Who's ready for the next competition?

I think it would be cool if we could have a "Map a Celebration" where you get to map an entire party for the new TWHL website address.

Doh.

There are also mini compo's if you can't wait for the official one. I've been thinking about reviving it as it's been a while since we had one of those. If one of you guys want to do it, go ahead.

Are you just adding unnecessary complications [depth] to make things complicated so that people will think your map doesn't suck?

From now on, every person who replies after me will get a random single player map idea. The ideas will be given in a logical progression. There are about thirteen ideas, and at the end the thirteen maps will be combined into yet another nameless mappack. The ideas will ask you to do something in particular, but outside of that you can do whatever you want. Let's see if this works out.

Abstract: map the journey of data packet("personalize" its story, what it carries is not important, actually a mistery) across the internet between 2 end points.

How about we have an entity based challenge rather than the common brush based challenge for once?
Skals SkalsLevel Designer
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-20 09:01:12 UTC Post #292006
The only reason it's "commonly" brushed based is because that's what most people make of it. A placing map should excel in all areas: entities, ambiance, brushwork, lighting and texturing. Judges do keep that in mind when judging, but mostly people just concentrate on brushwork and texturing which limits what they can actually judge.

Umm, this thread was made before.
This was the result:
make a map using nothing other than textures from a custom WAD (to be provided)
mapping to one pre-defined .wad is actually a really good idea. That could present some very interesting takes on a theme.
I like that idea.
I'd like to hype-up the idea about mapping from a single wad as well.
This is fucking brilliant.
Wow thats a great idea guys! Nice one Urby.
I like the "map from a WAD" idea. It would have to be the right size, and pretty diverse. Maybe someone could make a custom one specifically for a compo.
Map from wad.

//Raises hand.
Map from a wad sounds awesome.
a rule like you must use every texture at least once might add to the challenge.
Every now and then a good and (relatively) original idea like "map from wad" comes along.

/vote
To sum up:
A material pack (which will be converted to a goldsource .wad as well) which contains a relatively small, yet reasonably varied number of textures. The map must use each texture at least once, but can not use any textures not included in the pack except tool textures (that's ZHLT.wad, Goldsourcers).
