That game looks like a lot of fun, Archie. I'll have to try it. Also, I think I didn't die this time because of some deep, subconscious feelings you have towards me, but now is not the time or place.

hlife_hotdog: That's pretty much what I took away from playing the demo. The story was interesting, but the gameplay wasn't at all.

As for me, I am so damn excited for Dishonoured. It's been more than a decade since we've had a proper immersive sim, and recently playing System Shock 2 and Deus Ex 1 put me in a mad craving for one. Cannot wait.

I gave Receiver a go. Difficult to get a hang of, but it's quite fun once you do. Although those flying drones are bloody impossible.
The furthest I have gotten so far is 3 tapes found, killed by one of those drones while listening to the fourth.

And that game does look like fun. I hadn't been looking at your posts because I misread and thought that was To The Moon, which I hadn't played yet. I'm looking forward to any updates now.

[Edit] Surprisingly for such a game, it seems to require a lot graphically. It's quite laggy for me, even when playing at 800x480.
Although despite that, in my last game I managed to take out 3 drones in a room with a 1911, before waltzing into the next room and being cut down by a turret.
My next game, I spawned with a revolver loaded with one round, right in front of a drone. :|

Having actually looked at some of the WarZ media I must admit that it looks sexy as Hell. I only recently learned that DayZ's standalone release is still going to use the ARMA engine. Think I'll just give it a miss completely if WarZ gets some good reviews.

Battlefield 3 is a disgusting singleplayer game.
Can't argue with that. Quick time events, predictable story and dull combat. It's all about the online play.

Also, I did some digging on The WarZ. Got around to watching some gameplay footage this evening as well as discovering it's being developed by the people who brought us War.Inc...

Dimbark, it's not even a single player game.

It didn't even have a single player mode at all until the fourth or fifth game in the series, which was a remake of Battlefield 2 with shinier graphics for the Xbox. Previously in the series you could just play offline multiplayer matches with bots.

And on the subject of The WarZ I've got mixed feelings. It's pretty clear that they are taking every bit that they can from DayZ at this point. Even though their game was in development for longer, it was originally nothing like it is now. At this point in development they're just ctrl C and ctrl V.

That being said I'm all for competition as it means the best game will win, and I would not be surprised at all if that game is the standalone version of DayZ.

That looks really good, but at the same time, the blue fog is way way overdone. I know that air does have that effect over a great distance, atmosphere is after all both thick and liquid in a sense, but that seems like too much. Is the whole game that way? I never saw that at all in any of the trailers.

Sure it isn't realistic, but that doesn't seem to be the central theme of the graphics anyway.

The game looks amazing in motion. Super fluid, painterly, smooth and incredible.

It has some definite HL2 vibes, but personally I'd say it's closest in style to The City of Thief fame, but I don't expect many modern gamers would catch that.

I totally recommend the game, some of the best level design and emergent design to come about in a decade. I also recommend you turn off the tool tips and just find your own way through the world. This is a game that greatly rewards you for exploring and rooting yourself in it's world, and it's easy to do when the world is that pretty.

In other news, I started a new Oblivion playthrough today, and all I have to say is ohgodwhydidIdothat?! For some reason I just can't seem to sink into Oblivion the way I do with Fallout 3 or Skyrim. The combat and environment just seem...lacking. Too long-winded and bland, I guess. I dunno.

Yeah people complained about Skyrim's main quest line being to short, but Oblivion's main line was going through like fifty portals that all looked EXACTLY the same.

I'd rather have the option of going through a short quest slowly than be forced to grind through that crap again. Ah well, both good games of course.

That's probably because you realized within like half an hour that you only had two options:

1: fight for the imperialistic Empire invading a land that they had no rights to whatsoever and murdering everyone that disagreed, and:

2: fight for the racist, nationalistic, bigoted Nords who were at least honorably protecting their homeland but spoke of every other race as if they were less than people and completely disposable.

Skyrim got fuckin heavy man. That's part of why I liked it. The main quest was short as hell but I was seriously conflicted. There was no obvious "good side".

