So, every once in a while I'll download a map I don't really want to launch Half-Life to see, so I'll open it up in BSPViewer to check it out. And then, after a couple minutes of roaming around, I'll inevitably start to feel nauseous. This is especially noticeable when I have the viewport stretched out really wide (which it is by default, since I have a widescreen monitor), but it really could happen any time at all.

Now obviously, there's nothing anyone could do about this, I was just wondering if anybody else experienced this strange occurrence?

Nauseous nauseous, or nauseous disorientated?

But either way, that's weird. Seek medical advice immediately! :walter:

Is it fullbright? Or is it a different speed than you're used to? Is your screen refresh-rate too low? (>60hz does weird things to you) Do you need glasses?
Try looking at a far corner, getting up and moving around, distract your eyes form the screen.

Crafty can be really choppy because the mouse view is so fast, so that could be it. I get this too kind of when you have too many visible objects in hammer and/or vming too many objects: my 3d view becomes choppy and erratic.

The choppy movement could be it, if that's the case, ask you docotor for some dramamine, or maybe check for that brain disorder! I HOPE IT"S NOT A BRAIN DISORDER! = )

Nauseous nauseous. Like, queezy.

Why thank you for that uplifting idea.
Do you need glasses?
Already Got 'em. ;)

I personally think it's attributed to the weird way it renders 3D stuff... it's not the same as Half-Life at all. When you turn, it's like stuff "wraps around" the screen... don't know how to describe it any better. The field of view is different, I guess. I know they had to fix the field of view in Half-Life 2 to stop people from getting sick in the buggy.

I've heard of people getting this same thing from some FPS games, where they can't play them without getting sick. It's got to do with the bobbing motion when you walk. Hideo Kojima has this, which is why he designed all his Metal Gear Solid games with a top-down perspective.

I only know someone who gets motion sick when playing driving games too long.

Maybe you're just tired and are trying to concentrate for too long - that can make you feel sick.

Otherwise I would have gone with Tetsu0, refresh rate or something. Old CRTs make my eyes go weird and make me strain. What screen are you using, and is it set to native RR?

Otherwise, this sounds really weird, I can't see why it would only be this game. Also, you've been mapping for a while right? Has this just been happening recently?

Actually, I recently, erm, 'acquired' the first Turok game for the PC (after I 'acquired' it for the 'Nintendo 64'), but I couldn't finish it as I got incredibly nauseous after playing it for a few minutes. I tried the game a few times and I always had the same result. It's the first video game ever to have that effect on me, and I've been playing games since I was five or so.

It's not even just this game, it's this program specifically. Hammer doesn't really do this to me. And no, it's not a new thing. I'm using a flatscreen set at its native refresh rate... although LCD's don't even have "refresh rates", per say.

I think it might have something to do with the field of view. Turok has a rather strange one, being so old and all: perhaps it's the same with BSP viewer as well.

just make the window smaller, that'll reduce the FOV.

yeah.
I bet you're getting the same effect as a distorted FOV like penguinboy said.
Kinda like:

Try this... Cut a quarter out of a piece of paper and cover up your monitor with it. then play half life... The corner where the piece was but out will be VERY distorted when you walk around and stuff.

I was messing with the FOV command in Episode Two yesterday. The default value is 75. Changing it to 80 zoomed out, and made the world 'warp' around the center. A value of 60 zoomed in, and 'flattened' the world across the screen. I found it was easier on my eyes when I switched it to 70 instead of 75. An other neat thing I noticed is lowering the FOV value makes the whole world look bigger :crowbar:

Never tried the program, but
Is your screen refresh-rate too low?
seems most likely to me?

As Tetsu0 tried (and failed... > means greater than) to say low refresh rates can have weird effects on some people. Some find it unbearable. Check what refresh rate your desktop settings are at and/or what BSPViewer runs at. Max them both out.

This was the first thing that came to mind.

"Never tried the program, but"

For anyone who doesn't kno, Crafty Object Viewer (one of Nem's tools) is an outsanding quick way to look at maps. It's great for people's map who leave out a wad, you can still open the map and walk around, and the lighting still works. You can hold both mouse buttons for mouse view, and use the wsad keys to navigate around in 3D.

Did I mention it was great?! =)

I can get tired after playing games for over 4 hours but nothing hurt as much as Half-Life did. An hour in and my right eye was in PAAAAIN.
