Ripped from my PP thread on the same topic - they said I should ask here :D

How legal is it to use content from say - op4/BS in your mod? I've seen a lot of mods do it, but I've always wondered if it would lead to serious repercussions or not.

The last thing I want is an angry letter from valve!

By content, I mean sounds, models, textures.

I'm pretty sure it's OK if the end user owns the content and is required to copy and paste it into the mod directory.

Thank you

I wouldn't see why not. Besides those are technically from Turtlerock.
Besides, chances are, if you do finish and release such a mod yourself, I highly doubt they're going to find it, hunt you down, and yell at you.

Op4 and BS is created by Gearbox Software, not Valve, so i think its ok to use their stuff in your maps.

As long as you don't make money off of it, you're fine. I use a lot of HL2 sounds in my own mod because I can't record some of the sounds I need.

Lulz, saw...

Yeah, and they've been used a whole lot before in other mods too. If Valve ever cared at all about it, they certainly don't care anymore.

Great thanks! I'm not taking this as legal advice btw, but it's certainly a load off my mind...

Valve likes its modders, fortunately. They aren't about to do something that'll piss them off.
