I am aware that RTS is a rather out of place subject on these forums, but I'm trying my luck with some of the members I know they enjoy this genre.

I am struggling to remember an RTS that I've played over 7 years ago. A friend of mine used to have a CD that I borrowed with this RTS, and it was just wonderful. Unfortunately that CD got destroyed before I could archive the game on my computer.

I think it's a pre-2000 RTS, judging after the 2D graphics. Problem is... I really forgot even how it looks, anything that I try to remember is replaced with KKND2 images.

The game has quite "modern 2D" graphics, I'd say better than the KKND2 ones, comparable to the starcraft ones I think( but I might be wrong, having only "ghost" images left of it).
I've googled, I checked this site, even checked a wikipedia chronological list of RTS games and couldn't find it!

It is possible that it just plain doesn't exist on the internet, or is so "rare" that nobody mentions it. Just like another RTS game that I have problems replaying, 7 years war(inspired by some korean war in the 15-16 century). 7 years war doesn't work anymore on windows 7.

This game I am looking after has a bit of a C&C:Red Alert and KKND2 gaming style. I think there are a lot of factions, lots of colors and some basic resource gathering (like probably 1 ore 2 type of resources). It's either a "sci-fi" or a "near-future" type of RTS.

So, I am excluding these out of your suggestions:

Dune 2, Dune 2000, KKND2, Starcraft(duh), C&C games, Total Annihilation.
[EDIT] Another clue: I think the first letter of the title belongs to the last letter of the alphabet. Something like "t" or "s". I am saying this because I remember I had to scroll down a few files on that CD. This could be just my imagination though.

I really appreciate any suggestion, even if not correct. I so miss playing that game :|.

It's not Z and...
Muzz, you didn't even take the time to read through my post.
I said 2D, sci-fi\modern. The other 3 don't fit to my description.

Thank you for the suggestions, I am just trying not to transform this thread into a mess.

My friend had a star-wars RTS, it was like a cross between C&C and age of empires.

I can't really remember, only played it once, but this might be what I was thinking of:

It's nothing about starwars :(.

I'm guessing it's one of those bandwagon RTS games, but I just know I enjoyed it to the max.

ANY kind of visuals that you remember would be a great help here. What did the ground look like? Did it have varying levels of terrain height? What color were the resources? On what side of the screen was the build/unit menu?

With the vague description we have, it could be anything.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-02 08:27:41 UTC Post #290998
It was so good I can't even remember anything significant about it!

I can tell you that it might not be on the wikipedia list because I've checked them all.
It had water, I think only one type of resource, varying levels of terrain, fog of war but I think it could be removed if you built some radar-building...lots of different units...can't remember more :|.
Isn't there somewhere an official list of all released games? Because the wikipedia one is surely not complete.

Yeah, well... :quizzical:

agrees with soup you're giving us almost no useful informations... maybe draw us some concept pics of what the units/harvesters/buildings looked like? (ghost images or not)

if u didn't dream it, information does exist on the interweb I guarantee it... perhaps its a mod of kknd 2?

It's not a mod of kknd2. The internet has disappointed me before, don't guarantee me that.

I also mention that it resembles somewhat with supreme commander( of course, not being 3D and all... but the style ...)

Seriously striker , get your ass on MSpaint or whatever image editing program , and make a crappy sketch just showing us what things might've looked like , main menu , loading screen , etc etc.
A picture speaks a thousand words.

Well, it's not much to go on, but it seems like you remember some things that could help you. The shape and design of those vehicles seems specific enough, and the resources seem to be gathered from a single unit instead of a field of resources.

Why do those tree-like-things on the right have tentacles? What are those things that look like radioactive waste at the top of the screen?

I doubt you'd be able to get an answer from TWHL to be honest, but you might be able to ask these same questions on some big RTS board.

To be honest, it sounds a little bit like Tiberian Sun, but that could also just be because I'm playing it right now. I never played many RTS games, but it at least fits the criteria.

I know you've ruled out C&C games. I'm just saying...

I finally found the game. Instant Mix was right.

It is Dark Reign(see, I forgot about the "dark" part and said it is a letter from the last ones in the alphabet).

I don't have time right now, but I can't wait to download(I think it's abandonware by now) and replay it. Ah, the memories!

I used to play Dark Reign 2 back in the day. Fans of the original all thought the sequel sucked, but it was (probably) my first 3D RTS game and I loved it.

It's happened to me before that I remembered playing a game from a time before time, and turning the internet upside down yielded nothing. Then YEARS later, looking for something else, casually finding it on an abandonware site I had already searched. There still are some things that the internet hasn't caught up on.

Along with my very first computer, acquired in 1998/9, came some cd with over a hundred shareware/demo games. Most of them were crap but some of them were pretty good. One such demo was Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny, which I remembered from nearly a decade earlier at my uncle's computer. Only then I could link the game to a name. It took me 4 years to get my hands on a full version.

Then there was a short demo of a Doom RPG mod, named Strife. Interesting to say the least. I searched every dusty corner of the internet, and as late as 2006 there was no mention of it anywhere. Then I casually found it in an abandonware site in 2008.

Same with some flight simulator by Sierra, named Silent Thunder. As of 2008-9 (last time I looked) there was no mention of it anywhere on the internet.

One funny concept I found on a particular game was "PBEM: Play By E-Mail". You didn't need to play online to play with a friend - you emailed them the save file.

I think I still have that disc kicking around.

Ok, now that I remembered Dark Reign, I compiled a list of RTS games I played and liked and provided some links where to get them(they're mostly abandonware of free nowadays).

Here's the article on my blog.
Enjoy :D.

I would'nt say "bad", at least it has full motion video's which was quite a thing for the time being, especially for a game that was originally designed to run under DOS. I guess that if you grew up with these RTS games, you really don't care about the graphics but more about its gameplay and nostalgic value.

there must have been a unit cap for the original game then, right? an old comp must of went ape-shit when you massed units?! =)

I've never encountered a unitcap in any of the classic C&C games (TD and RA), but i did in Dune 2.

My Tiberian Dawn crashes, for whatever reason, when any of my units goes in the top 3 or 4 squares of the map. I kinda need that tiberium for the GDI mission I'm up to, so there's not a whole lot I can do. Haven't found a working fix yet.

Can't remember if I ever finished Allies on Red Alert.