In Oblivion there was one choice. Meet the prince then go through all those damned portals and prove that he was the king. Or something. I don't even know.
Posted 12 years ago2012-10-14 10:47:14 UTC Post #310368
I thought the main quest of Skyrim was to defeat Alduin? Does this mean I haven't 'finished' the game yet?
Really, I'd like a third option for the civil war: Negotiate Peace between the Legion and the Stormcloaks, and kill the hell out of the Aldmeri Dominion.

"Guys, guys! GUYS! Neither of you are really against Talos worship, are you? Empire, you're just enforcing a treaty you were forced to sign. You're not happy about it. This war is doing noone any good. You know who it is doing good for? The Thalmor. You are killing each other off, weaking yourselves, so the Thalmor can swoop down and exterminate any survivors when the dust settles. So instead of killing each other, why don't we kill them instead?"
Notewell NotewellGIASFELFEBREHBER
Posted 12 years ago2012-10-14 13:43:40 UTC Post #310369
The main quest line IS the destruction of Alduin. You can stay out of the civil war entirely. I quite enjoyed the civil war quest line except for all the running around you had to do, but the Alduin one was just total pants.

It is quite possible to bring peace between them.

Ever do the quest with the talking dog? He leads you to a quest where you get a choice to stop all war; but then you have to pick a side and talk about peace to one of the siege camps, I believe.

The possible peace treaty has nothing to do with that quest. The peace treaty quest is a main quest only available if the player has not yet completed either civil war quest line by the time of capturing a dragon in Dragonsreach.

[edit for relevance]

Now playing Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

TL;DR much, much, much better than Medal of Honor 2010

Got it for half off because I'm Battlefield 3 premium, figured why not, it's actually really fun once you get into it. It will take you 2 hours to get used to the mouse acceleration, weapons handling, buddy system, ect. and you will die a shit-ton.

Won't say anything about the campaign, because I only did the first 2 missions, although general consensus is that it's much better than BF3's. That's like saying it's better than terrible though, so take that as it is.

Instead of squads of 4 like in BF3 you are in pairs. Buddies can spawn on eachother, and heal eachother by holding down E on your bro for about one second. Once the bar fills you have healed him and refilled his ammo. Pretty cool mechanic, doesn't take long, but long enough to prevent abuse of it. Weapon handling is also very different from BF3. There is more vertical recoil to the weapons in addition to the spread, a welcome change in my opinion. It's getting compared to CoD a lot, but IMO it's more of a middle-ground between CoD and BF3.

There are 72(!!!) soldiers (essentially classes, compared to 4 in BF3 and 5+5 custom in CoD) and the weapon customization is pretty deep. Guns have stats and parts change those stats, everything from barrels to stocks to receivers can be unlocked and swapped out and affect the weapons statistics.

It also has "seasons" similar to some strategy games, where players are divided by nation and nations are ranked. Nothing game changing, obviously large nations like the US and Russia are at an advantage, but it's always fun to root for the home team.

Downsides include a range of glitches and bugs, so if those things annoy you, i'd wait a while for some patches to roll out.

All in all I would only recommend this to people who either enjoyed the previous MoH, enjoyed both CoD4 and BF3, are BF3 premium and will only have to pay $30 for a distraction until the new expansion launches, or people who enjoy objective-based modern-themed multiplayer FPS a whole bunch.

Screenie of the classes, and the few I unlocked after about 2 hours of playing.

Not trying to persuade you to buy it, but comparing it to bf3 is like comparing apples to oranges IMHO. Both are modern-set fps, and both fruit are fruit. It is really nothing like battlefield. Bf3 is objectively better in my opinion.

A short while ago I bought To The Moon on Steam. I got it because it was relatively cheap, and I had the impression from somewhere that it was alright, although I may have been mixing it up with another game. So I bought it, and started playing with very little expectations. I got about five minutes in before I had to go to bed, and I forgot about it until last night, when I decided to give it another go.
This time I played for more than five minutes, and this was sufficient to suck me into the story. This is an amazing game, one that I am absolutely happy that I bought. With that second playthrough I couldn't help but keep playing until the end. The characters were well done, there was plenty of drama (probably the wrong word, but for the life of me I cannot think of the right one), plenty of humor, and it had an interesting and engaging storyline.

