As far as I am concern, SnarkPit looks okay. It's XHTML source code looks pretty solid. It's not heavily cluttered with advertising like a lot of other mapping sites out there.

Tito, that was possibly the dumbest comment I've ever seen, because if you even looked at the source code you'd see 215 validation errors on the front page alone.

I don't get what Hunter is trying to say. Are you pointing out the blurry screenshots or what?

Alright Penguinboy, here's the deal: As a fellow webmaster, I do appreciate your attention to details when it comes to proper, tidy, strict-to-the-letter, web standards compliant website source code. Really, I do. Now, with that said, I do also know that website source code is not an absolute, exact science. It can be, but it does not have to be. Why kill yourself over something that's not going to matter much, if at all? As long as the source code is not too sloppy and it's errors fall within the specification's margin of error, the web browser will display the website the same way as it displays one with a "perfect", written source code. Those 215 validation errors you said you found, if they were to be corrected, will the website display or function any differently? So, to recap, this 100% error free validation mentality is overrated, that is, as long as it does not interfere with the browser's ability to display the website correctly. Oh, and it's not just me that says that, a lot of those expensive, web development books written by these experts or gurus in web standards, say the same thing also. Now remember, I don't have anything against perfect source code, is just that I rather be practical over being a perfectionist.

"Long paragraph is long"?....."looks balls"???

I am no English professor, far from it, but I think you need to work on your structuring of sentences. But I understand where you are coming from, it was a bit long, but sometimes one needs to make a point to an argument, long or not.

XHTML is an XML based language - and XML is an anally strict language. if an XML file has a single error, it is not parsed. this would be the same for XHTML if browsers actually parsed XHTML as XML, but they don't. point is that choosing a format like that and then filling it with errors is a dumb thing to do.

secondly, there's a standard for a reason. if you make a valid website that doesn't render like it should on a browser, then it should be the browser's fault. this means that you can sit on your valid website until the browser creators pull their thumbs out and fix their broken code.

yes, browsers detect invalid code and compensate for it, but they all do it in different ways. these ambiguities in parsing errors destroys any cross-compatibilities between browsers and makes web developers' lives a living hell.

people who don't follow the standards are slowing down the progress of the internet. imagine if a language like C++ didn't have a standard - multiplatform support would be out the window.

The reason that developing a website that is valid and works in all browsers is so hard is mostly because IE does not adhere to the standards like all other browsers do, and is therefore having a negative effect on the internet in general.

And I don't see a reason to correct someone saying that something "looks balls". It's a perfectly valid comment.

Q: Other mapping sites look shit, Why?

A: They didn't spend much time on the site/didn't have enough experience.

I only know of TWHL and Snarkpit, I think that I have an account on Snarkpit but the layout and design on the site is too darn ugly. I just couldn't stand it.

I WANT A PINK TWHL LAYOUT
Posted 16 years ago2008-08-21 07:11:32 UTC Post #254224
Well, for a start, TWHL's colors suck. This piss yellow is repulsive to all but the seasoned vets, which explains why I'm okay with it. Yeah, it's colorful and welcoming and warm. Warm like your toilet after you emptied your bladder into it.

Of course, in reality I hate all colors. None of them are unique enough for my taste, and they all have bad or annoying stereotypes associated with them. Blue is generic and unoriginal, red is too bright and warm, black is associated with darkness and emos, white is nauseatingly trendy. Shit, why does life have to be so hard?

Oh, wait, we were supposed to complain about other sites. Let's see, ModDB is almost too easy. It fell victim to the cancer that is WEB TWO POINT OH, and essentially became a useless and slow interactive flash site.

Regarding XHTML, using it unless you intend to send it as its proper form (eg. application/xhtml+xml) is pointless and will make the browser parse it as HTML. Of course, IE can't even parse application/xhtml+xml at all. Conclusion: don't use XHTML (yet). Kind of off-topic, I just felt the need to inform.

On web-standards and validity I agree completely with PB. Tito has a point about exaggerated validity-obsession, but in web design, standards often help make the site more compatible - in all browsers but IE. The common process is to develop a site using strict web standards and then fix it for IE.
Most importantly of all is accessibility - the web standards recommend and somewhat enforce the site to be accessible by disabled users (using screen readers etc.), something all web developers should strive for.

I agree for the better part of ZombieLoffe's take on things. Note on Internet Explorer: The new IE version 8 is schedule to come out soon, or at least that's what I read a while back. Rumor has it that Microsoft is re-building the browser's parsing engine from the ground up, making it more universally compatible to not just the current standards, but the new emerging ones like HTML 5, which by the way, it's final specification draft has been already completed. I only heard this from a few of those I.T. industry blogs that I occasionally read, have not heard any thing official yet from Microsoft.

IE version 8 is schedule to come out soon
A very vague "soon". The IE8 release is still probably aeons away. And even when it's released, it will be aeons still until people have moved over to IE8. The majority of web users are still using IE6.

Still, it's nice that MS is choosing to actually follow web standards for once - "Standards mode", as it has been named, will be the default setting for IE8.

You know what, I think MuzzleFlash is on to something in regards to Snarkpit. For an example: I just tried to register myself on Snarkpit, and whenever I come to the part about entering the security code on the last text box, I get a "Did not match". So I try again, and again, and again and again and a few more times, and still I get a "Did not match"! What the hell!

There is no way I could have possibly gotten wrong the letters and numbers on that stupid security code picture about 15 times strait! There has to be something really wrong with their register form. And to make matters worst, I can't seem to find a way to contact their admin, who ever he is. Can somebody verify if there is something wrong with their form, unless it's just me, which I seriously doubt!

WHY ARE THEY KILLING THE INTERNET!?!?!
It's not hard at all to make a website that validates. Whenever you run in to an error or a warning and you don't know how to fix it - Google it and 30 seconds later you'll know what you did wrong.

And wtf is border doing there?
He should do a Wikipedia (he probably deosn't know about Google) search for CSS.

No. Waste of time and talent. There are far more important things on TWHL's horizon, such as the projects panel. Themes were planned at one stage, but it's an idea currently floating around in limbo because there are far more important things to worry about.
Speaking of internet speeds , I heard that some admins here are having trouble with these speeds . Are you thinking what I'm thinking ? Good !

Widgets? Show me a new widget that is both useful and suitable for TWHL's purpose, if you can.

The polls comment is too trivial to even argue with.

Fair enough that some people don't like the colours, people have different tastes, but everything else you're complaining about is just absurd. TWHL3 is a site developed (or actually still in development) for functionality and cleanliness, not messy, in-your-face unnecessaries.
