How can they be "finished and ready for compile" when they don't compile properly!?

Rofl.

No offence, but seriously, i know your type of maps: a clusterfuck of randomly placed platforms with random ugly textures scattered all over and complex world geometry made with just plain solids. That's probably why VIS can't run.

Pretty much like this:

Seriously. What. A. Mess.

Can you post a screenshot or two of the maps, so we know what we're talking about?

Exactly what i expected: a clusterfuck.
Count me out, im not doing it.

One thing though: i want you to know that im not calling you a bad mapper, it's just your unusual architectural brushwork and choice of textures, it's just weird.

I'm at a loss at how you even come up with these maps.

Haha, oh wow. Psilous is no doubt really high on something when he maps. :-D

lol i know, and psilous: editing someone else's work is about the most unfun thing you would want to do, as everyone has there own way of organizing/building things. Especially YOUR crazy style!

They're trippy, and if they worked, I'd probably enjoy them...in a weird acid-trip kind of way.

I could try to fix one of them, but I won't promise results. What VIS errors are you getting?

@potatis - for the errors.. nothing major, it's just I'm at a loss to finding them.. :( I'm assuming

on the PSILOS_RAVING map:
  • Exactly 7 "Leaf portal saw into Face" (I have them written down in a .txt.. ..I'm not exactly certain why I didn't just end up fixing it myself.. maybe i was high mapping @_@)
on the PSILOS_LESBIA map:
  • It lists 7 "Leaf portal saw into Leaf" then at the bottom right before the 'crash line' it reads..
  • Error: Vismap expansion overflow
:(
I'm at a loss at how you even come up with these maps.
Most of the time.. I'll just see/hear something in my actual life experiences that inspires a portion of a map, then I kind of just wrap a map around it (like the raving map.. I made the entire thing because I wanted to hear that benny benassi remix in a map)

Or the lesbia map.. actually started.. I was making a gazebo prefab.. and I wanted to see what it would look like on a quickly crafted up hill.. then I just got carried away with it, ending up with that so called 'clusterfuck'
@ATDestroy, Thnx AT!! I appreciate the gratitude! ..(for some reason I have problems at direct hosting sites that allow me to upload maps to twhl, so i have to use megaupload)

HOWEVER, If your interested in my mapping style, I host all my finished maps in a myspace blog (and some models and other little tidbits, i.e. halflife.wad) see them at: www.myspace.com/kingpsilocybe

clusterfuck made my day xD

But these 2 errors already sound like a lot of work.

I have been compiling "raving" for two hours now and haven't encountered any errors...

HAWT! i'm wants to saw this!

It's still compiling... I'm running normal VIS.
Edit: Ok I just stopped hlvis. It felt like it was never going to finish. 9 hours is extreme.

Then there really is something wrong.

Go func_wall happy for a while. Turn anything that might split world faces into an entity as well as any semi-complex geometry and you'll at least have a working normal vis compile.

Work backwards from there by moving necessary func_walls back into world brushes (brushes that need to make shadows, that need to block vis, etc).

Also, don't use too many individual brushes in a single func_wall. That can cause vis problems. I'm not sure if there is an exact number, but I've found that it's safe to use less than 14.
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-04 03:12:44 UTC Post #277280
But func_walls do project shadows...
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-04 03:29:25 UTC Post #277281
No they don't.
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-04 09:29:06 UTC Post #277290
also.. in that raving map.. right above the dance floor is a custom light that is triggered when the music/everything crazy happens... thats.. FAIRLY semi illegal..

You can go ahead and change it to something mour surface friendly, if vis is giving that much of a problem
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-04 16:15:47 UTC Post #277304
I was always convinced they did. I suppose I'll have to test then.

And psilous, what do you mean with "FAIRLY semi illegal"??
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-04 16:34:22 UTC Post #277307
They don't, Stu, but you can force shadows by setting the zhlt lightflags property. This increases compile time though.
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-04 18:47:56 UTC Post #277319
like.. in a boxed room the light would be perfectly legit.. but near that architecture and the other toggeled light.. is garenteed illegal to the engiene

doh.. you sound like your giving up

what went wrong? wouldn't compile lights huh?

i think that raving error is just the custom light over the dance floor..

i dont know why lesbia doesnt run :(
Posted 14 years ago2010-01-05 21:15:40 UTC Post #277381
Yep, I'm giving up. I never tried compiling lesbia. An advice: compile and test your map often. Then it's much easier to locate problems.

i swore i had been.. :(

i was on the pent 2 when making those maps though.. so making them in larger chunks was actually less time consuming as compared to compiling for hours on end