The story itself is somewhat of a mix of Total Recall and Inception, although definitely more quiet and puzzle based than action-ey. The player characters are Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts, who work for a company called Sigmund Corp. that specialises in implanting memories into dying peoples minds, so that to them it's as if they fulfilled their lifelong dreams. In the game they are working for an old man, who's wish is that he had gone to the moon. The gameplay revolves around finding items that are important to the patient, and using them to travel backwards in his memory until you get to a point where the memories can be implanted. The gameplay isn't really difficult, and most of the time is less of a game, and more of a way of unlocking the next piece of the story. There are some bits where the game gets slightly more action, but these are the minority.

Overall, while the game was good, I wasn't fond of the ending.
[Spoilers, by the way]
While the ending was good, it didn't strike me as positive. Yes, John gets to go to the moon, and stays with River, but nothing about it was 'real'. Yes, that is the whole point, but it is not something I would have wanted had I been in John's position. While he gained all of that, and still had memories of River, they were fabricated memories, and he has lost all of his real experiences with her. Although I guess you could say it doesn't matter, as he will never know the difference.
[End spoiler]
That is not to say that it is a bad ending by any means. It is just one that doesn't sit well with me. You may see it differently.

Overall, my opinion if it is very positive, and I would absolutely recommend that you get it.

[Edit] I forgot to mention, as an idea as to how engrossing the story is, I started playing last night at around 2-3am, intending to give it a go for five minutes before I went to sleep. I finished at 6am, and I had to get up for uni at 6:30 am, a fact which I was fully aware of.
I am absolutely exhausted right now, and today is going to be a relatively busy day, yet I am happy I stayed up to finish it.

MechWarrior IS BACK! Open Beta Style!

MechWarrior: Online

EDIT: Forgot to mention, its FREE to play.

Some of you might remember back in 2008 or 2009 there was a video posted by IGN featuring scenes from what was referred to as "MechWarrior 5", however there was a "supposed" controversy over licensing rights of some of the 'Mech designs used in the video. As it turns out there was never an issue and that was all a bunch of malarkey, seeing as the video was only a tech-demo for what is now known as MechWarrior: Online, which is now running on CryEngine 3.

For those of you who don't know anything about MechWarrior, you are the pilot of giant, lumbering, walking battlemechs armed to the teeth pumping lasers, missiles, and ballistics into your opponents torsos and limbs.
User posted image
The game takes place in the BattleTech universe in the year 3049, which is about a year prior to a major event in that timeline known as the Clan Invasion. The game is designed to progress in real-time, where one year in game is one year in real-life.

MechWarrior: Online can be loosely defined as a "first person shooter", but not in the same sense as many know it to be. If you play this game like a typical "run-and-gun" style FPS like Call of Duty, you will die, and most likely your team will die as a result of a loss of firepower.

The game is designed to be heavily team-oriented with communication and coordination being paramount, and as a person who played in closed-beta I can certainly vouch for that. (Kill/Death Win/Loss ratio of .5 before to 2.1 after joining pre-made groups on Teamspeak.)

This tutorial video explains a lot about the game and how to play.

The game has just opened to the general public for BETA today and still requires a bit of tweaking/work but so far I have had a lot of fun whilst playing (more so when in a group that is communicating.)

If anyone wants to join in the carnage hit me up.

One thing I have noticed is how it massively overdoes things with the cartoon sound effects. I'm sure it was comical back in the day, but the volume and quality fluctuates with every single one.

Taking a leaf from Urby's book, I decided to play a point-and-click game I remembered from my childhood (not quite so early in my childhood however), so I downloaded the demo for Neighbours from Hell, a game for which I used to have a demo disk. Oddly enough, this demo disk also had Half-Life: Uplink, even though that came out almost five years earlier.
Anyway, the game(demo) itself isn't that bad. It could potentially be a fun time waster, if you've got quite a lot of time to waste. Assuming you get the full game though. The demo is only two levels long, not including the tutorial.
