Ive been mapping for only hl1 for a long time but i want to start mapping for hl2. The computer that i currently own becomes laggy while mapping for hl1 and playing it and the graphics arent realy that good so I have saved up enough money to buy my own computer but dont have a clue where to start. All I can say is, I want a computer capable of mapping for "hl2" and hl1 without becoming laggy, good graphics, no laggy game play, a router to get net conection from my parents comp at home, and all i need is the "comp"well and router. I already have plenty of keyboards and mouses and screens and stuff. Please help me out in finding a good computer but not too expensive! Also i was wondering if by choosing to start mapping for hl2, Can I make much more complex maps for example, an entire house with all accesories in every room? or is it not that greater than hl1... btw i have 1000 dollars to spend but really would like to spend "as little as possible" like 400-600 range if possible" thanks a lot.

Are we talking about building a computer or buying one?

Hmmm.. thats a lot of power for a little money. You can try newegg.com and look at towers for sale. Get a good processor(i love my dual core, but amd64's arent bad at all either) you'll want something that's 2.0ghx pushing 2.30ghz, a lot of ram(1gig +), and have some pci slots for future card upgrades. Thats my best advice.

That's a good one for the money i beleive. This was just a quick newegg hunt. like.. 2 minutes worth of hunting. So check out the site, and just let us know of anything you're thinking of getting. I think m0p and alex9b know more than i about power

Yeah its $200 out of your price range but i bet you can take a loan from "the bank of your parents". Low interest i hope.

Buying a built computer is never a good idea in any case.

1,000 dollars can get you a quad core with a 8800. You just gotta build it.

I would not know the first thing about building a pc of my own. I can like.. install videocards but thats about it. I couldn't trust myself installing equipment like that.

i think my computer has duo proccessors each running at 1.56 GHz uh i realy dont know crap about comps, what if i just got better graphics card, would that help it not be laggy?

You wouldn't lag in Hammer for HL if you had dual cores.

Here, right click on My Computer and go to properties. See what it says as a CPU.

Alienware's designs are hideous.

Buy the parts seperately, assemble it yourself. It's not that hard.

I need a cheap PC that can hold its own against tomorrow's games.

ALienware seems like the way to go with the monthly payment option. However OverClockers is so much cheaper.

Or just place a bid for this little fella

I have had Zero problems with my Dell notebook.
My specs:
XPS M1210 (12.1 Inch screen (Ouch, I know))
2gig Ram
2Ghz Dual Core Centrino
80gig HD
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400

It packs a little punch i may say.
All of it cost around 2,400 USD
And i think it's worth it.

12.1 inches? That's a size for airline seats, not daily usage. I have a 15.4" widescreen here and it seems small.

12.1 isnt too bad. After the lasic eye surgery i can see it perfectly.

Hah kidding.
I'm getting a desktop in a few years once i can afford one.

I've read a review on one of their computers and since that moment i judt don't like them anymore. The tech support is absolute shit.

Alienware's owned by DELL, what'd you expect? :P
Posted 17 years ago2007-06-02 19:26:35 UTC Post #224262
Aleinware has always sucked, Dell only bought them recently. They made solid computers, but the "alien" theme got old and their prices were at least $1000 mroe than if you built one yourself.
