Teehee.

I think the one in the microwave was actually a tea cup, but I get the idea.

I plan to get it soon, and I plan to play TF2.

However, TF2 users have been porting FF maps over without permission. That kinda says something about the community to me.

Nonetheless, I will give TF2 a fair chance. There. Now move along. No more "bitch slap" exchanges, as another forum goer put it, please.

Portal looks like my kinda game, though. Episode 2 looks cool, like the vehicular stuff. Still, no new weapons makes no sense.

Still, no new weapons makes no sense.
It does, actually. Valve focus more on bringing the story and gameplay forward in exciting ways, rather than just giving players something new to kill people with. It's pretty much the most important thing that differentiates these episodes from crappy game expansions.

I admit a new gun or two would be nice, but ultimately it's unnecessary.

Well, I am getting 3 games for the price of one, so I won't complain.

As for my TF2 qualms, if the removal of grenades really ends up bothering me, I wouldn't be surprised if a server side mod that turns it into the old formula pops up. It's bound to happen.

Personally, that's what I think they should of done: made grenades an option. That way, it's left up to the server mod's preference. Both the old player's and new players are happy. I plan to pick up the Orange Box tomorrow. So, that'll be my final word on the matter.

That, and Halo 3, COD 4, and the UT3 Beta will all have my attention, unless TF2 really blows me away.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 00:04:35 UTC Post #236257
no. grenades would ruin it. TF2 is balanced, EP2 doesn't need extra weapons, and the cake is a lie.

Yes, exactly my point.

A fucking 75 pound scout shouldn't be able to easily take on a 200 pounder HWGuy and win. If I wanted balanced stuff like that, I would play a simple game of Team Deathmatch. Simple.

Anyway, it's only a matter of time until a server mod pops up. I'm learning C/C++, and if I ever somehow get the amount of skill needed, I would make it in a heartbeat (well, make the decision to make it,anyway.)

Finally...

What.

Is with.

The fucking.

CAKE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! :o

Gahh!! It's like on TV, where the kid doesn't see the movie, and everyone else does, and they know all the cultural references, and the kid does not.

Just don't spoil it for me.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 00:41:54 UTC Post #236259
I personally (even though I haven't picked up the orange box yet) think EP2 doesn't and never would have any reason for new weapons... especially seeing as it wouldn't make much sense... I can see them sending in the new enemies in EP2 as more logic on combine part, but why would they send in new weapons for gordon to kill them with? Unless of course the rebels invited a new weapon and SOME HOW just so HAPPENED to have it with them when they stumbled upon freeman...

it just makes sense like that!
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 01:14:29 UTC Post #236260
Skeetz, tf2 > you. Tf was never meant to be balanced, being unbalanced was a good thing in tfc, made it more comical when everything blew up 24/7. Strategy sux :D
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 02:51:29 UTC Post #236261
And "a certain micro-wave casserole." Anyone remember that?
That was probably the biggest loose end to be cleared up in Episode 2. I always wondered whose casserole (erm... alien gib) that was...
I think the one in the microwave was actually a tea cup
Well, you're wrong...

By the way, I wonder if the Antlion caves will have any effect on how Xen will look in Black Mesa? I'm sure everyone knows from the videos that they're very similar to the Xen caves in Half-Life.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 12:19:59 UTC Post #236301
Skeetz is back making dumbass statements again.

Great.

A scout can take a 200 pound HW guy because IT'S BALANCED.
Balance makes the game FUN.

Therefore FUN = BALANCE.

Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 12:34:16 UTC Post #236302
Well I'm not sure. I mean I think the balancing is fine and a HW can kill a Scout easily but I feel the Scout can be used quite well up close as he can jump around them real fast and I feel that could be tweaked a little. But it is fun running around with a bat owning everyone :D

The scout can be killed very easily, which is made up with speed and agility. Why would that need to be tweaked? It's not like the bat kills on one hit.

I lol'd at those, Espen. They were pretty random.

Now, slight spoilers ahead:

I'd like to say that I played through the whole thing in one sitting with almost all the settings turned up to max, and resolution at 1440x900, and the only time I EVER encountered slowdown was if I had my flashlight on, or when the portal blast things swept past. Valve did an incredible job optimizing this game, although it came at some costs. You'll notice throughout that they've used some rather cheap outdoor mapping techniques that are reminiscent of GoldSrc maps, including those damned 2D transparent trees, and some pretty obvious skybox blending. This is no ET:QW, and it's still outdone in the graphics department by Counter-Strike Source's Militia.

Still, barreling down old roads in that bastardized Charger, I could hardly care how fake the distant trees looked. :)
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-13 20:09:04 UTC Post #236332
I noticed that, too. I decided to noclip around in some maps and found there was no skybox.

But, with those tiny downfalls, the game was flawless, and ran perfectly.

I didn't get the game today (I fell asleep.) I'm gonna try to get it tomorrow.

My point exactly. You haven't played the game, and you're shooting it down like an idiot.

I'll start a flame war until you bring a valid argument to the table. Otherwise, do us all a favor, and shut the fuck up; keeping your dumb comments to yourself.

To Espen: Didn't they say that model was gonna be a joke that would replace the the Strider Buster waaaay back in an old video?

Anyway yeah the first thing that caught my eye was the view of the Citadel and how you could see the edges...However I ran on Medium so it might have stood out more.

Still visuals don't always interest me. It's gameplay / story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Perhaps, but if you don't focus on a single tree, the entire outdoor areas look stunning. I never thought Source could look so good. Besides, compare one of the open areas of Episode Two to one of the coast maps of Half-Life 2. Equal performance, 1000x improved environments. The benefits definitely out-weigh the costs.

Funny, I didn't actually mind the coast, but everyone else seems to think they were shit. Sure they were mostly empty, but it was realistic.

The coast was fine by me... it was a coast, what can you do with it?

D

Posted 17 years ago2007-10-14 21:41:46 UTC Post #236373
The coast is a mess of ugly textures, cheap water and blocky displacements. I'm really glad about these engine improvements.

making water look realistic is a whole other project in itself. and the coast was VERY open, im surprised they did as well as they did. especially considering it was 2004, and it still outdoes some present day games in graphics and gameplay by far.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-14 21:56:19 UTC Post #236375
Nice looking coastal water is not (despite it's problems) beyond the Source engine, the water used in the coast levels just looks lazy. And let's not forget the ridiculously short fog distance.

If Valve were to make a similiar scene with Source's improved tech and Valves new standards, you'd see a huge difference.

Well I didn't think they were shit, but they definitely were sparse. And that make sense, considering the limited power the Source Engine had to render large areas back then. Point is: It was a refreshing change for me to see Valve make maps with such vast and open layouts, and it'll make designing outside maps much easier for us down the road, too.

So yeah, the Orange Box rox my sox.
