seems like a lot of work to construct an entire 3d model for each texture, when archie's "piss about with photoshop layers" method works just as well.

@Taylor
Heh, i said the same thing to Archie on steam last night.

The best way I know of to make good textures is to be Strider. Unfortunately, making textures and actually using them in a released product are two very different things.

Temporary homepage while we're still working on the mod. There are now 65 entries in the SVN logs which you can view at random by hitting the refresh button (on site, not your browser) and get a little taste of our feelings towards the mod. :P

Competition time!

Design a PC application that a scientist might be using on their computer. Either draw it, design it as a texture or describe it. Obviously people who actually make their entry rather than describing it will probably have a better chance of winning.

Think along the lines of data analysis or chemical comparisons or teleport research etc.

The winning entry will appear in The Core (although probably just using the entry as a basis for a new texture) and the winner will be credited.

You'll also receive 2 steam product keys:

Payday: The Heist
&
Dota 2 Beta

Competition closes Sat 6th Oct, so not much time. Post entries in this thread.

I'm thinking perhaps some kind of physics simulation? The rendering shouldn't be too fancy, you don't want to use processing power on something as unnecessary as that. It should look just complex enough that you can understand what is going on, perhaps like some kind of green vector rectangular shape on a black background?

No. And you're too young for that.

Not sure what my chances of making anything good and winning would be, but I'll give this a shot.
Would you prefer the highres version to be 1024x768, or 1280x1920?

1280 x 1920 is rather odd!

The designs will probably be used on 16:9 monitors, but don't worry too much about it because I'll be adapting the winning entry to fit with existing textures anyway - as such Striker's 4:3 entry stands just as much of a chance of winning as a 16:9 entry.

If you're worried, 1600 x 900.

1280 x 1920 is rather odd!
Either it's the native resolution on my 16:9 monitor, or I'm having memory problems again. 50/50 chance. CBA to do the math or go into my room and check right now.
But knowing I can do it in 16:9 means I can use as much room as I have on my monitor to do this, more buttons and readout boxes!
EDIT: Oh, just checked a screenshot I made, it's 1920x1080. I got the order wrong too.
Ha ha.
Kill me.

Just a note, wavy things with no values on is no use to anyone. Hell, considering what i've done, they'll have spreadsheets open. Lots and lots of goddamn spreadsheets.

What do you mean you're not entering, Strideh?
Are you saying you're not interested in the prize? I'm aware you already have Payday...

If you're honestly saying we can use them for nothing that'd be awfully lovely of you - you'll certainly be credited!

How about this?

Considering it shows an actual program used from one of my labs during undergrad engineering - LabVIEW experiment control software with a setup to control and collect data from a pitot probe traversing a supersonic jet of fluid. Included is a still from a Schlieren camera (these things are cool) that lets you actually see the supersonic flow as well as the shock diamonds that form as a result of the nozzle.

Also for completion I added the data from that pass of the probe, as well as a shameless plug for TWHL.

If you'd like the raw files, where you can actually see the entire panel of the program without the extraneous data, just ask.

Plain vanilla GUI for running test simulations, with an online paper on Resonance Cascades in the background. There are a few references on it.

Also may contain coarse language*

*Does contain coarse language. I'm sure it's fine, or will be once it's HL-sized.

If I somehow end up winning, don't bother with the Dota 2 beta, because I'll likely never get a chance to use it. In fact, if Payday doesn't have some form of offline mode/bots, you might not want to bother with that, either, because I'm not sure if people will still play it by the time I can do so online. Someone else deserving can have them.

24 hours(ish) left on this competition if you wanna quickly throw an entry together!

Edit:

Or not!
Anyhoo, Cstriker wins!
The other entries are cool, and I love that you used real applications, but I always prefer creativity over reality and Cstriker's has a nice amount of visual elegance. I won't be using the actual image you submitted because it contains copyrighted material, but I'll create one based on your design and layout and you'll be credited.

I've PM'd you the Steam Product Keys

The Dota 2 one won't work after it's released, but after it's released it'll be free anyway. This just gives you access to the beta. :3

The Payday one is unlimited.
