET YOUR ARSES MAPPING.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-01 10:09:38 UTC Post #220584
Sounds good, except:
The new area should not be accessble
Whats the point of extending the map if you're not allowed to access it? :/

Muzzle, having areas in a level the player can't reach gives a feeling like the map isn't just another maze of corridors the player is stuck in. Having a whole corridor, room or even objects the player can't reach makes everything feel bigger, like he is in a whole world.

For example:
Having normal cliffs to close up the map is ok, but when there are trees on top and a few building the player can't even reach is much better. :)

I was thinking different, i got the point. :)

I've made a door and when you keep walking up to it, you hear a VOX saying "access denied" and more stuff like that, but if you keep trying, you'll eventually piss off the VOX. xD.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-01 12:07:49 UTC Post #220603
I thought the VOX does that automatically.

Yes, its just an entity property, but it isn't used much.

Looks nice. Work on the ceiling a bit more and the floor as well even. Just add little things that make it seem busy and yet nicely spaced out at the same time.

Right, so does that mean we have to add something beyond the red door that stops the player from walking through it?
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-02 03:39:19 UTC Post #220682
I'll give this one a go, finishes on my B'day as well :o
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-02 04:56:53 UTC Post #220685
Well, I think I'll have to make another post, in order to clarify things, because the terms I used caused much "disturbance" (on IRC, atleast).

I called the red curtain "door", because that's what it is, a func_door. From now on, we'll refer to it as a "window", because that makes it much easier to understand the idea of inaccessibility of the second area.

I don't see how people couldn't understand that from first glance, this will deduct from your score!

Also, glad to see all those entries ^_^

I think I'll enter this compo just wondering if you're entering a map do you just submit it to the map vault

I'm really liking how this is starting to look,
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-02 16:09:10 UTC Post #220748
Tetsuo:
software mode reminds me of Metal Gear Solid. Almost looks like it with those shades which isn't bad. It looks cold to me.

The sides of the holes in the ceiling could use a good trim texture.
Also, i'd like to see some spots of light on the side of the floor coming from those small light fixture you see usually.

But keep the cool tones, I like it a lot.

OK, people, as I've been informed, some members have had problems with their entires and they requested that the deadline be extended by one day. So you have some extra time to polish your maps untill midnight GMT on Saturday 12th of May. If you forgot to add something, now is the time.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-12 10:49:28 UTC Post #221723
Awesome. Thanks for the extra time. I polished up my map a bit more.

I just want to clear something up muzzleflash told me that my entry would not be judged if there were any missing wads but the only wads used that came up are the xeno wad opfor wad zhlt wad and of course half life wad
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-12 12:35:15 UTC Post #221734
You don't need to include zhlt.wad textures. They're included automatically. Other than that, anything other than standard half-life textures need to be -wadincluded.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-12 13:28:44 UTC Post #221735
Xeno wad should already be in everyones the valve folder and I thought only a small minority of people didnt have the opfor wad
Edit:Okay i've found the problem and fixed it so there should be no problem with wads now sorry about all this

I'm kinda dissapointed after so much people said they'll take part and we end up having just two entries. Even though we've extended the deadline, Dred Furst didn't submit his map, for reasons unknown.

You guys lost the enthusiasm or got tired or something? Was the competition theme not good? Whatever it is, I guess we all need a break. I was hoping someone from IRC would do the juding, since I have to take care of several important projects and wont be home during the upcomming week or so, but people tend to be lazy. So, calling for backup from the forum regulars to check out the maps, I mean, it's just two of them, sure you can spare 15 minutes to write a short review.

In the mean time, make up your minds what you want the next minicompo to be (in case you even want another).
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-14 15:07:45 UTC Post #221971
So is anyone going to judge the entrys

Mapping from a base = pewp
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-14 15:55:03 UTC Post #221981
Well, you get tired of mapping fairly quickly. Two mini-compos this close to each other? Meh. Also, the theme for the first compo was excellent - after all, all we do is map hallways, so it's an easy one to attach to, if you know what I mean.
This one was a bit vague.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-14 23:17:40 UTC Post #222009
Yeah. I have to agree with ZL. I've barely had time to work on my own projects.

Why would some people say the two minicompos were so close to each other when on the last minicompo thread people were saying make a new minicompo soon and also I guess it can just be said that no one wants to judge the entrys so I guess there is no need for the thread to be still stickied
