I just know that FF3 works well for me.

At least we can all agree it's better than Internet Explorer 7. I'm working on this new laptop with Vista at the moment, and I swear that ridiculous program is less stable and secure than IE6. Doesn't seem to have any popup blocking ability whatsoever, and it can hardly even handle tabs correctly.

Actualy, no. I'll have to disagree! I use IE7 on my Vista computer and I'm actualy happy with it's performance, I haven't found any obvious flaws or any real problems with it.

I know I belong to a minority here on TWHL, for actualy liking Vista but it sure is a lot better then XP. Sure, it needs a better computer to run like it should, but if you have a good computer, Vista is a good choice if you want to run Windows. All it's new features are pretty much copied from Mac OS and Linux, but that's a step in the right direction.

Firefox is better than IE7 in a few areas, but IE7 ain't bad.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-04 17:22:14 UTC Post #252112
The issue with IE (IE6 much more than IE7, but they are both afflicted) is its rendering problems, not their functionality as browsers. Speaking from a web designer point of view, IE is terrible. I mean... disastrous. IE disregards any forms of accepted standards, it's incredibly buggy and generally annoying as hell. Ask any modern web designer.
This is really the problem with IE: it destroys the web.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-04 17:47:51 UTC Post #252114
That I can understand. Basic knowledge in web design brings a whole new level to the ordinary browser. But speaking as a general user, there's no real problems. I guess it's like playing guitar, if you have a good guitar, everything sounds and plays awesome, if you have a crappy guitar you can still do the same stuff but it's much harder to play, but the people listening probably wont notice the difference.

Yeah, it was! :P

Hunter, most of the XP fanboys don't like Vista because they don't have it, or they can't afford it. It's only a handfull of them that actualy don't like Vista. And most of the comments doesn't even count, sence the person who made the comment doesn't use Vista and lack the knowledge to have a real oppinion.

I use them both at the moment. XP on my laptop, that's only because I don't care enough about it to upgrade. And on the big grey radiator in the shape of a fridge, I use Vista. And my honest opinion is that Vista is better, much better.

And on the on the topic:
IE6 (on the laptop) is not being used, it's no good. I use Firefox on the laptop.
On the Vista computer I use both, with no real difference in the performance between IE6 and Firefox.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-06 19:17:56 UTC Post #252162
you'll find that people don't have vista because they've tried it and know it's crap, not because "they can't afford it". what a stupid thing to say. personally i have tried vista and i have a legitimate copy of it, and from testing it, i personally have come to the following conclusions:

1. it's slow
2. it has driver incompatibilities and screws up a lot of older hardware
3. the openGL support is balls. many older games can't be played. (neither can hammer)
4. ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO OPEN THE CONTROL PANEL? ARE YOU REALLY REALLY SURE? REALLY? PLEASE CONFIRM YOU ARE NOT AN INTRUDER BY PRESSING YOUR FACE AGAINST THE SCREEN.
5. it's full of DRM

these are not the only reasons, but they are a few i can think of off the top of my head. if you want to know more reasons, look it up.

DirectX 10 is not a reason to use vista, before someone says it. dx10 is BS in it's entirety. the differences are minute and the performance cost is significant. and yes, i have tested DX10 as well.

It's no so much as "XP fanboy". the real reason for the XP support is because vista is so universally terrible. if you don't understand that then you are an idiot.

While there may not be any noticeable speed difference between Firefox and IE6, you fail to understand the problems that it has with rendering websites. IE fails to adhere to the W3C standards and is therefore ruining the internet. look on most modern websites and you'll see conditional comments with a specific stylesheet only for IE, because the fixes are needed to make IE behave like a proper browser.

Calm down, boy. There's no need to get angry.

As for your conclusions:

1. You have a slow computer.

2. Get new hardware.

3. That depends on how old the game is, games like HL and qauke are fully playable. I haven't tried Doom, Wolf and those yet, might not work.
So old games can be played but I'm not so sure about really old games.

4. That's an option. I take it that you didn't actualy use Vista if you didn't know how to turn that off. It still comes up when you're installing new software, though. Which can be a good thing, you don't get any intruder-ware that way.

