Alrighty then, it's clearly about time for a new competition. The last time we voted on what to do we were left with some ideas for the next competition, so I think to make it easy we'll start with one of those.

The two ideas people seemed to like the most were the 1024 Cube Space, and the Map From Texture Pack ideas. 1024 would be the easiest to get going straight away, but the texture competition was the most popular. So, I'm after your votes, but remember this:
  • The 1024 competition means you are limited to a 1024x1024x1024 mapping space. You cannot go anywhere outside that, or have anything other than a skybox that goes outside that, whether you can reach it or not. The theme is otherwise completely up to you, so there's a lot you can do with this one. It would have to be designed as a functioning map, deathmatch most likely.
  • The texture competition would mean we need to find a suitable texture pack to use, one that was designed for Source first (with any bump maps etc.), that we can then make into a WAD for Goldsource users. If you vote for this, and can recommend a good texture pack (or contribute to one), let me know. Size and theme are up to you, but you'll be more limited with what you can do because of the available textures. This could probably be a deathmatch or a singleplayer map.
  • Feel free to suggest a new idea, it could be popular.
Like the last competition, Source and Goldsource will be judged together, and we'll be judging on how well you use each engine, and how well you stick to the guidelines.

Texture pack. But a good interrelated thematic one. I've been really busy in school and work literally non stop but I could atleast try. The project i'm doing right now for architecture is actually being entered into a pretty much "irrelevant to our project" competition. Pshh its a "green" type competition but i'm a "design" architect student. Maybe i'll have to sort of adapt. Is it possible to adapt but not conform?

1024 Cube Space

Donno, I just like the 'limited aspects' system, the 30 brush compo was fun.

Texture pack ! :)

1024 space is total crap. Texture pack is better but I think we can come up something more unique.
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-18 11:19:28 UTC Post #299056
I might not be able to enter this time, depending on when the compo starts compared to when my computer is back in commission, but I'm fine with either.
EDIT: But as we've already done a 512x512 cubicles project, then I guess I'll vote texture pack.

Hehe, I just came up with a suggestion. Map something where you are falling. It could be either death match or single player.

Just something were you progress by falling or is falling all the time.

Have not given it too much thought but I think it can be a fun idea.

Map from texer pack.

But i say don't throw 1024 Cube Space in the bin just yet, i'd love to this one too after this compo or some time after that.

I always wondered if we could together write a description or story of a map, how it looks, plays and so on. Then everyone of us would recreate the level from our own imagination and finally we would vote which map reflected the description the best.

That actually sounds like a fun idea Dragos.
Not that I'd participte myself being a poor mapper with little time to spare but I would play the entries.

Just pick anything and go with it. Texture's looking pretty popular so pick it and find someone to make the textures. Or lets select a theme and have everyone submit textures for the theme. Then the moderators can pick which ones they want to use for it from them.

Maybe we could do Dragos' next time? Its interesting too. Jsust seems like the textures one will get off the ground faster though.

Oh, you lazy man. We aren't rushing anywhere, are we? We can do something more interesting than that.

How about... map a description with a texture pack in 1024 space!

I got a new idea: Map a Theme Park. How does that sound?
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-18 22:08:05 UTC Post #299093
Hehe I was thinking about Theme Park too earlier today :P. As long as people dont crouch during roller coaster ride it could be cool. Cuz if you crouch it will get stuck.

This mod has a xen-themed amusement park in it. Wears a bit thin after a while.

I do like the texture the texture pack idea but I like Dragos's idea and the 1024 idea, we should use them all eventually but for now I'd like to do the texture pack one.

I'm not lazy, i'm trying to get things going. This shit usually sits around for months before taking off.

Texture=good idea. Themepark=bad idea. Story=good but may take much time.

How about come up with the story instead of beating around the bush. I've been through this crap before on this site and the most popular one always wins so it tends to be a big waste of time to go through the process. I think it would be a great idea but don't have much time to dedicate to the comp. because of school and work. The texture one might have a better turn out during the beginning of the fall semester...

Posted 13 years ago2011-09-19 01:08:31 UTC Post #299103
What would you do? make a bunch of carnival rides and roller costers? Atleast "goldsource" is a horrible engine for this kind of thing and to make intricate rides would be mayhem. You couldn't have loops, flips etc... Goldsource without spirit doesn't support tied together entities and even with spirit is buggy as hell. I personally am not a big fanof the phony feeling theme parks put off but that's just a personal note.

With all the limitations, more focus would go into making the rides work rather than making them look good and interesting. I would feel too limited to make quality work. Goldsource is just not meant for this... Yes you could do it. I've made a small rollercoaster before and it was pretty ineteresting. But I think that it veres away from design and more towards engineering and that kind of thing.

Comments?

I don't particularly think that 'Make a Theme Park' is a particularly good idea for a competition, it's not abstract enough and entries would tend to be reasonably similar, which makes for a boring competition.

'Map a Story' probably falls into the same category, unless the story is very abstract, but if that was the case you could just make it a compo based on that abstract concept, rather than adding the unnecessary wrapper of the story to hold people back.

'Texture Pack' is obviously the most popular, but nobody has suggested any texture pack to use. Remember that it would need to be built for Source first (due to normal maps and increased resolution), which we could then port down to a Goldsource WAD format. If we can't find a suitable texture pack, then obviously we can't do this one.
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-19 02:05:56 UTC Post #299105
Well It kind of depends on what kind of theme park we do, I suppose.
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-19 05:21:43 UTC Post #299107
I meant not necessarily a story, but at least a simple description where the map is set and how it looks. The colors, the atmosphere, just about everything. We would write a lot of small details on how it looks. And we can either use our own textures or a texture pack. With a texture pack it would be easier I guess.
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-19 05:52:45 UTC Post #299108
I hope I can do this competition, only if it's small. I have two maps I haven't finished yet for hl, one for another game, I have to play through deus ex and now I have college stuff too and I spend most of my day doing kung fu, I have no time.

How about this be a thread where you submit ideas. Than "BY A CETAIN DATE" and I emphasise that because otherwise it tends to go on forever, we cast a vote. Once the theme is chosen we go from there on getting it set up.

So start submitting ideas? And come up with a date. How about give it a week so 11/26/11, all ideas submitted?

So far there's texture pack, story/description, theme park, 1024 units cubed...

If anyone disagrees with this idea or has a better idea go ahead and sorry i'm not trying to run it but just help make it happen. Is this a good idea?
Posted 13 years ago2011-09-19 12:00:26 UTC Post #299113
Sounds like a good idea. We need more dead lines and guide lines to get somewhere.

I don't mean to be egocentric but what about my idea? "Map something where you are, or focuses on, falling. I didn't get any feedback at all.

There are a lot of possibilities with this idea and it's quite abstract. The goal is to use gravity as the main medium of progression. I don't wanna spoil it with ideas but I here are some:

SPOILER, DONT READ!

[s]- Knife / shotgun / pistol - Air battle map (these weapon still has quite good accuracy in air)
  • Some kind of racing map, get down as fast as possible. Well everyone falls at same speed how is this gonna work? Gee wizz, make stuff that reduces the speed as obstacles to avoid or something.
  • Single player / puzzles. Make puzzles or something like those kz (climbing) maps but reverse.[/s]

Yes a poll would be good like the one we had before map something historical

Cool, never seen that game before, seems quite cool and it's a good example of what I was thinking of. Still has room for improvement and different game play ideas though :).
