How do you carve? Kind of a stupid question but I don't know how to make it work right. It's supposed to cut out blocks from a bigger block right? Well simply clicking the carve button doesn't work so could someone tell me how to carve?
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-11 17:07:02 UTC Post #32474
all i've heard says carving is a bad way to get what you want... using the clip tool has less bad effects.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-11 17:55:40 UTC Post #32477
Take your little block in your big block, right click the little block and select carve.

Not recommended. Clip, or create individual brushes instead.

If it's just carving a box, I think it is ok to use Carve, but creating complicated shapes you should build up instead. This reason is that if you use the build up method, you get the same result if you carved a box.

Also make sure the little box is inside ro going through the big box in all the views. (top, side, bottom)

Carve is used so that you have 2 brushes. When they overlap, you select one of them, press the carve button, and it carves out of the other one.

Oh, and your big block and little block, your a big block, a big blockhead AHHAHAH HAHAHAAA hAA ahh... Thats not funney, sorry.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-11 19:14:05 UTC Post #32505
nothing wrong with carve. and i don't see what's "funnEy" about the big block little block comment. it's a perfectly legitimate way ofg sing the carve tool. it's just a little bit quicker than making a lame shape manually. personally i don't crave because i find it's quicker to make better shapes/structures manually. anyway...

Carving screws up texture alignment for the most part, and it's annoying to have to go back and fix your perfectly aligned textures.

Heyyy.. Peach and LOve, your not being very peacful and loving, making fun of my spelling... And when you do, use quotes, as so
way ofg sing the carve tool.
What does that mean?

As I said, it wasn't
funnEy
, I was just being stupid. It is a great way to describe it, although I have no Idea what you said next.
I don't use carve. It messes everything up, and makes way for those pesky leaks. It doesn't look nice either. For those reasons I use VM. Vertex Manipulation
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-11 19:34:45 UTC Post #32520
perhaps i was being clever; or didn't you think of that :/
and you'd have to be a real tool to get a leak using carve.

the carve tool and vertex manipluation are used for totally different things. you can't compare them. so don't be a noob dude.

Carving is the evil of all evils.... Make everything you need with vertex manipulation..it works out better in the end and helps you speed up in map design :)

I avoid carve as much as possible now. In my first map, I used carve, and it fuggered it with tons of leaks, and as a noob, i didnt know what was wrong! So I had to remake it from the stuff that was intact. If it can be done with carve, Vertext Manipulation or Clipping can do it better! :D
m0p m0pIllogical.

see Peace and LOve, people agree with me.

6th and MOP are not noobs, they are some of the best, and have been here a loooong time.

Yup carve can really screw up things. It can used, but it really shouldn't. Buliding the object out of seperate brushes and using the VM and clip tools are a better solution.

so i guess my original post kind of covered it eh

No they are not!

They are used for manipulating brushes into shapes typically other than cuboids!

Read the tutorials on VM. Don't carve.

(I also agree with BL)

"You can do everything with the vm tool" - yes, if you try hard enough - even texturing ;)

VM is hard to learn but it is worth the effort. You can create amazing objects with it.

I used carving at least once in my earlier maps, its not that bad, however i would not use it for everything that required to but cut or resructured.
Anyway, doesnt the early tutorials teach newbies when making their first room to use carve to make the start of a hall way or something simular? It has been put in hammer to be used, so its ok in using it. Just dont rely on it for everything. Use it only once or twice, no more than that.

try carving somthing with a cylinder :D It will really f**k up

I have tried that, stupid thing to do, nobody try that one!
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 08:49:59 UTC Post #32653
I suggest only use the "carve" tool for doors ways, if you have a hollowed block for a room. other wise stop being so lazy and make the dam thing yourself.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 10:20:58 UTC Post #32673
I use carve, but only because I'm too lazy to make 3 brushes for a doorway. I just put the door into the wall, streach it out, carve, and then make it 1 unit thick. BTW, what type of units does this use? is 1 unit like a centimeter or something?
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 11:43:56 UTC Post #32682
So wait, let me get this strait, if you have a big block, just a normal cube, And you get a cube half the size of the bigger one and put it IN the bigger one. Which do you select to activate the carve? Big or small?
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 11:46:02 UTC Post #32683
Ahhh! I got it! That's cool!
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 13:41:10 UTC Post #32708
There are no units - and if you're still using carve to make doorways you need a good kicking
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 13:52:57 UTC Post #32710
so don't be a noob dude.
lets see the stats here. peace and love totalling at 6 days as a member, while brattylord making an impressive 186 days. so tell me who the noob is?

Thanks Mini, and not too mention pretty much everyone else here agrees with me about the carve tool, exept about door as Kol has just pointed out.

P.S Pleeze don't kick me...
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 16:46:51 UTC Post #32771
Wait: I must confess I utilise the carve tool for the sole purpose of cutting windows in doors. After moving the door away from all the surrounding brushes. That and donning a chemical protection suit.

Whether someone carves or not, that's his decision.

Personally, I don't use it. As with hollowing, it gives me too less control over the process and the final result. Individual brushes aren't so much slower to create, and finally they grant me much more control over my map. But that's just me, you can discard it if you wish.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 18:12:13 UTC Post #32814
I think that, the more experinced or the more a perfectionist you become, the less you will be using the carve tool. Clipping and of course vertex manipulation a the number one tools, because the result is always exactly what you want.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-12 18:17:02 UTC Post #32816
another great habit of the noob is not to use snap to grid, but to immediately take it oof when mapping. messes up everything and creates leaks.

lol.

P, we are here to try and help people out of their noobish ways and to let them take a step up from the carve tool. The point of the Genreal mapping forum is to help people, not only noobs, with their mapping. It helps to tell them not to use carve, since it sucks.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-13 13:23:07 UTC Post #33024
OK, I don't use carving for dorrways and I'm not a noob, so back off anyone who thinks I cant map.

you can map. You can map cities.

Not since it sucks but since above stated reasons. Plus that when it's wrongly used it can create leaks or other problems/flaws. :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-13 15:32:27 UTC Post #33069
thats why it sucks. ITs not better than vm, the only way to go. carve is for new people who are learning and for time savers. also lazy people like me.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-14 22:06:41 UTC Post #33438
The example map includes the set of tubes used in this tutorial, which you can experiment with. Just remember: if you can do it with clip, carve, hollow etc., you can do it better with vertex manipulation!
oooooohhh...

by atom himself. saying that. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAAA!!!!!! I win.

What do you mean I can map cities. Is there some sort of problem here? Do you have some sort of issue with me and my love for city atmosperes? If there is a problem here then please let me know so I can beat it out of your pathetic MORTAL PEON BRAIN!!!!!!

No, thats basically it. Well, I bet I could make a pretty good winter map.
Desert maps though.... booooo. Hard to make and not very fun to play in.
