Sorry for the month old bump, but I'd really like to see the competition go through.

My holidays start in around three weeks. I'm actually kinda hoping that it's held off until then.
- map abandoned hospital
 • map cyberpunk city
 • map postnuclear city
Far too specific.
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-08 21:20:34 UTC Post #286919
Hell no. I think those are great. Now, "map a trashed apartment building with no working lights or water in a post-apocalyptic setting" would be too specific.

I like abandoned hospital, leaves plenty of barriers to make it a contest, but plenty of room for creativity to flow.
I also like the idea of a post-apocalyptic/post-nuclear city or so.
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-08 23:01:49 UTC Post #286920
there are alot of abandoned hospitals already done, namely the top 2 horror mods for HL1.

I looked at previous compos and saw that some contests revolved around a specific func_entity (like water or glass). So how about a theme in that fashion?

I call func_pendulums.

Map from base so we can all do something to some extent even if its lazy.

The problem with them is that it's just "map this environment better than everyone else". It's boring; it doesn't reward true creativity.
Who the hell wants to take part in a competition where they know that every other contestant is building exactly the same thing? This is one of the reasons why the last competition was "map a dream" and not "map a nightmare".

Edit: I guess I should ask: why do you feel something like "map an abandoned hospital" is a good idea? What are all the pros you see in it?
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-09 08:06:28 UTC Post #286927
Does anybody still want a 'Map from Base' competition, or should we be looking at a theme now?

We (us Moderators) really should have sorted this a while ago. I'm going back through the thread and throwing a poll up for the most popular ideas.

EDIT:
Okay, done. Let me clarify the choices...

From base (solitary area) - Basically, it'll be a small area, something like room -> corridor -> room, with the goal to be pure ambience, make it dripping with it!

From base (full deathmatch map) - Same sort of thing, but a full deathmatch. Ambience won't matter so much as just having a nice theme and pulling it off.

Destructification-type (from base) - Possibly using a deathmatch layout, but your goal is, well, obvious. Points for creative methods of destruction (Time? Weather? Cthulhu? Your choice!)

Map something historical - A point in time, duh! Can be an important historical event, or just a nice representation of the past.

Destructification-style gets my vote, with solitary area in second if that even matters.
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-10 04:16:58 UTC Post #286941
I really don't like any of those ideas especially the hsitorical one but if I were to choose from them I would pick "deathmatch from base". The first ones cool but I don't feel like making a useless map. And I really don't want to remake a historical place. Unless it was historical architecture. I guess my vote goes to dm from base.

At first I thought abandoned hospital was stupid but I actually like it. I see an old town with hay growing and blowing in the wind. A big glass lobby with doors swinging open in the wind and old hospital material here and there. Out of date computers. Warm beams of sun revealing dust. I vote map an abandoned hospital if it could be an option!

I don't care what the competition is lets make this happen already. Geez i'm going to be soooo busy if I enter. Which I always do...
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-10 04:52:35 UTC Post #286942
I don't see how you guys can find appealing the thought of rerunning competitions from the past. Destructification was already done, can't you find something new?
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-10 05:07:46 UTC Post #286943
Yea I agree, and dm from base twice. How about we have everyone submit "just ONE" of their favorite ideas starting now. And than we vote on them. And type it in green so it stands out. I will think of one tomorrow and post it tomorrow night.

Also, I hate all of the new ideas that have been presented so far, and I'm not clever enough to offer any of my own. I wanted to say map a movie, but OH WAIT. >:C

Edit: Seeing competitions like Scipted! and Laser Fun make me sort of want some kind of emphasis on entities instead of fancy brushwork. Destructification fits the bill, along with a million other possible things.
Also, what was up with Transport Hub? Why did that fail?
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-10 06:13:36 UTC Post #286945
@Soup: I think the transport hub compo was the first source-only competition, and because this is TWHL, nobody entered because their computers couldn't run anything newer than something from 1998.

So are we going to each submit an idea or just go with the same old ones? I agree that I don't like any proposed thus far. And I think brush work is a better focus being that source outways gold hugely in entities. Either way you can always add them to make your levels better. So should we each submit one idea and do it that way?

Soup your more than clever enough to come up with a good idea. Or, well destructification from base could be "your idea/ vote"...

Edit: gah lee iv'e been gone all day and no responses. Well I think this competition should be a fresh new idea as well. Unless yall want to do it the way Strider proposed/ said. I feel I should have a little say being that I won last one. My idea is... uhh/??

If different engines are the problem, is there any reason why there can't be two categories for the same competition? Though I suppose Map From Base might be tricky to work around...

I think the more vague the theme the more creative it allows you to be.
Eh. The less restrictive perhaps. But it doesn't encourage finding clever and intuitive ways to express things, imo.

A map from base thing sounds fine as long as the base actually leaves something to work with. Being too simplictic can lead to this problem just as being too detailed can.

This competition thread is moving slower than a salty slug. Its ok though because I have eight class days left of this semester and tons of homework.

just occurred to me: the word "historical" is extremely broad of a word, does it mean history as in Game history, or Textbook History, or what?

People gotta get creative.

Then I could map a desert and call it 30,000 B.C. and amaze everyone.

Or, just not map anything and call it "pre-big-bang" and win the compo.

I want to make a map of the Iranian Embassy Siege for cs, but unfortunately I do not have enough resources to do this, I mean I would need a proper layout of the building, I watched a documentary of the SAS engagements some time ago and I saw a good portion of the building there, but still It would be very hard. So yeah, I just threw this idea out here, If anyone of you wants to take up the challenge, you're free to take this idea!

Actually, after reading this thread, can my poll vote be changed to map something historical? When I voted all I could think of were the pyramids and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which I didn't feel like mapping.

This thread isn't going anywhere whatsoever! And i'm not going to enter a competition that is completely un interesting. How about there just be no more competition threads and just make a competition because im sick of all this useless anticipation. Just come up with an interesting idea and start a competition out of it. Or get this thread organized!
Posted 14 years ago2010-11-20 16:54:26 UTC Post #287147
Seconded.

More compos and less debate. You don't like the compo, you don't enter it. But it's all good because there will be another one next month.

(Ok, I support a short discussion, but this is going nowhere, hence I second Zeeba.)
