Personally, i feel this is a bad idea for a mapping competion.

Floating islands are the biggest mapping cliche since i don't know what. Well, maybe "cliche" isn't the right word, but this is my first impression.

Anyhoo, if you guys decide to got with this i hope i'm wrong and it is a wild success ;)

i think the fy compo would be neat(i really do), but i feel it should wait since we just had a cs compo.

I love the more restrictive compos like 30 brushes or map-from-texture-pack, because they force you to be creative and experiment.

It is sort of cliche. But like anything, if you put it in a competition it will push it a little further. Sometimes competitions drive me to map stuff I normaly wouldn't, or wanted to but needed the nudge.

Floating city idea is rainbow fantastic in my eyes, but it would take lots of self motivation to complete succesfully.

I liked the fy idea because it is shorter and less time consuming as I have some other things i'm working on this summer and may do a mini mester. None the less I plan on mapping one anyway so I don't care.

Although more restrictive competitions do force you to be creative in a different way, it's all a matter of self motivation. Truthfully you could be more creative with limitless textures rather than using a given texture set to work with. Restrictions force you to improvise which is creative in itself but imagine if you improvise without restrictions.

Map a floating sky village.

Any game, any theme, as long as it floats and could be lived in. Any method of flotation accepted, be it technology or magic.
the best idea so far...

Cool! But your gonna have to try harder than that! ;) Muahahaha

Damn. Source sure would pay off right now. I guess I better learn it for future competitions. Apparently i'll never quit mapping...

Been too busy learning and using rhino.

I want to build a sphere sanctuary out of concrete in my backyard and am trying to fig out a good way to build it. I want to build the sphere out of one modular geometry. I am also currently designing a tree house with friends from school that we are going to build. :glad:

If I knew this would have happened, I would have qued up for that CS:GO beta lane at least 10 times, to get 10 beta keys.

You were right, mapping for source is hell lot more fun, especially how easy making terrain is!
Dont worry, soon the game will be out and we will be able to buy it :D

Strojke, what's with the evil gestures? :aggrieved:

The dream competition was spoken of before it was official so I was able to get a little head start on it. You might as well do so for this one. And it seems that it will be over right around then if it's two months and starts this weekend.

@ captain. Noooo! :aghast:

@ skals. Muahahahaha. Well think about it like this. Last competition an extension was cast after I was already finished with my entry. And it still won. It was a time management gamble for those that didn't finish in time at first. Like wise, starting early is a gamble because you could be wasting effort.

Starting before your sure it's official is just playing it smart.

More like seizing given opportunity. No one said wait until the pistol's fired to begin.

I can't help but begin imagining what to do for this competition. And if I want to start more power to me. It's what bennefit being attentive yields. Grim clearly said he is going to make it official for everytone to read.
Posted 12 years ago2012-06-20 23:17:47 UTC Post #307287
skals, i kno you are not preaching competitive ethics, when for the texture compo you recycled an old map as your entry... If i was a judge i would have disqualified you immediately for that, lol :P

2 months is like an eternity anyway, and nobody should need that much time for one of these compos. the only reason people like me are always late is cuz qe put off mapping till the last minute.

I was already done with Poison Garden when the HLDM map compo started. It was sent in on the second day, and won first place anyway.

Should Iron Chef it and require a secret ingredient that makes the map valid, and the ingredient is revealed when the compo actually starts. Just a thought to fair things up. I've thought about starting early too, but lack the inspiration at the moment.

Haha, what. That's a stretch Rim lol. Geez I could only imagine how good it would have been if you did it during it.

Yea, within two months one could easily finish a map. Heck in a few days if you were committed enough. I procrastinated de_dust_thunder quite a lot. I think saying what will be the competition only days before it's posted isn't that bad though.

I too lack the motivation to actually start yet. Just saying that I could.

If I ever map a hl dm map again, the player will spawn with multiple weapons and items. The glock is complete garbage. In fact, this level might call to start with gauss. I normaly wouldn't give away ideas like that but I think others could use it for this competition.

Do you really wish to know?

Also, cool, i know Zeeba will map something crazy xD
Thats why im trying to learn to make greater details in XSI so i can compete, even by a slight percent, with Captain Terror and others :D

I think 2 months should be enough to make it the way i imagined it, if not, meh, who cares, its for the fun :D

floating islands are a pain in the ass. why not something simple like "make a crate"

that'd be fun

Remember when we did the 1024x1024? What if we did "Make an as interesting and detailed a 256x256 maximum room as you possibly can"?

I'm imagining individual brushwork tiles and stuff like that.
Posted 12 years ago2012-07-24 19:47:54 UTC Post #308366
actually that's quite a good idea, due to the small size the small the small details will be able to stand out

I think though we should do a competition based on something really obscure. We've had map from texture packs as well as map from layouts, but what about something like map a song? or a specific "base this map around a sound". Wether that sound is part of some complex puzzle, or the throb of an engine or something. I don't know.

The sound idea is cool. We would have to decide on what type of sound in general beforehand I think. If the sound was mechanical some people might think it was too easy, others might think that gives a broader range of entries. If the sound was really really strange or organic, trying to find a fitting use might turn entries away. I like the idea a lot. Personally I'd vote for a mechanical sound because I'm a noob.
Posted 12 years ago2012-08-25 17:33:33 UTC Post #309378
While that 'Map a sound' idea sounds interesting, I don't think anything good will become of it. Personally I wouldn't join such a competition.

What I would like however, is a competition (like blitzkrieg stated) - detail a 256x256 space. But I'd prefer if it was bigger than 256x256. Or how about the playable space is only 256x256, but you can have objects outside of it for detail, and skyboxes or that type of thing, but there must actually be something preventing the player getting outside the box, not just an invisible wall... that would be slightly different than what we had before.

Well I would prefer something that was quick, rather than having to make some massive map that took a month to create.
