Oh boy, we need to stop; no more tips and tricks... They're gonna iterate the core for the 500th freakin time.
So I saw this in the TWHL POCKETS thread and it made me laugh.

Is no secret that we've returned to some of our completed maps and altered them based on things that we've learned. Of course, that's a never ending cycle.

I have had to accept that WHEN the Core does come out, there will definitely be sections that I'm not completely happy with.

That applies to pretty much any project ever of any type.

Not sure if this is the truth...... or a trap for hype.

Truth.

It's getting to the point where I'm getting a load of new ideas for projects that I couldn't fit into The Core (not that I am looking to expand it any further, I'm all about finishing up what we have at this point.)

I've got an idea for a new mod I'd like to make and I've had the lore in my head for a few months. A whole new universe to play with, rather than using Valve's. Thing is, it will definitely need custom coding which means I would either need to learn myself or take on a coder to help me get things set up. Not something I am willing to even look into until The Core is out the door.

In all seriousness, glad to see you haven't abandoned the project and you are still working on it.

I wholeheartedly endorse you finishing The Core and moving to, if not a new engine (although...) then at least having the freedom to use whatever story, setting, and mechanics you want to.

Getting away from Valve's IPs is something I still haven't quite managed to do myself...

You have a chance to, for a brief shining moment, impress upon thousands of people. So few people have the possibility to do this and it is special. This project involves more than you and never forget that.

Finish it.

Well, I committed three updated maps to the repo last night and one new one. This will be the last map I create for The Core. Once this one is done, and linked to the next chapter, that's it. That's not the end of development, obviously, but no more new maps from me. Can't speak for Archie of course. :P

I do recall some 2 or 3 years ago Archie having said all of his maps were done and he was waiting on you.

Hm...

I'm beginning to shift into my late twenties and I'm so sad I've only now began to fully be aware of the fact that we're excellent planning and idea-generating machines but shit executioners. There are a plethora of reasons on my side(probably just human nature) but also because having a job steals so much time from the day from you that you absolutely must plan ahead to do stuff if you ever want something to be done. I imagine in your case, having a family and whatnot, it makes things even more complicated. I've imagined several projects I wanted to start and even a few I'm actively "working" on, and the failure to see progress is one of the biggest generators of depression for me.
But then I've had another revelation, but this one I'm coming slower to terms with. Perhaps everybody has a rhythm, and no matter how much you want to accomplish, you just can't do more than... you can. Accepting that can probably ease the anxiety.

Perhaps you've got a different rhythm Urby. Doesn't mean you're not gonna finish this, but the fact that you didn't is totally understandable.

but yeah you should finish it

You probably already created a lot of content for the mod, and, as I assume, its' quality is almost unbeatable. So the mod should be finished by any means, even if the work on some of its' planned parts should be discontinued . We are all waiting for something playable, even if not 100% completed. And this project is the great part of your life, don't let it remain in our memory only on screenshots.

Happy to see people still have faith in The Core. I do want to finish it to the best of my ability, otherwise I would have rushed something out in the last year or so to get it over the line. :P

It has gotten to the point where I have seriously considered pulling the plug, but I won't let myself do it and I'm pretty sure Archie would actually, literally come to my house and kick the shit out of me...

Don't make the same mistake as we did with Half-Rats: Parasomnia. Take the time you need to finish it and most importantly: have a lot of people playtest the shit out of it (different play styles, profiles...)
Posted 5 years ago2019-03-08 12:37:38 UTC Post #342187
Select your play testers carefully too. Also, pick those that can record there tests in case something breaks, you can see what they did. At least that’s a good tip for indie games, I don’t know about mods, I guess that’s up to you.

Gonna work the latest MapLabs competition brief into my last map for The Core.

Run, think, shoot, live. The four cornerstones of Half-Life gameplay. They don't accept GoldSrc entries, but I'm just using it as an excuse to get the map done. I won't be submitting it anywhere, but I will share screenshots here. Depending on whether I can be bothered, I may stream it.

Hooray The Core!!!

I also second moving to a new engine for new ideas :(...
I've been jamming on GldSrc stuff for the past few weeks (life got in way of Ascension entry)
Valve Killed Source - Even getting lightmaps working is a massive headache.
I've been loving working with Unity lately - lots of great features.

Mind that time we set a release date? What was I thinking?? Probably something like, "3D Realms aren't going to hire me in early 2021 and cause me to delay the mod indefinitely. That'd be crazy!"

That being said, we're making progress on this again now and I dare say that some of the new sections I've added or the old areas I've improved upon are pretty damn fun now. Just need to get this thing over the line now. Stay tuned!
