I just got Garrys Mod 10 and every time i start it, it gets to the load screen. Then when its at the point where its finished loading, it closes out. It did this with SMOD redux too. Is it a problem with vista or steam or my computer. And how can i fix it

I run all the Valve games on Vista with ease.

First off, do you get an error message? What does it say?
Are you video drivers up to date? Are your motherboard drives up to date too?
Is your computer clean of viruses and infections? Are you sure?

brand new computer, the rest of my valve games work (hl2, ep1 ep2 TF2 etc) and no theres no error message, it just closes out.

Update Windows and your video card drivers.

i HAD vista at one point, it was just a waste of money, my dad thought so too.

after a week vista was gone, it was too much, it's over protective, no games would run on it, and like i said, vista is more of a "looks better then runs better"

EDIT: try reinstalling gmod, once i couldn't run counter strike because it was missing a dll, and it did exactly what's happening to you, it just closed without a error.

I fail to see the point in vista-bashing. If it's not your prefrence then fine. Nobody is forcing it in your face (except DX10, multi-core processing and live.)

If Vista indeed is the problem you could downgrade to windows xp, you just need to hunt for your device drivers. (if you bought a premade computer, their website might have the xp drivers for you) The only remaining problem would be finding a copy of xp since they don't sell it any longer afaik.

And btw can i ask you if your hammer 3.x works ok in vista? (i'm buying a new computer soon and am wondering...)

I know lots of people with Vista that runs everything fine, including me.

If you cry about vista you've either: Never used it and are hopping on the bandwagon/used an illegal or very early copy/Have a shit computer/A massive geek who gets upset when he loses a few fps in games.

Honestly, I've used Windows since 95 and Vista is my favourite so far.

Also try posting your problem on steam forums, I've had to do that before and it's been fixed fine.

A.) Sorry we haven't figured out what's wrong yet, but Vista is not your problem. As I said, I play GMOD all the time.
B.) Try deleting your GMOD folder, the whole thing. It'll regenerate next time you start the game.
C.) In the main Steam folder, there is a file called ClientRegistry.blob, make sure Steam is closed and delete this file. It'll regenerate too. Doing this has solved nurmerous non-sensical steam problems.
