I was going to ask what the hell is wrong with your lens until I realised some are manipulated.

My camera takes good detail photos, but it often sucks at color. The above dandelion flowers are a lot more greenish in the original photos, and I wanted to highlight the beautiful yellow I really see.

Also, some effects applied to some photos are just experiments to see how others like them. I somewhat do. I want some opinions :).

[EDIT] Made some more photos today:

If you don't have a good flash, try taking pictures in a well lit area since flash will just bounce off smooth surfaces and cause bad reflection. Also cool old camera.

A well lit area will cause massive distractions away from what I am trying to showcase and is a terrible idea. I am using a [crappy homemade] lighting system. The reflections [on the table at least] are intentional.

If you're referring to the old camera picture, I actually pointed a really shitty flashlight at it to attempt to get some more detail out of the shot, but it didn't really work...

That one was more about attempting to get an artistic direction for it then the lighting, which was honestly terrible :P

Well, pro lighting isnt direct light its usually filtered or reflected. Aluminium umbrellas and light trough paper.

I liked the shot, but lighting was a tag bit bad xD

You know how they say, practice makes perfect.

Yeah I get what you mean, I came close to scrapping it and I just figured what the hell and opened it up and attempted to retouch it to a point where it could be looked at without vomiting. I think I partially succeeded, eh.

All the pictures I took of it ended up being crap and I just found that one to have the best lighting of them all [Even though terrible.], so I used that one as the base.

Crollo: Your photos are all starting to look the same. Different subject, but always the same setting and low light. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying they all look pretty much the same.

Experiment with other settings - i.e buy some A0/A1 sized paper and use it as a solid white backdrop. Raid through your house and loot every desk lamp you can get your hands on (doing it on neighbours' houses is generally a bad idea) and use them as fill lights. For better effect, either shine them through a sheet of tracing paper or bounce them off a thick white paper or a piece of styrofoam.

DiscoStu, somebody already suggested him to try getting outside and making some photos. I am absolutely sure that even in the most boring city you'd still find something to make a photograph of, especially if you can do so in your house.
I'd also appreciate some critics on some of my photos too.

Well I like the second one over the other three. It has some sort of depth feeling even though there are no discernible foreground/background elements. Ah, the subtleties.

How about we make a photography contest?
Posted 13 years ago2011-05-04 04:19:14 UTC Post #294252
If Striker enters then it wouldn't be much of a competition. Would be fun though.

Also kind of disappointed that the Watch image had the reflections showing the camera [And me] in it, doesn't ruin the image but I'm bloody picky with that, ruins the 'clean look' in my opinion.

And I get what you mean about the repetition, I would go for a clean look but I think for most of what I shoot the table compliments the grungy look of the style I'm trying to achieve, and I've also tried looking for some proper lights but we don't really have that many that are unused.

I don't understand. You've just shown us the "pro photographer-cheap camera" situation, and you are afraid of me participating? I'm just doing this for fun, I'm not very advanced. Actually I still consider myself a beginner, not even mid-level or something. Even now I only follow simple rules like the rule of thirds, or intentional inclination of the camera.

I think you are more than capable of making some good looking photographs. I don't have the link right now, but I would want to show you some photos I took with the camera that luckily had a focusing lens, on a phone I had in the past, the Nokia 6500 slide.

It's not so much the equipment behind it all or how much DOF you have in your pictures, it's the mere attention to detail and preservations of detail I always see and regardless how how many pictures you post you still manage to capture the same level of quality as you had before, never rehashed or repetitive [In my opinion], I was mostly joking and I can't speak for the entirety of twhl but for the most part [No offense to anybody else posting, or not posting] But I'd yet to see much of the quality you bring on a somewhat regular basis.

Didn't want to sound like a complete ass kisser but if it came to a contest it would still be fair, I was just poking fun at it. [And at the same time relatively serious because you easily have a eye for detail that I don't quite have, but it isn't my intention to turn this into a 'me and you' comparison.]

You ninja blocked my edit! :D

I found the link, it was a post on my blog: Some test pictures with Nokia 6500 slide. They don't have any special composition(didn't know much about photography at the time, and I surely wasn't inspired to learn with such a 'casual' equipment), but they do showcase what they can be done even with a shitty camera, that has autofocus(it was a pain in the ass to get the focus right, no manual :D).
Also, thank you for you appreciations. I'm about to hit 20gb in my photo archive(but it includes some videos here and there). Most of my photos turn up ugly though. So, I'm pretty 'selective', if you want :P.

Previously I had payed no attention to the 'vintage camera' but upon further investigation [Read: Open battery cover] I'd learned it doesn't take some wierdass proprietary battery format like the Pentax and rather utilizes standard AA batteries.
I also took the film from the Pentax [Only about up to maybe the first or second frame was exposed so the rest of the film should be good] and loaded it into the Ricoh.

Time for some oldschool? Time for some oldschool.

Previously I had absolutely no knowledge how how to work film cameras but a simple once-over read of the manual and it's actually extremely simplistic. I think I can get used to this film stuff. Plus, [film] cameras and film are extremely cheap due to the massive outcome of digital, nobody cares about film anymore. :/

Well, so excited to post these photos as I will be taking more pictures as they grow!

Earlier today we've noticed a bird nest in my mothers hanging flowerpot outside, right next to our patio, they must've gained enough trust in my parents because my parents always throw birdseed on the ground.

Whats remarkable about this is my parents live in a townhouse, the other units are families with children, so why the bird would choose to build her nest in there flower pot is incredible!

I was pretty disappointed with the last photos you posted Crollo, especially after you showed us the attentive detail put into the batteries photo(have you taken those elements from 4,5 batteries? :D), like the arranging and the lighting.
But these last photos look pretty generic...
Maybe the stairs photo looks ok.

Yeah, sitting at school on my lunch hour with nothing to do, had my player with me and said fuck it, and just went out for a hour and took random photographs, usually for a shoot I can prepare everything, get my [Low end] light rig set up and have until the next morning to get everything right. Here, it was [Lightly] raining, windy as hell, and such.
My biggest problem with attending detail was I couldn't see what the fuck I was taking a picture of, after spending an hour trying to work with it, I've decided it's not a great idea to try and use the cheap dim-lit LCD touchscreen in broad daylight as a viewfinder, because it is a terrifying experience.

You definitely have an eye for that kind of detail, but I on the other hand cannot acquire that level of detail unless I can just get everything set up perfectly [In my super-mini studio, to say], and I can't just... Go out and 'take pictures' as you may be able to tell, which is why I've put off on the suggestions to 'go outside' in the past.

EDIT: On the flip side, I wasn't really trying and I was using the worse equipment I could use. I'll bring a proper camera next time I go, tryhard pants included.

The batteries are just standard Alkaline batteries with the labeling stripped [In my opinion they look more industrial when they're stripped].
Could you elaborate on "Elements from 4,5 batteries"?

EDIT: God damn, why does every one of my responses have to become so long? I guess doing summaries in schoolwork really is a good asset after all.

Crollo: Maybe he was asking if you tore apart a 9V battery.

I tried to make that photo tileable, but I've been too busy lately to figure out why I couldn't.
Posted 13 years ago2011-06-08 05:36:10 UTC Post #295402
Aah yes the 9 VOLT, I had that thought in the back of my head for a while but dismissed it.
Besides, it's more simple and isn't as dangerous to strip dead AA batteries, then taking apart a entire 9 VOLT.
