In the video game world, either it be PC gaming or game consoles, there always comes that special moment where everything changes, and in this case, it comes from the world's 2nd largest chip maker, AMD. After reading and seeing with my own eyes on where the next generation gaming is headed with AMD's new graphics engine, called "Cinema 2.0" I believe this is the future that all gamers are clamoring for.

Just to give you a little taste of the power of Cinema 2.0 can do, check the following picture out, it is not a photograph of a real person, it is pure CGI, powered by Cinema 2.0, in REAL TIME, mind you, not pre-rendered!:

I don't want games too look that good. It would be too hard to map.

I just shit, pissed and came in my pants all at the same time.

However regarding potatis' comment, I concur. This would not be a useful upgrade for modders with low budgets.

It's cool, but I don't want my games looking THAT realistic.

Nothing unrealistic would look good anymore, for example monsters or teleport effects.
That's my theory, but I could be wrong.

Photo-realistic graphics is not a big deal at the end of the day. Nor is it neccesary.

Lets face it, if you were to gun down masses of photo-realistic, and physically simulated people in a videogame...well...that shit will mess with your head.

I supposed if some time in the near future, Half Life 3 were to be released supporting Cinema 2.0, two bad things would happen: First, your PC rig would most likely will have to be an expensive machine equipped to the max with the latest of everything, which could cost somewhere between $2,500 and $3,500 or more, just to play the game with all effects turned on. Second, for all the map makers out there, a whole new map editor would have to be invented, supporting Cinema 2.0. Yep, this sure sounds like the future to me. But I do agree with most of you that's against this, the PC gaming world might not be ready for this just yet.

Alright noob, here it is: In a nut shell, Cinema 2.0 is just simply a graphics chip similar to ones found on game consoles, but in this case, Cinema 2.0 is far, far more powerful and advance than anything else in the market. It is made by AMD, which normally only do PC processors, like for example the Athlon 64. This Cinema 2.0 chip will be used to power the newest PC graphics cards (ATI Radeon HD 4800 series), and perhaps maybe game consoles in the future (Xbox720 or PS4?).

Fascinating.

Maybe the future is already here.

I'll make sure that my son will play the original Doom and Quake to understand that gaming has come a long way.

The original Doom was the first game i had played. My dad showed me how to load it in DOS when i was 2 years old. Thats what got me hooked on games, and the computer in general, and got me to where i am today.

Pretty neat.

I can't wait for them to digitize Gordon Freeman.

Damn!.....That's some freaky shit, it's just mind boggling where the state of the art in graphics technology is at right now! So is not just CGI getting incredible, but also motion capture, which is pretty mandatory to have in today's video game industry. I wonder........Will Square Enix be able to make their next Final Fantasy CGI movie look like this? I'm sure the folks at Pixar are contemplating this technology also.

Facinating, to say the least.
I just wonder what kind of processing power it takes to render something like that.

I'd like to see it used in movies, but no so much in games.

Why bother in movies? If the CGI's that good, you may as well hire actors.

Because with CGI you can create people who look exactly how you want instead of finding people who fit the bill and dressing them up.
You have total control.

Exactly. The one movie that I can think of that got the closest to achievivg this, was last year's "Beowulf":

If any of you here have not seen this movie yet, and want to get a lesson on cutting edge graphics, I highly recomend you see it. (Yes, that is CGI you are looking at)

I strongly agree.
It's hard to me to get used to the new ( for me it's new but I know even the source engine is old now ) Source engine . I like half-life 1 graphics and I just get exalted when I know there's a powerful active hl1 mod community ( that's Sven Coop ! )

You know , everyone can have the will to play something like that , but not everyone has the power and the money ...
Maybe someday these companies will realise that making a game ultra-realistic isn't the principal goal ..... How ? Who the fuck will have money for crossfire\SLI , huge case , huge cooling sistem , huge hdd and huge bills ?
Yes , that's not the path for a green computer . These experiments should remain experiments and should not be produced into some game\application and then be selled ....

I would really like if more people would map for hl1 ...... I don't know why , but it sounds fun :) . 10 years for this engine , and maybe 20 more , just for nostalgia !

[EDIT] Yay I have an Ati Radeon Hd 4850 !!! But I promise that if a game with this kind of graphics appear , I won't buy it .

Nice, it'll most likely make gamews come out faster since the process saves time.

Still it makes me worried someday programs will replace us and all it'll take is the click of a button to make a game :D

And then humans will go extinct except for a half dozen, who's sole purpose in life it to breed every now and then and test video games and see if their graphics are as awesome as the robots think they are.

Those men will be gods.
