If im remaking a level, then am i allowed to use textures that show up in that level? (and not in any standard halflife .wads) Sure theyre custom, and i didnt make them, but the map will look nothing like the original without them.

ah.. I think its mainly because they are allowing the compo to be done with spirit and whatnot, it was never done, so I just assumed... so ok, you got me this time... :(

Now if I'm mapping for WonHL, what will I need to change in order for it to run on steam?

Nothing actually i'm pretty sure as long as you're WON Half life is 1.1.1.0 then it should work for people who put the mod inside they're half life folder inside the steam folder, then the name of the mod should come up on the user games list on steam.
Also what are the rules in the compo regarding a map that is based on a map from a game where that games map is based on a location in the real world

Thanks hunter! It works. Now i have to dig up all the random crap associated with splash screens and fonts and all that bologna (should be baloney). Well. Everyone knows what my re-make is; Kokiri forest from ocarina of time. I already have a bunch of easter eggs in there for you guys to exploit!

Im going to do the met museum from Rainbow six Rogue spear in gld. Src. That was like my favourite level from the game and since i've never gone to the met museum in New York then the entry is legal because im basing the entire design off whats in Rainbow six rogue spear. I've already finished making custom textures for the level so im going to start mapping during the weekend

Quick Q: Will judging be like voting for the MotM, more public than private? If not, is something like this be implemented later?

of course, the admins would have more weight than regulars, but it would be cool to have a viewers choice award instead of special mentions, or some odd combo of both.

i doubt you'll do it this way but it would be neat to include everyone.

i think that having set judges is more fair - the general public tend to vote for the users they like rather than the map. that's what motm is for.

Do reskins count as custom content? and if so therefore do reskins made by you count as your own custom content?

Also are we allowed to cross mods, say we put a cs: S model in hl2 map?

I'd like to remake the first level in Commander Keen 3: Invasion of the Vorticons (IotV).

Long time ago, i took screenshots of all the IotV episodes (3), and made textures out of them for GOldSource. An old test level with these texers can be found here: http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=671
I allready converted them to Source.

Can i use these to make the map with? Because making a Keen level in Source with only the default Source texers is just plain stupid.

I planned on retooling the original textures from the game I'm doing directly from screen captures (basically ripping them directly).

Is there a limit for this or is it frowned upon?

I must point out that you don't have to make the exact same map - i.e. you can change the texturing, you can change the models (anything to get out of making custom content, if you are unable) - as long as the map represents the map in the screenshots you provide.
Does that mean, that I can texture the map totally different from the actual map? Does that mean, I gotta map the areas I took screenshots of to the point exact architectural wise?
custom content is allowed, but only if you made it yourself. the same goes for custom code. just remember we will not be judging the custom content or code.
I fail to understand. I mean, you guys will be judging on texturing, which can be custom, right? Does that mean I can't use custom textures, if I haven't made them myself?

Not exact, but the shapes and shit should look like the map in the screenshot.

They will probably judge how you have used the textures, and not how the texture itself looks.

ah, screw it. use as much custom content as you want. the limitation was really only there because ant was using dialup, but now he can download the entries from uni.

and if freshed actually read the compo page he would know:
We will also be judging how well you 'refresh' the content: think about the Black Mesa modification for Source for an idea of what we mean.

I did, but thanks to my limited English I ended up getting confused.
Some things were completely speaking against each other... you know what I mean? Ah well, never mind. Thanks for the answers PB and Moocow.

I'm going to attempt to recreate and mix 2 UT maps, in a totally different vibe, yet still capturing the actual UT maps atmosphere. But heh, not promising to enter or even finish it. I'm taking my time.

Can we use the HL1 game recreating certain parts/maps, or will that give us less of a chance to win..? Because, its hard for me to make a map of another game, since I don't have any other games on my PC, don't have an other game systems either... You guys all know I could pull great stuff off... but when it comes down to judging, I don't want you guys being like, ah great another HL remake.. ...

it has to be in a different engine, meaning that you can make hl2 in gldsrc, and HL in source. you can't make HL1 in goldsrc.

i think they mean that you can use SOME (not much)(as little as possible) custom content (ie, textures, models) that is not your own but you can make your own custom content and use it as much as you want.
