I'm pretty sure it was 1997 - I remember the old Uplink demo back then...
I looked it up and it said that its forst public appearance was then at the Expo.

I did play the original Wolfenstein 3D when it came out.
And I remember playing the original Doom with my friends, with the computer hooked up to two big-ass stereo speakers.

I can't exactly remember when I first started playing HL, all I know is that HL was the first game I got in touch with and that I played it and its mods for many years. And still do... but that's mostly because I got troubles handling Source. 
Sadly the community isn't that alive anymore.
I miss those good days playing Vampire Slayer, Team Fortress Classic and Firearms. Those good ol' regular server knowing everyone always full and alive playing in clan kinda days!
