This is the same thing I got bumped for on FP (okay I'll drop it LOL)

I want to create models for HL2 based stuff...... specifically gmod.

I dont have money right now, so I have to rely on free (or at least 30-day trial) software, although 30-day trials usually either disable saving or have some lil watermark on everything.

What would work really well?

And sorry to combine posts, but also, if I can ask where can I find a batch compiler? They seem to work better on my slower system

The Valve XSI Mod tool that comes with the SDK would be a good place to start. See if that is easy enough to use.

Is the XSI Mod Tool still available? I thought they stopped distributing keys once Autodesk bought Softimage out.

I think they started distributing it again, but since I don't have steam ATM I can't check.

You need Steam to use it? Don't you just fill in this form?

According to that, you should try and get version 6 so that the Valve export tool works correctly.

try using sketchup? it's free and REALLY simple, even an idiot like myself managed to get the hang of it and make some reasonable props.

model making is something u have to master through many years.. if u r interested in check out these beasts: Blender 3D(free) or 3D Studio Max, both come with plugins, export, import model to source engine etc...

i forgot to mention, if u just want to create models use Milkshape 3D

I'm looking to create "props" like Trapt called them. For those who havent played GMOD each object is called a prop. I want to create props which can be used for several things..... bowling pins and stuff like that, various building block types and sizes (yes I know they have Phoenix, but there are things I want to use which arent created as being LOW LAG)

I will check out all the suggestions I've seen so far. Blender seems to be mentioned in many places.

Ninja, mastering isnt exactly my ultimate goal. I just want to know the basics and play arund from there. Being home a lot makes me bored and restless, so I try to challenge myself to something new whenever possible (watch for my gen discussion thread here in a few)

We all know what props are. I don't even map for source and I know how to use a prop_physics XD
Gmod also spawns prop_ragdolls, not just prop_physics. ;)
I wish you luck, hopefully you'll be better at modeling than I am.
