You're really not missing much, anyways. Whoever is playing just shoots at a sheep and then detonates an unnecessary amount of TNT. If the update is really only about a week off then it's totally worth it not to have anything spoiled.

[edit] you should also stay far, far away from r/minecraft until release :)

I don't see whats going to be spoiled, not much really. :/

Well, the list of additions to 1.8 was sixty-something things long. Even though they've been tweeting so many things, there could still be a couple surprises.

Came across a wonderful texturepack: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/376784-16x-32x-64x-128x-256x-512x17-sphax-purebdcraft-with-aether-v071-260811/

This one has 512x textures as well as Aether support. Im going to give it a try, it looks very nice.

Atom, did you get the 512x texture pack to work? I followed his instructions, but I was only able to get the 256x working.

512x512 texture packs seem rather pointless to me. I switched once from a 128x128 to a 256x256 and the difference is barely visible. You are limited by the cube size. All you're doing is to slow down the game even further.

Some of the texture packs I've seen are utter ridiculous. There are some out there with normal / parallax mapping! WAT!?

@Tawnos: I tried the 512x version on Minecraft with Aether Mod + Seasons Mod + minimap mod but it did'nt run at all. I guess 4 gigs of ram really isn't enough. Loading the texturepack takes several minutes as well as loading the world.

Then i tried a clean installation of MC without any mods with the exception of MCPatcher and i got about 30+ frames. Still, loading the texturepack and the world takes several minutes.

The pack looks great and i'd use it if i had enough ram, i guess 4 GB isn't gonna cut it.

I'll stick to Faithful32 + Aether for now.

@Urby: Indeed, but they are a pain in the butt to install.

Same with the server I play on. Might as well post my home. Basically I made a structure similar to Hiroshima castle for my company and I wanted to make it in Minecraft after finishing it.

It appears 1.8 has leaked and Notch just says enjoy, have fun:

Ooh, looks like 1.8 has leaked, not that I'd ever admit that. ;) Be careful when installing software you don't trust though.

If you do use it, remember to report bugs, and to feel slightly bad. ;)

I am fine with you using it. Make sure you get it from the leaked url we are hosting, though)

Not that im going to get the leaked 1.8, i'll just wait for an official release. :) I suggest you do the same.
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-09 21:50:43 UTC Post #298768
Was playing it in school, fun as hell.
For those of you who are brave. Here is the OFFICIAL LEAK LINK.
http://assets.minecraft.net/1_8-pre/minecraft.jar

Jungles are meh, the underground ravines are nice, and the new lighting is alright.
Also, Iron Ore seems to be more abundant.
And Night lighting has a blue tint. Same with caves, blueish. Pretty cool new lighting.

EDIT: Reported 6 glitches, 1 crash with error log, and noticed a bunch of weird things. I hope Notch doesn't mind all of the tweets.

EDIT: CREATIVE MODE WORKS FINE SO EVERYONE CAN STAY CALM!

Wait wait wait...

I haven't played in a while. Are glass blocks thinner now?

EDIT: Do we have a TWHL server as such, or do you all frequent a certain one? I can't play SinglePlayer MC anymore. Sooo boring.

No, it's a new type of block:

It's crafted by placing 6 normal glass blocks in a rectangle.

Found a natural Stronghold, Happy Dance Time!
Sadly there is an abandoned mine going right through it, notch needs to fix that. New terrain is cool, but often intersects and ruins itself.

Iron Doors with buttons, and what look like little jail cell, if notch expands upon these, I can see some real potential to reach an Oblivion level of dungeon exploring fun.

Something else of note, Strongholds use the regular cobblestone stairs even though there are Stone Slab Stairs, or something like that. odd.

And another thing, the Auto Lighting in the Strongholds hasn't worked yet for me. Not sure if I'm only one with this problem.

Yeah, look at one of my previous posts strike, you manually have to put the new minecraft.jar into your .minecraft/bin folder. Since its just a pre-release.

I've finally convinced one of my friends to use his Paypal to buy it (with me paying him the $21 or so to cover it) and before I give him the money and the info for making an account, I wanted to know... Is the password permanent, or can it be changed? (I'm expecting the latter, but I want to be sure) Also, how large a download is 1.8?

I can't wait to be able to play my own copy of Minecraft instead of mooching what time I can off my friends. :)

Have your friend buy a gift code. You can make a free account and then use the code to upgrade it.

Yup, started playing it again with the pre-release 1.8 file. Sleep patterns are officially fucked again. Damn this game.

EDIT: Ok, reverted back to 1.7 because of the crashes. Already missing the new lighting. Hadn't realised how much it had changed. Waiting on the official 1.8 release now. :D

EDIT EDIT: Anyone else finding a significant lack of coal in 1.8? Been using logs and charcoal since I started testing...

Notch and Jeb need to stop making release dates for updates, they usually miss them, or the update comes 'in parts'. It's their own fault the community gets mad at them.
brendanmint brendanmintBrendan
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-12 21:51:50 UTC Post #298896
They never gave definitive release dates though, when Jeb tweets that he's guessing the release date will be the 12th the community should understand that a guess doesn't mean it will release on the 12th.
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-12 21:56:40 UTC Post #298897
Brendan: Oh, come on. Everyone misses release dates. And with the glaring exception of DNF, I can't think of a single time where the extra wait caused by a delay hasn't been seen as worth it by the vast majority of the community. In the meantime, have some exclusive media of a project I have absolutely nothing to do with besides following it's development.

Posted 13 years ago2011-09-13 00:34:20 UTC Post #298899
I wasn't complaining about it, just something I've noticed. Because when they upset the community, all i see on reddit is FUCK NOTCH reddit posts. I don't find minecraft as interesting as I first found it, and I'm not liking the new 1.8 features, hunger and EXP. Stupid if you ask me. Back to CS:S I guess.
brendanmint brendanmintBrendan
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-13 12:54:31 UTC Post #298903
I'd rather wait just a little longer for a game/update for bugs to be fixed than get it early and have it riddled with flaws.

EDIT: ..... But I wan' it now!!!!

EDIT MK II: I hope you don't play on normal Grim. One little lightning storm could cause that place some trouble >.>
