Go check it all out - honestly, it'll scare you, intrigue you, or amuse you - or all of those.

I never thought for a minute just how brainwashed these people are. That scared me. When I look at the followers' facial expressions, they all look the same. They look as though they are drugged up zombies.
They all seem to repeat the same mantras, have the same responses and the same refusal to listen to anything that contradicts their belief.

Also, of you haven?t already seen it - go see the BBC Panorama investigation into Scientology, 'Scientology And Me'. The BBC reporter does all he can to politely investigate the church, but is faced with harassment and stalking. Toward the end, he eventually loses it and starts yelling in the leader's face - and I fully support this. I would too.

Now you know why Tom Cruise is such a bootlicker.

I already know how screwed up and evil the Cult of Scientology is.

It should be removed from Earth, with fire.

Scientology is such bullshit, as well as personally offending. All that stuff about "no chemical imbalance" I know personally to be complete bullshit.

It's an utterly shameful, cowardly, and wicked 'cult' and I hope it's founding memebers and leaders who are knowingly abusing the rights and freedoms of vulnerable people go to hell where they damn well belong.

I just watched people being interviewed about their previous indoctrination into the group, and it honeslty shocked me. I felt angry and appauled about what they do to them.

I'd love to challenge these bastards.

Luke:

The media loves to harp on (incredibly rare) suicidal cults. Besides the fact that it's a death and gloom type of story, there's a "satanic"/ drugs/ mind control connection to reinforce cult stereotypes. There's a very obvious slant againist non-mainstream religions in mainstream news.

There will always be idiots. And hell, if they're rich and famous AND dumb as dirt - why not take advantage of it?
Now, of course, I'm not pro-scientology, but as long as there'll be hopeless brainraped dipshits paying shitloads of cash to imagine that everything will suddenly change - scientology will prosper. It's that simple. And the fact that we have so many jackasses all over the world (even Europe!) that lack the tiniest bit of common sense still amazes me.

Its more than a matter of money and intellect to the "higher thetans" in Scientology. People's lives are turned to garbage because of this crap. I'm talking about those in opposition to it, not the ones giving money to the church. And it isn't uncommon for opposers to be killed.

Scientology deserves all the negative attention it can get. I understand and appreciate your point in general - but making it also implies that you don't know much specifically about Scientology.

This may be just my opinion, but damn, look up "Lisa McPherson" and read about her. And then tell me you don't agree with me.

He doesn't, because Dave is in fact a scientologist, and possibly the one responsible for her murder.

It seems like people are straying a bit from the classical religious views. It sounds to me like more ignorance, but the self-righteousness and the belief in one's self and guaranteed immortality sounds good for the age we live in today. I'm christian raised but relying on something/someone that is intangible and unknown involves much more faith than some would care to give, especially when society wants results fast.

People love to believe in shit, whatever that shit may be, because we just don't know about what happens after death. We have a natural mindset that we might as well believe in something just in case.

A real problem with any religion is that the followers of each one believe that their way is the right way. If you believe so, some will fight for it. Like crusades and jihads or the like.

I know what happens after death.

The corpse decomposes, so the bacteria have a food source.

This is why I am a such a fan of string theory. Even though its science, you can pretty much place any given religion into it logically, and it will fit :D

Hey man, believe what you will and let others do the same. Its a philosophy to live by. You can't know, you can only believe, and to truly believe is to be open to the idea that you can be wrong :)

Amen to that :D .

As the 20th and 21st centuries have progressed, increasing numbers of people have resorted to mystical and magical thinking, like the Medeval Age, instead of scientific and logical. Like Rimrook was saying, people will believe what they have to get the aforementioned 'results' quickly. I must say, though that it's interesting how you rarely see scientific 'evangelists' on TV, but there are easily 3 or 4 channels on my cable service completely devoted to religious evangelism. :nuke:
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-29 22:21:38 UTC Post #233111
I don't think an increasing amount of people are taking wild fiction over science these days. Scientology has definitely grown a lot, but that isn't representative of the world as a whole.
I smell a debate. Lez get it on!

Well by "increasing numbers," I meant that they're bigger than they were in, say, the 1920's. It isn't to say that they're the majority (but I can and probably will find out now :D )

That's just what happens to the body after death. Religion never give a damn about the actual body, it's the soul that counts. So actualy, scientology might be the truth for all we know, not very likely sence it's a load of crap, but we just don't know, do we?

Hunter, that's such a narrow outlook on things. Who defines common sense? Human? What the fuck do humans know? Moreover, what the fuck do humans know about what humans know?
You should really open your mind to the possibility that maybe there really is more out there. Like I said before, part of believing, nay, knowing is being able to consider that you might be wrong. Nobody is forcing you to believe that there is something there, but at least be open to the concept.
I mean really. The way you just outright say that you, in fact, know for sure that religion is a bunch of bullshit is just as bad as someone telling you that religion is absolute. You can't dispprove the non-existence of something.
In the grand scheme of things, your beliefs are just as likely as anyone else's. Tosse is right, it really is just just as likely that this theory of thetans is the truth. Its also just as likely that Allah is the true god, and that muslims are right. And even further, String Theory tells us that all these beliefs are simultaneously correct because of the multiverse.
Open your mind and explore the possibilities

That'd be funny.

