As many of you are aware, i currently own weebitmagic.com and have a ridiculous ammount of (largely unused) bandwidth and filespace on it.

What I'm wondering is if it would be possible to mount a game server onto my web server which is hosted by IX hosting.

If so, how?
If not, how can i rig up my own server?

Probably not, that's why there are web hosting companies and game server hosting companies. Most web hosting servers restrict you from doing this sort of thing. I know mine did back when I was with Bluehost.

Rigging up your own server is a much easier prospect, but unless you have a really big-ass connection and a dedicated computer just for hosting the server, it's gonna lag like a sonovabitch.

If you're looking to host a GoldSource (or Source too, I guess) game, get the dedicated server update tool from the bottom right of this page and follow the setup instructions detailed on the Steam forums. That's what I did.

You can host a dedicated GoldSource server on a crappy computer and with a less than average internet connection, without lag.

Really? Because whenever I tried it and had a really high latency, there was a ton of lag.

TWHL HL(2)DM. I miss those days when i still had my server.
If you get HL(2)DM working on your webspace, im gonna be your best customer. ^^

Game hosting from a web host is just impossible, there's no way they'd let you do that. It's a web host, and very probably not dedicated.

Game hosting is more dependant on hardware (mainly CPU speed, IIRC) than on bandwidth (even though a decent connection is required).
For GoldSource, you can make do with really crappy hardware. I hosted a ~8-player Counter-Strike server with an old P2 running Ubuntu - pretty minor lag with my 1Mbit-upload connection.
