Stop using/trying to use purple.

I use it to know who I've counted so you don't get two votes (or no votes).

What do you mean, find the code? Use Some text[/purple] for purple text. You probably shouldn't use it in this thread though.

Edit:
Like TJB wrote,"map an alien abduction" has two different numbers.
13) Make a map where you are abducted by aliens
20) Map an alien abduction

Isn't a dream and a nightmare Technically the same thing? Just my opinion, what does everyone else think?
Posted 14 years ago2010-06-11 18:43:38 UTC Post #281755
A nightmare is a dream, but a dream isn't a nightmare.

Nightmares are generally understood to be scary or at least highly unlikable by whoever's having one. Its a 'classification' of dream.

If map a dream passes, you'll get to map a nightmare too if you want.

I have a concern with 'map a dream' though. What criteria are we supposed to judge on? Dreams encompass so much stuff that it might as well be a "map whatever you want" competition. It'll come down to what me/other judges think should win based strictly on opinion. :/

Chea good point... judging will be highly subjective with no solid guidelines... Maybe you could try to quantify dreamy-ness on how surreal or strange it is, tho that obviously doesn't cover every type of dream..

Just build a xen map and your map qualifies for Map-A-Dream...

I don't think it does. Most dreams make little sense and have things disappearing and appearing.

Just judge on creativeness. It can be random and weird but most dreams make "some" sense and pertain "somewhat" to your real life and whats going on. Im not saying mine isn't going to be extremely weird but if it wins my dream will be both weird and somewhat symbolic and realistic in ways. Not all dreams are all good or all bad. It could be some good and some bad.

Just making a xen map or anything might qualify but I don't think it would win. Unless you made it seem like a dream somehow.
Posted 14 years ago2010-06-11 20:25:27 UTC Post #281759
pertain "somewhat" to your real life and whats going on.
But a dream doesn't have to pertain to your real life.

I still think "map something surreal" would be more appropriate :|
I mean, that seems to be what everyone is thinking, yeah?

Map a dream is too open and too undefined. Even I have a really hard time thinking of something to do for it.

Just think about cool stuff that you can map your self experiencing as if it were a dream. And map it. Surreal is idealy what it is but just make it a dream. Haven't you ever flew in a dream? How about went to cool neat places. Just make it a strange but cool adventure or even a scary one.

If you think about it all a dream is is thoughts. So really anything you can think of could be a dream. Just map cool places you can imagine being and it would make an awesome dream if you ask me.

Map a dream!
Posted 14 years ago2010-06-13 03:57:11 UTC Post #281781
I usually have random dreams like, first im in one place doing one thing and then suddenly im dreaming about something completely different and it doesn't add up. Thats what I would probably do for map a dream. Something confusing, surreal etc. Plus you can do it for hl with teleports and func_wall_toggle etc.

Not to forget killtarget, env_render and trains. Map a dream will be an exciting competition, I predict.

Edit: I hope we'll be allowed to make our entries in mod format. It's no big deal, I just prefer to work that way.

I don't think it would be cheating. 30 days is enough time for everyone to finish their entry, If you start three days earlier and finish three days earlier, no harm mode?

Well if we go by the vote from this thread map a dream wins for sure. If something else won atleast i'd have been being creative and thoughtful. So what are your ideas on "science" anyway. That is one I have no idea what I would make. Science just makes me think of beakers and glass tubes and electricity.
Posted 14 years ago2010-06-14 13:25:01 UTC Post #281814
i dont think map a dream is doable. It leave it too open. it is basically map whatever you want.
How about: Map a music video?
Just get any song you want, and make a music video for it - camera work, scripting - whatever you want.

Doesn't work
@Zeeba
Science is everywhere. Question anything, get some results(knowledge) and you have science. You can get ridiculous this way though, like for example, explaining how a ball pen can write on paper.

Here's an ideea: map an electric generator map(being a science themed map it has to be dynamic to show how different components work).
Or, map the a car engine(although this could be difficult).
Map a chemical reaction(that's something I'm after if science wins).
Map the journey of a Voyager 2 and the sadness of loosing contact with Earth by 2025.
Map a detailed bomb explosion. Showcasing in a scientific way how an explosion happens.
Map a Supernova.
Map the digestion of food :D.
Map something related to the LHC.

The list goes on, it's just about imagination, and it doesn't have to be extremely scientific. It's just about making it look like science.

I thought of an "upside down" theme but meh.

I still like the science theme, I think it'll be most successful all around, but the vote isn't leaning towards it.

@ Grim, sorry i did not have those ideas a week ago. :(
I felt that map a dream had a strong following, but it's impossible to implement properly due to the generic nature of dreams.
Since the following dropped off, i figured I'll just open a reply for a few hours and type any new idea that came to me - (or my girlfriend, she helped)

I think its a little late because most people have already voted. Yet another one fallen to the doubt of making a dream! Cmmon it won't be that hard. Im surprised the competition hasn't started yet, i'm sure everyone's already planning and stuff.
Posted 14 years ago2010-06-15 12:37:40 UTC Post #281833
it's not quite hard to map a dream, I meen sure you can't make it nearly as surreal as an usual dream, But you can try and you have a large entity selection to choose from. Plus Perhaps the judges can judge it from its surreal ness and dream like ness rather than architecture. You don't get many entity based comps these days.