I can see it now - a huge white-bearded guy with a briefcase full of documents bursting through some laboratory doors waving a sample of Jesus...shouting "Stop everything!"

But more seriously....the more you know...the more you know you don't know.

The reason I belive in christianity is that it is a religion that persues all morals as the standard to what is considered riteousness to God. Some religions belive that it is right to kill people from other religions while christianity says "Thou shall not kill." Period. Theres nothing in christianity that I have found yet to contradict itself. Thow this is true, Don't look at people who say they are christians but dont act upon it because they are the ones that make people decide that we are just a bunch of fake people. And not many but almost all the people I know are fake in that they dont stay true to their words, curse all the time, litter, start fights, flick off other drivers, gossip constantly, don't help others whenever they get a chance, and " Go to church every sunday!" Many people are like this but some are actually "Real" and true to their words.

There's some strange stuff in the bible. I know, plucked out of context and without consideration it really doesn't prove anything (I hang in #jesus a lot), but it's still a funny couple of quotes.

(NIV)
Deuteronomy 7:1-2 -When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations . . . then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy.

Contradictions:
2 Kings 2:11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
John 3:13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven?the Son of Man.

John 5:31 If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.
John 8:14 Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid.

Sorry but I have to correct you on this. Thou shall not murder is the commandment. War and the like are exceptions. God orders killings all the time, as is evident from the text cited by Loffe here.
I just had to point that out :)
Anyway, where's Jahzel on all this> I thought for sure he would be going mad crazy with the conspiracies by now.

I've just made a new religion called The Church of Fostex.
We believe in a supreme being who created us all by playing a really sick solo on guitar.

WOW IT'S THAT EASY TO MAKE BULLSHIT APPEAR.

But its also potentially true. Its a wild and seemingly absurd statement, but hell, what if? What if 2 seconds ago some insane guitar player ripped it up and pulled te greatest guitar solo out of his ass? The awesomeness of his solo created vibration in the space-time continuum and ultimately created this little planet, Earth, inhabited by billions of creatures, humans, all created with these memories of the past, which never really happened because they were created 2 seconds ago.

What do you think caused the physical world to come into existence, Hunter? The big bang, maybe? What the fuck, how illogical is that? A giant explosion that somehow creates an entire, perfect, infinite universe? Oh right, it can be backed up by saying its one big bang after another, but really. What are the odds that we exist in this one universe created out of the virtually infinite that have preceeded us? Are those odds so definite, so in your favor, that you would say that its more likely that the big bang happened than, say, a superbeing simply calling a universe into existence?

See what I'm getting at here? You can't base theories like this on logic, its one of the very few things that absolutely defies all human logic. But you're sitting here telling us that if we believe these other things, then we're wrong because it doesn't make logical sense to you. Again, it's no better than a religion trying to force their ideals onto others. If anything, it's worse, because it makes you hypocritical.

We can only decide what we think is most probable.

Personally I think we might all be living in a petri dish on the workbench of some huuuuuuuge alien scientist.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-30 15:21:39 UTC Post #233162
Yup.

I personally like the guitar solo theory.

One i came up with one day is that the universe is actually one of an infinite number that are like the "molicules" of an even bigger one. Think about it, planets and solar systems are like atoms!
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-30 15:28:09 UTC Post #233163
Think about it, planets and solar systems are like atoms!
I debated this at length with a friend one night over several bottles of wine. It was a most entertaining discussion which lasted all night, although the ending conclusions we drew are a bit fuzzy now. We were slaughtered by the time we gave up.

I think we decided that it was an appealing theory, given the apparent similarities between solar systems and atomic structures - that every atom inside every piece of material could be another planet, solar system, galaxy or even a new universe.

But then we realised that humans have been able to look at atoms in minute detail for some time.

As far as I know, no-one has ever found an atom populated by microscopic people :D

But then - perhaps our microscopes aren't as l33t at we think they are ;)

Or, all the Universes are deserted.

You seriously can go quite round the bend thinking about this one.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-30 15:34:56 UTC Post #233165
Yeah I think pretty much everyone has thought of the "universal molecules" at one point or another :P A lot of people use that as a basis for intelligent design.

From wikipedia's article, "Scientology beliefs and practices", section "The tone scale:
Later this scale was expanded to represent spiritual states that go beyond human manifestation. These states are represented with the values from negative forty (-40) to forty (40). Forty represents "Serenity of Beingness" and negative forty represents what is best described as "Epic" failure.
