Great work nosick!!
I'm kinda hoping its for a mod or map pack. It looks incredibly immersive; you've set a great atmosphere.

I like ninja defuse's idea of cityscape. It could be some sort of futuristic skyscraper shop or hotel or whatever. Benches and flowerpots would add a lot more life to it. Try adding some advertisement boards like ones in Hong Kong streets only more futuristic and in several languages perhaps.

This would at least give some purpose to it.

Bruce, you really think my wip map has no idea and purpose? :) If so you are wrong then. Moreover, it's not going to be futuristic city. It's kind of futile to think that map has no purpose judging by only few screenshots :)

I don't see where else you could use so useless and pointless architecture and overall design rather than in some kind of futuristic city purely for aesthetics. Ok, maybe I'm too rational... But then tell me the idea you have in your mind.

Why Bruce is doing this all the time? He loves to be proven wrong.

It's not even remotely about being right or wrong. All that you've shown is that you don't understand the very basic concept of fantasy, and that not everything has to have a purpose - especially in the gaming world. Hyper-reality is far more interesting visually than making everything bland and functional.

In the most literal sense of the word - you are ignorant.

Far more interesting for those who don't use their brains. Anyway, I completely agree that there is such thing as pure art without too much purpose, I mean we're still humans. We eat thing like these everyday. That's what I consider what keeps us alive. Food just fuels our body. Emotions, thoughts and questions created by art is what fuels our minds. But in my opinion when there is thought behind art it reaches higher level. And gaming has nothing to do with it. Game design or real architecture, movies or whatever - all the same shit. And don't call me ignorant. Trying not to be one is one of the things I do all the time. I try to see everything as it is, analyze it and express it honestly.

dragos: maybe try to keep your criticism more relevant/constructive, or if you can't do that, then you could always keep it to yourself.

maybe if even one of your maps was half as good as nosick's work, i might take your comments into consideration, but it would still sound like your pissing on someone's hard work for no reason.

stop derailing an otherwise great thread, please.

I'm trying to move and achieve something rather than being lazy useless creature like you and sit at the same spot and do nothing. So please, if you don't have what to say just shut up. And my crititism, or whatever you call it, says all I want to say.

What he could do is...

...add multiplayer spawns. Then it has a purpose.

Really, very little art has an actual purpose. Art is not an object to be analised, it is an expression of creativity. In the end, it is about how you feel about your creation, not what others think, only feel. If people like it, good for you, if not then it's just one step in your creative ladder.

In any case, art should not be taken literally. People who take art literally are the ones that believe violence in video games are resposnible for teen violence and aggression.

Wow, you have a flair for being surprisingly nasty, Herr Dragos. kudos! =)

And while i still don't agree with your dismissing nosick's work--or art for that matter, lol--as being "totally nonsense", i'll agree with instant mix that some of your other points are interesting, but consider:

-compliments are NOT useless. they let someone know if their hard work wasn't for nothing and they've accomplished something worthwhile. Nosick has clealy produced something praiseworthy.

Criticism is fine if it has some logical basis. simply dismissing someone's hard work as useless because it's not realistic, or has no counterpart in the real world is just plain-wrong imho.

Also possibly, you are having trouble expressing yourself properly in english? If this is the case, i apologize for the parts of my post which were passively antagonistic, as they were completely uncalled for.

Joe: That looks a sight better than the other HD 'gus' construction remakes I've seen. You even got a custom face texture true to the original, instead of reusing Otis' face. Are you going to remake the old animations too, or reuse some barney/scientist ones?

Wow, just wow. Yeah, I can see some people are just totally worth ignoring, so that's what I'll do. Don't you worry about it noSICK, I think you've done a great job.

In other news:

I've seen HD gus somewhere before, not sure where thought. Either way, looks pretty good.

I've been remaking my old first released map, Streetlevel:
User posted image
Compare it to the old release shot:
User posted image
Most of it is pretty finished though there is still quite a lot to do. My main goal has been accomplished though seeing as the original maps r_speeds was 8400+ max, and this version is 3400+ max.

noSICK, superb work. I didn't even feel like posting my shot of Streetlevel. Has an awesome Cyberpunkish feel to it, definitely would like to host a map like this on some of my severs(Scientist Hunt and The Specialists port?) It also reminds me of Gunman Chronicles.

Joe, sweet looking model. It's pretty faithful and matches well with the other HD/SD models.

that's a great improvement, 'specially in terms of that wpoly!

Some stuff still looks a little blocky to me, and some of the texture choices are a little strange(at least what i can make out from the pic), but still good work.(pm me if you'd like more detailed critique)

You're replacing that horrible default skybox for the final version too i hope! =)

I do plan to, but I'm not so sure by what you mean blocky. I am trying to go for more of a 1998/1999 styled map, though it might be lacking some detail in that area?

Sun spread angle done first time in GoldSrc history. Made in vanilla HL. I'm thinking of making an entity for it in collaboration with vluzacn in his custom build of ZHLT.

No, not at all. It's still the same single light style and same lightmap. Apart from sacrificing 20 entities solely for sun. And if spread angle is very big (if sun is under clouds) you might need like 50 entities to get the shadow smooth. My picture is only 4 degress and I used 17 entities.

Things you must remember: you have to remove ambient lighting (sky lighting) from all the entities except one by setting _diffuse_light 0 0 0 0. Also if you want sun's brightness to be 200 and you have 20 entities then you have to use only 10 brightness on each of them which combined will give you 200 (10x20=200).

As I always say it's all about efficiency. GoldSrc always had so much hidden potential which costs nothing. Like bounce depending on texture color and this method.
