How is everyone else coming along?
Ha ha ha... Whoops.

EDIT: I remember now why I haven't been working on it - the main setpiece isn't done, and I need to dig out some equipment to finish it - equipment I don't have a proper place to set up as of yet.
Which is kind of a lazy excuse, since I could theoretically pull my tablet out at any point and then just pack it up again, but...

Well there's plenty of time.

I haven't started mine yet, and i will estimate it will take 2 months minimum for all the peeps to complete their entries, AND then it's a month for me to put them together, so yeah: you have time :)

BTW, my CEVO Entry started out as a room for this ;)

DiscoBro
Do you plan to enter a GS entry, or should i strike you from the list?

I'm testing things while I wait for my desk to arrive.
Now, when you say the playable area cannot exceed 2048x2048x2048, you mean places the player can get to without using cheats, correct? I'd be fine having stuff mapped out that isn't in the 3D skybox but is there instead mostly to allow soldiers to spawn unseen?

Haha that is hilarious Jeff =P

And yeah, the size limit is only on the playable area of the map(the 3dsky and inaccessible areas can be as big as you like) ;)

Had a good giggle at that Jeff. Couple of my colleagues gathered round as well. Good video. :P

So I'm starting concepts for some different hub-map ideas for Rooms II.

For the first hub theme idea, I'm going to set it up where you can play each map individually--like Reissues--, or all the maps together. (there will also be a small amount of gameplay)

Once i have something worth showing, I'll sync the vmf to a dropbox folder for all rooms content, so feel free to share your wip folder if that suits you!

If you'd like to be invited to the dropbox, pm me your email. (i will try find them from your profile and invite authors when the folder is ready)

Edit
I've invited every author I could to the dropbox who had an email listed and/or a website contact. Please let me know if I missed anyone!

Eurrgghhhh

why is it that when I should've been revising for my exams I had a massive burst of motivation to map, but now i'm bored shitless stuck in a shitty little town I have 0 motivation?

I've accepted the dropbox thing btw

Dropbox folder is live, so feel free to upload your WIPs! (I'll add space if needed)

And yeah Instant Mix, inspiration/motivation are tricky! Try and take advantage of the motivation when it's there, and sometimes you make something pretty enough that you can't help but go back to finish it. (Your wip is absolutely amazing btw! =P)

How are everyone else doing? Here are my WIP album for the hub. (Still haven't been able to get into Ep2 SDK yet, maybe because the source SDK 2013 SP thingie hasn't finished downloading) ;)

Captain! Just download Ep2, and launch any dev tools from the common/bin folder.
There is no common SDK launcher Ep2 anymore.
Btw,

I must resign, as stated in my journal. Sorry guys :(

Sorry to lose you Tet! Feel free to come back later if you change your mind, as i have a feeling it's gonna be a while before it's complete ;)

I remembered your Source SDK fix thread yesterday and planned on trying it out tonight. (Is that still the current fix?)

Also btw, do i need the Source SDK base 2013 SP thingie? (i don't think it finished downloading, i have my steam bandwith settings clocked way down, lol)

You don't need the sdk base 2013.
If you're modding for a Valve game, you just need that game.

All the tools are in the bin folder, and launch them with the .bat file. If it's not working, you gotta go into your environment variables (right-click MyComputer > properties etc etc) and remove anything that says VProject.

THEN you can run the batch file to launch hammer properly.

I resigned because, like a fool, I'm taking 2 summer classes again this semester. I gotta finish school ASAP, I'm sick and tired of being overworked and exhausted - the quicker i can knock these last 8 credits down, the better.

I wanna map the world, but i am only one man with too many dedications and too little time. I miss the over-abundance of time and inspiration that was high-school.

I might do a little something something but that's only if I have a free weekend or something. I don't foresee that for a little while.

P.S. everything's in the book :walter:
Electronic copies are cheaper than softcover

You have a lot on your plate, nobody is gonna think less of you if you don't enter, really... Good luck with your summer sessions, i will pray for you! (summer sessions fucking blow, especially 2 of them!)

Would I be able to participate? I know I have a lot going against me (late to start, slow mapper at the best of times, already have a fairly hefty mapping project on my plate) but I really enjoyed the original Rooms and would love to contribute to a new one.

Also, I have a few Steam keys lying around (Frozen Synapse, X-COM: Enemy Unknown) for use in the prize pool, if nothing else.

Absolutely Silvertongue!

You have PLENTY of time left, and i will make concessions for anyone who needs help and extra time at the end! No need to rush!

I am also a slow mapper. My advise is don't try to rush or cut corners, and you will gradually get faster. (Every time i rush, it just creates more problems and retrorfiting/fixing that needs to be done later)

And thanks for the prizes! We are amassing quite a prize pool for this!

Current Prize Kitty
  • $20 in Steam games(Thanks to Archie!)
  • Misc. Steam games(Thanks to AJ!)
  • Contagion Steam key(Thanks to Strider!)
  • Nuclear Dawn Steam key(Thanks to Strider!)
  • 1 Packet of Gum(Thanks to TJB!) =P
  • Frozen Synapse Steam key(Thanks to Silvertongue!)
  • X-COM: Enemy Unknown Steam key(Thanks to Silvertongue!)
Awesome! =P

Cool. Looks like I need to start brainstorming if I'm going to measure up.

Random Rooms II Question
Would Gmod be a good alternative engine to do this in?

I'm not suggesting we change it now(since people aready started), but would GMOD make a good engine to do Rooms in? I'm guessing yes, but never mapped/played it, so i've no idea!

How is everyone doing with their entries? I plan to start working on the Hub again tonight, and concurrently my DM map in Sledge :P

I'd try if I didn't suck at mapping, and if I wasn't working on another map atm. Hope one of the rooms is spaced themed, looking forward to playing this.

This kind of fell by the wayside for me. Not sure if I'll be able to actually finish it, but I hope so, considering the unique stuff I already did for it.

I'm not sure about GMod. AFAIK it doesn't add many (if any) map entities, and the exact version of Source that it runs on is kind of a mystery to me. Besides, I feel like Episode 2 fits the goal of 'walk through a sequence of rooms without weapons/tools' a lot better anyway.

Sees Tetsu0's picture, immediately trashes current map idea and starts over
Posted 10 years ago2014-06-17 19:17:27 UTC Post #319849
Yeah, I guess I was also thinking all the 3rd-party models would be an advantage, but there's no reason you couldn't still use them in your ep2 map(long as you own GMOD of course).

Jeff: It's okey if you can't finish. God will just hate you and so many kittens will just die, but no biggie... YOU BETTER NOT BAIL BITCH =P

Tetsu0: Awesome sir, the torches remind me of survivor/lost =P

Brendan: Stop being a pussy and make something! You don't have to map the world, one room will do(but of course feel free to map the world if that's what you're comfortable with) :)

Thanks! I'm not 100% sure where I want to go with it, but I want a lot of color. So that's the thing i'm shooting for right now. Here, have some purple.

The EP2 materials and models are surprisingly versatile.
I also plan on releasing the source files for everyone once I'm done with this.
