yeh know, I can see why they are making the game for X-box. X-box is made by microsoft, a computer company that uses computer technology and puts it into a game consol, making it have the best graphics, so it is only possable for a few modifications to be made so that the disk and game will also work on the X-box.

I wonder if there will be mapping for HL2 on X-box? That would be cooooll.

"We mark Summer's start and end somewhere between Jan 1st and Dec 31st..."
ROFLMFAOPMP

You have got to be kidding if this guy thinks that actually sounds promising.

Wasn;t this game supposed to come out LAST MARCH?

Half-Life was delayed for 1 year. If they had released it without delaying it, I doubt anyone woul've remembered the title of the game.

So, I don't really care about these delays. Besides, it buys me some time to upgrade my computer and I'm sure that would be a handy thing for a lot of people... ;)

In reaction to Captain P, yes there is proof that the parts shown at E? 2003 were all scripted. For example, the strider had an 'limbo_under_bridge' animation. However I do think that the scripted parts will be gone when HL? gets released. It's very well possible they've prepared for E? 2003 at the end of 2002 where they weren't fully done with the AI yet and thus unable to show their AI in action. I sure hope so because it's not done to lie. However I'm still a HL2/Valve fanboy and I'm quite confidend that everything will be juuuust fine :P

(ps: physics, graphics already rocked @ alphastage)

The shaders dont work.

Wow! It's animated?! You mean they've written code that dictates how things react, that things move? That's awful, they've lied to their community, their fans. I thought HL2 was a biological program that was sentient in its own right.

I totally disagree with u ppl: Didnt scripted AI give birth to some of the finest moments in HL. I dont think AI has come far enough to expect a video game to create its own situations and events without some help from pre-defined orders etc. Stop persecuting Valve and let them get on with creating the best ,all be it linear, FPS ever

Personally I think a combination between scripted and AI will me done sometimes. E.g. the characters get hints (scripted?) but their AI decides how to follow these. This should allow for much more dynamic events and better reactions to the players actions.

But yes, we'd better wait for the release instead of getting mad at each other.

Yeah, I believe the dutch are quite well represented in the HL (editing) community. Talking about that, Dutch people are quite often involved in editing games. In fact the most important editingtools for Command & Conquer and the Sims were written by us :)

Yeah, I have the idea we're strongly represented in modding community's too... :)

The only thing I pity is that our games-industry is still quite small...

But hey, why don't pay a visit to my site, especially my forum? We've gathered with about 10 Dutch mappers over there:

Valve already lost quite some popularity because of the delays. so i don't think the community will forgive another one. I know I won't...

There is no such thing as an official release date. Those are things you only hear about in horror stories and porno mags.

Let me tell you, I am going to have a freakin BALL modding Half-Life 2. Do you know they already released the Modeling program used? It's a standalone I believe, of SOFTIMAGE|XSI specially tailored for HL2's needs. When I watched those demo videos, I think I creamed myself. Seriously. It was a mess, I had to change, and explain a lot to my girlfriend.

Wow, the new version of Worldcraft, I hope it's a bit more customizable. When mapping with the incredible new limits of the HL2 engine, I'll need the biggest viewports I can find. I'm thinking of actually getting 4 monitors and setting them up split-screen (one monitor for each viewport).

You think of a scenario, you can recreate it with Half-Life. Just make sure it includes zombies, of course. :P

What the hell are you gonna drive four monitors with!? You'd need a super mobo that can handle two graphics cards at least. Is it even possible?

Speaking of recreating things in Half-Life, here's HL2 come early - for HL1!

Yeah, look at the VERC. You can program a headcrab to jump off a zombie when you kill it!

I agree with some of you. Scripted AI can be a good thing. The idea that every time we play some level enemies will think/do different things is great, but hard to produce. Number of things they can do is limited. So scripted sequences are just best solution for me. Like someone of saed, we dont have supercomputers for calculations of AI...

I personaly think that it will be nice that sometimes that "combine creeps" turn off the AI. When they look me that their thought is :let's kill him. Rush! No AI. No scripted stuff. Just Rush! Like in Serious Sam.
Soldiers (and assasins expecially) in HL1 often like to kill me from ambush, from behind... That's great, but they never rush on me (exept if they dont have place to run, then then attack me in melee combat).

And another thing. Game put's you in situations, where you know that you have chance to beat your enemies... (exept when you refuse job offer on the end of hl1). Look this: you are in the hangar with 10 hostile soldiers... Hey... No big deal... I have my machinegun and few grenades... Easy...

WHAT!!! EASY!!! 10 vs. one... Just in video games... (oldough, i must confess, that situations are the best)

In HL2 I expect just one (and I repeat: just one) situation when yo now that you are screwed. When you know that you are going to die, and there is nothing that you can do to stop it. Maybe someone else can do something to save you, but you are helpless. Cornered into some room. Soldiers tolking to eachother across the hallway... Gathering... With each second there is more, and more of them.... UUUUHHHH.... I pray god for that...

End then? What? A SCRIPTED SEQUENCE!!!!!!!
Preciousssss scripted sequence, and you are saved...
Maybe, wall is falling down, and trough the fog Barney gets in with a Rocket Louncher... :-) Bwa ha ha ha ha ...

So, point of my little text is:
1. Dont bother much about AI. And if it remains on level as it was in HL1, it wont such a disaster.
2. I have waaay to much spare time :-)
3. Barney-trough-the-wall(tm) is not such a bad idea... Maybe, i'll make a map with that when hl2 finally comes...

The thing i was most impressed by was the AI, from what i've seen, the soldiers seem very smart, so hopefully they won't just stand still and shoot like in some other FPS'
