Looks cool urby. Reminds me of the purple cinematic effect on warcraft 3!

Tis this a snow globe?

Awesome! the shack isn't snowy though.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-04 07:44:37 UTC Post #292964
I'm sure he would of at least tried making it snowy if he had enough brushes to do that.

lol yeh, ran out of brushes, plus had no snow textures :(

neat idea dewdle! :P

I can't wait to see the rest of the entries.. who else plans on joining in?

Urby: those spherical solids are neat! I seem to remember we all tried to make spheres in an earlier minicompo(by clipping one brush) and we all failed. =)

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the way they came out. I know they're not going to win "smooth, round, boob-like shape of the year award" any time soon but for goldsource and this competition they'll do fine.

Edit: whaaa :zomg: Brush entities count? I thought it was visible ones only such as func_water etc. Because heres what I have and I am finished.

47 Solids

trigger_push: 6 brushes "one big trigger"
sky_box: 6 brushes
trigger_teleport: 2 brushes "two teleports"
trigger_multiple: 1 brush "targets elevator"
origin: 1 brush "for elevator"
trigger_hurt: 1 brush "fall kill"

17 functional/invisible brushes. 47-17=30 solid visible brushes.

If really neccesary I can get rid of them for the screen shot and than post in the vault with the extras. Either way they don't affect the maps visuals at all. Should I do this or is it fine?
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-05 11:01:30 UTC Post #293039
should be fine zeeba, what is removing invisible entities for a screenshot gonna achieve? lol.

Posted 13 years ago2011-04-05 15:03:40 UTC Post #293044
yeah zeeba, i was gonna delete my orgin/trigger/null/sky brushes too for the screenshot, since they don't count towards the limit, and otherwise, "show map info" will count them as brushes. Or you can just run a breakdown like you did..
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-05 15:22:17 UTC Post #293047
Yea it would just look good for the map info. I could delete the func_train elevator's origin and trigger_multiple and make it a func_plat. Delete the teleport brushes. Delete the trigger_pushes and trigger_hurt.

This would leave me with 36 solids whilst sky being six of them. I will do this just for proof.

And another question. Can't decide between five screenies. Can I have more than three? like cauf five? :walter:
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-05 15:30:08 UTC Post #293049
oh god now i'm really scared if you need 5 screens to show everything... Offer's still good i'll pm you mine if you pm me yours (screenies).

And so, the blockiest Source entry arrives with 25 brushes...

Why not use all 30? This isn't 25 brushes. Looks nice though but pretty simple.

@captain sorry man just got home. Well i'll try to just post my map on here tom. after school. Which will be late but ugh been so busy at school.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-06 05:31:34 UTC Post #293101
What's the problem? This isn't a 30-brush ONLY compo, it's a 30-brush MAX compo. Let him have his 25-brush map.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-06 06:30:02 UTC Post #293105
@zeeba I'm just a tad lazy and could've made the walls less flat and used all of the brushes. My entry's supposed to be bad anyway ;)

zeeba-G: The word you are looking for is minimal, not simple. And coincidentally, using less than what's available is very minimal in spirit.

If you're going to be a pedantic piece of shit then at least get the word right, it's minimalist.

Inspiration doesn't come to you, you have't to find it, you can look anywhere for inspiration, even in your own room, hell it could even be a stack of dirty dishes you haven't taken to the sink yet!

"minimal" is often used as shorthand for "minimalistic" (which is what I think you meant to tell me I meant.) And though I may've come across as a pedantic piece of shit, I was just trying to point out that while simplicity may not appeal particularly to zeeba-G, it isn't a quality that should be looked down upon by default--which just makes me a piece of shit.

Oh dear, I appear to have made quite a mess...

@Scotch perhaps thinking about what type of map you'd like to create; abstract or non-abstract would be a good place to start. After that, scour google images if you don't have a folder of references.
You can make your own abstract ideas out of real-world objects, or try to accurately recreate a real-world scenario in your own way.
Whatever you create, I am sure it would be appreciated(unless it is a fullbright box room).
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-06 12:33:27 UTC Post #293121
Actually both minimalist and minimalistic are both adjective that pertain to minimalism (I actually just looked both words up), but minimal is still completely different.

edit: also just because something is minimalist does not mean it not also "simple".

How do you tell they're different people, by IP? :P

We first check their desktop screenshots and analyze each for repeating patterns in icon layouts. If anything suspicious is found there, we go through all the maps they've submitted (decompile if necessary), and look for patterns in the mapping techniques/style. Identical texture packs used are always a dead giveaway.
If that research backs up our suspicions, we proceed to ban both users permanently.

I thought the goal was to get as much as possible out of the 30 brushes. You know, to use them as efficiently as possible to make an appealing map.

You just went at it in a different take. I didn't mean to start an argument but I just feel that even with 30 brushes it was hard to make an interesting space/map. Apparently source helps quite a lot.

@door. How come the screen in sdk show one hall and the compiled two? :aghast:

@zeeba: There's a wall that the window was hiding, I was... embarrassed by the huge amount of whitespace in that second room.
