Been sinking my teeth into Monster Hunter World. I got into the Monster Hunter series several games ago, so I'm no stranger to their tendencies towards somewhat arcane, obscure or opaque systems. And as much as I enjoyed those games despite that (and I enjoyed them a whole lot), the ways in which World strips down just about every system from those games down to their core and rebuilt them into more sensible, enjoyable forms... World is really good. If the series has repelled you in the past, World seems like a really good opportunity to give it another try. And if you haven't tried them at all before, now is a good time!

I would love to get into Monster Hunter World, but there are two things that are putting me off getting it. First is the price of the game on Steam, and the other is justifying said price with the amount of time I will be able to invest it, especially with Fallout 76 on the horizon.

On the bright side, there's some really cool stuff coming out of new studios that fix what EA breaks. Two Point Hospital and Cities Skylines to name a couple. Maybe we'll see a new RTS series inspired by C&C when this one releases. Hahaha

Me again, bumping this thread. After a couple of goes on the Fallout 76 BETA, I have asked Bethesda for my money back. I was willing to look past the lack of everything that makes Fallout a good series (that hadn't already been stripped out with Fallout 4) and play it with an open mind. However, the PC port was a joke. Not a good one either. (What are the ideal keys to move left and right in a menu? Z and C! badum tish)

In light of that, I've started to pick up some of my older games that I've never finished or even tried in some cases. I've decided to dive into Guild Wars 2 which I downloaded over two years ago and never played. So far, I have to say that I'm enjoying it. While every other MMORPG I tried just felt like a WoW clone, (WoW being a game I got bored with after six months) GW2 seems to have a little more variety in it's quests and offers a branching personal story as well, away from any main questline. I reckon I'll stick with it for a bit until I get bored or something better comes out. Being Free to Play helps too.

Fallout 4 - Gone back to my first ever save from 10th of November, 2015. Playing with my first character again from scratch but with a heavily modded game with all DLC installed.

Fallout New Vegas - Because sometimes it's nice to actually play a GOOD Fallout game.

I've also sorted my Steam Library a little. It now consists of the following groups:

Favourites
My all time favourite games that I can pick up and play any time. Some completed. Some online. All installed. Ridiculous number of hours.
Notable games: Half-Life, Fallout New Vegas, Hollow Knight, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny

Completed
Games that I have played from start to finish or online titles that have exhausted their entertainment value. Uninstalled. A large number of hours.
Notable games: Mass Effect series, Max Payne series, DayZ

Fluff
Games that just appeared in my library (special editions/remasters) or are generally a bit shit but cannot be refunded. Uninstalled. Very few hours.
Notable games: Some moba knock-offs, games people thought I might like, extra crap from bundles with better games in?

Games
Games that I am currently working through or have not yet started. A mix of installed and not yet installed. Very few hours.
Notable games: Metal Gear Solid V, Tomb Raider, A Hat in Time, The Witcher 3

That's more or less how mine is set up. I've got:
  • Favourites: What I'm currently playing (or what I leave there optimistically in the vain hope that it will will me to play more of it, like NieR)
  • Backlog: What I want to play at some point in the future but am not currently playing due to lack of present interest or early access titles, etc.
  • Completed: Games that I feel I've gotten as much out of them as I'm going to, and am not likely to play again
  • Gldsrc/Source: A clustering of all those games so I don't have to hunt for them mid-stream every time
  • Gldsrc/Source Mods: As above, but custom mods
  • Local Multiplayer: All the games that I know have local multiplayer for when they are required
  • Meh: Games that I have no interest in, betas, or games that are rendered redundant by another game (Eg. Skyrim by the special edition)
  • Games: Everything else

I decided I'm going to start going through all the old PlayStation games I never played back in the day, and started with some Dino Crisis:

It's pretty good. If you like Resident Evil, it's that with raptors and a great big scary T-Rex. It changes up the formula here and there. Some of it works, some doesn't. Ammo's a lot more scarce, but there's a bevy of health items you can mix into all sorts of useful combinations, eventually working your way up to almighty one-shot poison darts. It's a shame this franchise kicked the bucket, it would have been amazing to see this get the same treatment as Resident Evil's (in my mind near-perfect) remake.

I went ahead and played it, and it's gooood. Reminds me of a Blood map in a lot of ways. I love all the new functions they've added to the weapons, and the new enemies. They can really shred you up on skill 3, so the extra firepower is very much appreciated. That minigun, oh baby.

I also finished playing the Resident Evil 2 remake, going Leon A/Claire B on hardcore mode, which puts ink ribbons back in and makes the supplies really damn scarce. I can't believe how good the game turned out. First time through I had to be super cautious with my ammo, and scour the place for anything that could help. The level design's better than the original, connecting up in ways it didn't before, which is just super when Mr. X is chasing you around the place. They've stripped out a few enemies, and turned one or two bosses into set-piecey encounters which kind of sucks. I'm not a fan of the new character interpretations, they feel like baby-faced cosplayers acting out some HBO drama, but the gameplay carries it the whole way. It won't replace it for me, but it does make a great companion piece to the original.

This game is titled Blade of Agony, a story-driven FPS. The project is inspired by WWII shooters from the 90's and early 2000's, like Wolfenstein 3D, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty, but with faster-paced gameplay in the spirit of Doom! The game can be played standalone using the GZDoom engine as a base (taken from the BoA website).

Graphics options are very extensive and you may need to spend some time configuring your preferred settings and whatnot.

