Attention TWHL: The Diablo III beta is now OPEN!

Even if you don't have it in your account, download the proper client, run it, and BOOM!

I've heard that switching to US client can solve this not working for some reasons for some people, but I just downloaded it and launched it and I'm playing! I've got to go to work of course, but I'm going to play when I get back. Hopefully some of you do too and we can play together!

HAPPY HUNTING!! HERE'S TO MAY 15!!

Meh at best.
If this is considered a 'bad ass card' then we really aren't pushing technology very far. Several years ago 1GB cards were the norm.
We need to push games and technology so that we could actually practically need or in some way utilize a 2GB DDR5 DX11 card, otherwise we'll just have another couple years of 2GB cards with no advancement or need short of bragging rights [EG: DX10 cards]

Maybe I'm just too stupid to appreciate 'amazing' technology, but I've played BF3 [the holy grail of PC graphics, apparently] with all the settings maxed out, AA maxed out, on a 1080p set and i was not impressed. This can't possibly be the best we have to offer.

Oh there is so much more to it than the amount of memory.

Do some homework and check back later. There are actually a lot of cool tech specs I wont cloud up this thread with.

As for BF3, sure its nice and all, but its on a 2-3 year old engine.

Look at the UE3 Samaritan Demo if you want a look at the future (which btw was run on 3 580's at E3, can now be ran on a single 680)

What's the point of having a car with 400 horsepower [GPU with DX11, DDR5 etc] when the roads you drive on [Games that you run] don't even let you properly reach it's full potential? [Properly utilize DX11, DDR5 etc]
Use a good high performing card that has lesser specs [DX9\10.1, 1GB DDR3 memory etc] and you're not going to be at a very large disadvantage to the DX11 and DDR5 cards, as very few games actually use the full potential of those newer technologies.

If games started to use DX11\DDR5\etc over DX9\DDR3\etc like games started to use DX9\DDR3\etc over DX7\DDR\etc, then purchasing that kind of hardware would make sense... But otherwise it makes as much sense as those people who buy 16GB of DDR5 ram, and then run games like Burnout Paradise and BF3. Unless there's a need for it [where anything lesser wouldn't get you very far], it's called unnecessary.

Hi my name is Don Punch, I am a game designer working with the latest build of the UE3 engine.

As for your 1st question, style is the answer to that riddle.

I looked at your Samaritan demo and maybe I'm just completely blind but I see nothing that would require DX11 or that behemoth of a card. It looks like a tech demo that has for once actually pushed reasonably detailed environments and effects that could easily be accomplished with a good DX10 or DX9 card. Maybe DX11 helps detail slightly with the tessellation technology, but I see no reason you can't get that level of detail with a good DX9 card.

If anything I'm still not impressed. Look at the Nvidia head demo, and compare it to the Samaritan's head in that video in the close up. The technology to create highly detailed environments is not a dx11 and etc technology exclusive. We just chose not to utilize what we have now.

lol I wish that was my demo

I am more interested in what games you have seen that look that good on dx9.

Keep in mind, that is not a cinematic, it is all rendered in real time, aka gameplay footage.

Well, that's the point, there aren't many good looking DX9 games because game developers never put out decently detailed environments, characters, or etcetera. We haven't even pushed DX9 to a good point and we're rushing out all this new DX11 and DDR5 technology? I think we need to actually push the envelope of what we have before we start to rush into entirely new technology.

EDIT: Right, my bad didn't realize what thread we were in.