5. So what?

And as for your IE6 vs Firefox rant, I don't really care about that, I use IE7 when I use IE.

Those of you that has tried FF3, is it worth upgrading?

I love FF3, personally. Just downloading it and trying it out is the only way to go, really.

It's because DRM is balls, and we all know it.

Tosse clearly doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

DRM is a scourge that completely goes against the term 'Personal Computer'.

New operating systems should NOT destroy the ability to play older games. They're supposed to GAIN compatibility, not lose it.

Also, calling Pb's computer slow and in need of new hardware is hilarious when he's running on a top end DX10 card and 4 gigs of ram.

Vista is epic fail, I'm sorry. I've used it enough to ensure I never touch it, ever.

Why do you think Microsoft is rushing forward with Windows 7 eh? Why do you think Windows XP support has been extended? Why do you think hardware manufacturers are offering XP preinstalled again after discontinuing it to support Vista? I wonder...

Vista has become the biggest joke in Microsoft's operating system history. Market adoption has been low, particularly in the business sector. The high system requirements are bollocks and the entire interface is far too 'hardcore' for the average user. Stuff has been blatantly ripped from OS X, and it hasn't been done well at all.

The thing that gets me is that the minimum system requirements for a lot of games actually goes up if you're using Vista. Wat?

Btw, Safari is a terrible browser. So is IE: all versions of it, in fact. The IE dev team have openly said that conforming to all W3C standards is not a priority, so I have to wonder what the hell they're doing with their time. The rendering engine blows in comparison to FF3 and Opera 9.2 and above: this is in terms of how well it renders the page, as well as how fast it renders it (which is not tied to connection speed).

As a personal rule of thumb, expect games on vista to take double the requirements on most things. Resource monster.

And, if it 'includes more security features', then that's even more of a turnoff. Windows security features are annoying enough as it is.

I can agree with both sides, Vista does have a lot of cons to it, but seeing as standards today mean you probably should already have twice the hardware to support Vista if you're even remotely interested in the future of gaming, whether on Vista or XP, then you should be fine.

I use Vista, I've had my troubles, but there is already a lot of support and even more people willing to work around it. For people who are bothered the most by the UAC (the annoying messages you get asking you if you REALLY want to open MSPaint), there is a lovely program out there called TweakUAC. It works wonders, I even forgot Vista had UAC after awhile.

As far as game compatibility, some flat out won't work, others you can try with compatibility mode, which is a feature most Windows OS's have had for a long time. Yes, I know it doesn't always work, but it's worth a try.

Really, do we have to bitch every other thread in the forums about Vista? It's not such a big deal, and XP will be unsupported eventually, and you can't really stop MS from doing it, so deal with it.

who's getting angry? i was just stating the facts, not screaming swears like a rampant fanboy.

rebuttals to your counterarguments (which really stink, they really just deny the facts)

1. You have a slow computer.
No. no, i don't. in fact, i can almost guarantee that it's much better than yours.

2. Get new hardware.
why should people ditch their perfectly functional hardware because of a new operating system? that should INCREASE compability, not decrease it.

3. old games can be played but I'm not so sure about really old games.
see above. "old games" and "really old games". great. hammer's 3d view might not be a game, but it's a perfect example of why some older games will break in vista.

4. I take it that you didn't actualy use Vista if you didn't know how to turn that off.
the fact that it's there in the first place is universally annoying. what about on computers with limited access? you can't turn it off then. even then the option is probably buried in some obscure place. it should be a toggable option when you install.

5. So what?
do you even know what DRM is?

I personally have to use Vista, because my new laptop - and laptop manufacturers in general, as I see it - doesn't support XP anymore. And I hate it. I have to buy another gig of ram for it to run good, to be useful, even if I don't use that fancy, fucking retarded aero-look. The constant questions are annoying as hell, and I didn't bother turning it off yet, because I can't find it easily - but something as shitty as this should be easy to turn off.

Man, I wish I could install good ol' XP on this thing.