Terminator: Future Shock

I can't say this is a great, but it feels pretty ambitious for 1995. One of the first true-3D games with mouse look, huge environments, and some surprisingly decent (and bloody hard) jeep and hunter-killer vehicle levels. But it's far from perfect, there's really sketchy player physics, making some of the jumping sections really tedious. It starts spawning massive, deadly enemies literally in your face, and it all starts getting a bit samey, but I enjoyed it. It's a fascinating oddity from the early 3D era.

I've been meaning to play this one for ages, because I've always loved the way it looked. It's cute as hell. The controls are a bit odd, coming before the PlayStation got Dual Analog sticks, and the combat's simplistic, but it's packed full of character and great moments. There's a vibrant overworld full of secret quests, and a big, interconnected, underground dungeon that unfolds a bit like a Metroidvania game. Just a really charming little adventure, I can't wait to check out the others.

I got "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons" years ago, but the two-handed keyboard control daunted me so much that I gave up in frustration.

Fast forward five years. My son is now 12, and he's so much more dexterous than I am (it helps that he's actually ambidextrous, writing with his right and eating with his left). I loaded up the game for him to play, and he mastered the control within minutes.

I got to experience the game vicariously through him. I joined him toward the second half of the game, controlling the Big Brother while he controlled the Little Brother. We shared one of the most memorable gaming experience together.

lol I'm not into superheroes either but was still able to find enjoyment in it, the characters are well written and voiced and the plot is simple enough that it's easy to grasp and kept me intrigued and genuinely interested in the fate of some of them. I thought I'd need to play the previous Arkham games but nope, It's all well explained in the game.

Besides Arkham Knight, I also pirated downloaded a PS2 Emulator and a Castlevania Lament of Innocence iso and now I'm going through it for the first time, the music is good and the combat is satisfying but I keep getting lost. I need to get used to using the map feature.

For my daily dose of Multiplayer stuff I play Rust, gmod and TF2.

Thought I'd share some shots from the Divinity Original Sin II campaign that Archie and I are working through.
December 31st, 2018December 31st, 2018
This was the end of our first play session after Archie picked up the game. I had owned the game since 2017, but in one session we got much further in the campaign than I ever had alone. The characters from left to right are:
  • Eichra, the Might Ba - Archie's original character created at the start of the game. At this point, his build was a hammer wielding metamorph barbarian who would transform enemies and herself as needed to turn the tides in battle.
  • Sebille - One of the origin characters available in the game, recruited by Archie earlier in the evening. A rogue who was dealing incredible crits, even at this early stage. She was also our designated thief at this point, picking locks and pockets alike.
  • Lohse - Another origin character from the game, recruited by myself. At this point she was a battlemage, using a combination of physical and magical attacks, excelling at neither. She was mainly used as cannon fodder and would die in most fights.
  • Spiggot McQuibble - My original character. A noble scholar way past his prime and fallen from grace. A crossbow wielding librarian with a few healing spells up his sleeves. Spent the early game in the thick of battles where he most certainly did not belong. He can also talk to animals, for better for worse...
  • Also pictured, Sir Lora the squirrel knight and his skeletal cat mount, Quercus. Both very much part of the physical world. He started following Spiggot at the start of the game and wouldn't go away.
July 28th, 2019July 28th, 2019
The same group, seven months later:
  • Eichra is now a summoner, often bringing a ten foot tall demon and a collection of totems into each fight. She traded in her hammer for a ridiculously large axe.
  • Sebille is less of a thief and more of a completely overpowered mofo. Archie picks a target for her and then that target dies very very quickly.
  • Lohse is a full on enchantress who heals the team and inconveniences enemies with disabling spells, including a hilarious ability to teleport anyone, anywhere.
  • Spigot is... largely the same, but with a bigger bow and far greater damage if given a high tower and clear line of sight.
  • Also, Sir Lora and Quercus are now very much a part of the spirit world after getting accidentally, if not violently successfully murdered by Eichra during a "friendly" arena battle...

Replaying Mirror's Edge Catalyst, best part of this game for me is the open world, the main story missions are very good but I often find myself getting sidetracked because I love the open world aspect more, reaching hidden or hard to reach spots and being rewarded chips, recordings, docs, runner kits....etc. a fun game for short bursts, whenever I get bored I start up the game and roam around the game's different locations and try to reach areas I haven't reached before. The parkour mechanics are very good in this game, and it's a gorgeous-looking game too, I must have taken like 50 screenshots or something but here's just a few. I always wanted to explore the first game's city and enjoy it's parkour mechanics more but the restricted linear levels didn't really allow me to do that and when Catalyst came out it felt like it was just what I wanted. The ambient music is very relaxing and helps make the exploration aspect even more enjoyable.

I feel like the story is the most underrated aspect of this game. set in a utopian / dystopian setting, it's about citizens willingly giving their freedom for status and wealth by connecting themselves to a massive network, unaware that their government is secretly plotting to launch a project to control their thoughts. small details like running next to windows and overhearing citizens worried about the project and their jobs really help making me geniunely interested in it.

It's pretty funky, but I'm really only into the (mostly) vanilla experience with Minecraft. I know that there's a ton of mods out there, but I can barely get my head around the existing stuff, and I like the blocky aesthetic.

Same with Bethesda RPGs and stuff really. I only really go for the low impact mods that fix glitches, improve the look slightly or include QOL changes. Nothing game changing.

Dunno why, considering how much I enjoy total conversions for GoldSRC and Source... but then I never liked things that change the base game for those either.
