I had a good idea for what I would think would be a fun new mod. If there is enough interest in it then maybe later I'll make it. The idea:

A multiplayer mod where you can choose to be one of dozens of different superheroes (and villains!!) and fight other superhero players. But, with each character, you also have the ability to use all their powers! Each character would have X number of powers, some more than others, others can use the same power different ways. The stronger the attack, the more "Power Points" you use up. Obviously, you would recharge your powers over time and pick up bonuses that give you a quick recharge. But think of the possibilities! Imagine The Hulk and Wolverine doing battle in a destructible arena-like level! Anyway, I think it would be really cool, especially if It could be done in source, then The Hulk can pick up chunks of concrete on the ground left over from when he smashed wolverine into the wall and throw them at Wolverine! Left me know what you think!!

Maybe if it used new and original characters and powers? Would this be Src or GldSrc?
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-26 23:36:46 UTC Post #237078
It would probably be GldSrc as I haven't got my head around the source code yet of Source. By the way, I Googled it and there is a superhero mod around but not released and the home page hasn't had a news post since 2003 so I figured it be pretty dead by now. i would like to do it in source because then I can use the physics system for really cool effects like mentioned above.

and besides, gldsrc is gradually losing support, especially with the release of more and more source games...

I don't care what engine it's on, I don't think I'd play it. It sounds cheesy to me. Actually, whenever I hear about non-original characters or themes (superheroes, cartoon show characters, places/people from movies or other games) being used in mods, it just turns me off.

Same here... i was thinking more along the lines of

A.) A different word than superheroes

B.) Original Characters

More like a mage with spells than a superhero with powers (even a mage sounds bad enough)
Maybe you'll think of something... maybe just the supernatural...

Damn, I was editing. To continue where my last sentence stopped:

...Seriously, get your own content. This doesn't apply when you're expanding upon the universe of the original game, like many Half-Life mods do, but otherwise I think it's boring. Leave the copyrighted crap to the game studios that make official games.

I think the best type of mod is the one where you've actually designed the environments and characters within it on your own.

Seconded.

Of course, it's totally acceptable to have your mod be heavily inspired by themes from other media, but using them directly is not... in my opinion.

Also, yeah, I think considering the scope of this project and your desire to have destructible worlds, it would be far better suited to Source. Actually, it would thrive on it.

Actually, Goldsource and Source would be the wrong engines to do this on. The concept kinda reminds me of City of Heroes and City of Villains. I would play this mod if it used licensed characters, but it'd have to be good.

Aye, I would play it, if it was pulled of well. It's not a bad idea.

Aye. All similar mods ruin the gameplay even more as it is already. Although I do admit that the Zombie mod for 1.6 is quite amusing.

I agree with all of you. I'll make up some new characters and I'll talk about this later on.

Hmmm...Ant, I could be wrong, but I don't think it's supposed to be an MMO. Probably more along the lines of Action Half-Life or The Specialists.

Here are some character ideas:
Robot with jetpack
Big robot dog that bites, have a laser and can self destruct
Alien warrior
Blood spitting alien bug
Human ninja
Human kid with telekinesis abilities

It sounds like you want to make something like Earth's Special Forces or Mech Mod, except more broad.
I don't take to class-based deathmatches very well. Classes really only work in team-based games.

If anything, I'd suggest dynamic powers ala The Specialists. Balance each power with some kind of drawback, and have the players choose the powers from a menu before the spawn. Weaker powers would have weaker drawbacks, and so on.
Dynamic powers would be so much more versatile than preset classes that it's not even funny. You'd be much better off, methinks.

Edit: Or if you insist on sticking to classes, at least make dynamic powers for each class. Robots, humans, aliens, and the like would all need a unique set of powers. Perhaps this would work even better, because every power in the game isn't available to you at one time.

If you actually get this off the ground, I might be able to do some animating for you. Mostly in the v_ models department.

but I don't think it's supposed to be an MMO.
Wasn't suggesting it was, but the way your earn power points and stuff and the general concept are familiar.

Good ideas. After the suggestion to dump licensed characters (eg, Hulk) I have gone towards mutant and out-of-the-ordinary characters including mutant humans, ancient-old creatures and other extraterrestrial beings. My concept is there are five damage factors. Heat, cold, physics (ie, bullets, thrown objects), energy and radiation. Each character has powers that relate to the five different factors and each has a higher defense valve to each factor. Eg, an ancient rock monster is 25% immune to heat, 60% immune to cold, 90% immune to phyiscs, 40% immune to energy and 100% immune to radiation. But... This character, to balance his defense abilities, has slow speed, but high damage rating

Hmm, maybe. But if Pokemon cards are rated G then I think the characters I have basic sketches would probably be rated M or MA when they're made into models. Anyone, here wants to make one model so I can show off some of my designs? I have modeling software but I am a crap modeller.

This is exactly like DotA, you know. Add some item shops and weapon recipes and you're set.

Nobody's getting any custom powerups unless someone makes me some models! I will not upload my drawings, to save myself the humiliation
