Is it just me or is mapping incredibly time consuming? Do people here draw their maps in paint or on paper or something before they map in hammer?

Some do. Every now and again I may sketch an idea on grid paper.

If some of you do draw your maps on paper beforehand, do you draw the whole map in 3d or some of the map in 2d & some in 3d?

I do a 2D birds eye view. Sometimes I do specific areas in other viewpoints.

Yeah, I had an idea of doing the whole map or parts of it in birds eye view & specific areas in other viewpoints as well.

Sketching and planning definately helps. Going into hammer with no idea of what ur map is going to look like is bound to lead to a lot of time thinking and a lot of time having to redo sections because you didnt plan it out before hand.

I do 2D layouts then 3D sketches of the complicated bits and entity and trigger flow charts and stuff aswell.

Yeah, I sometimes do the entity charts too. Makes it easier to see things...

I've tried using grid paper but it's virtually impossible. I tend to just map straight away, although I have made some maps using my original concepts on paper. And I agree, mapping can take a long time, specially when your a full time university student and you have all this work to do :(
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-25 14:02:58 UTC Post #36326
Hehe - all you need to do is strike a balance between planned layout and spontaneous moments of inspiration ;)

I should try doing stuff on paper. I reckon I'm technically competent, but I never seem to produce any awe-inspiring maps :

I write down my entity settings for each map in it's own little notepad. And sometimes draw out graphs of my work.
m0p m0pIllogical.

I wouldn't be arsed with that!

like for the machine compo, for each little machine that i make i first draw it in 3d view to kinda mess around with it and get ideas. top view is realy mainly needed for multiplayer maps or just large maps but 3d realy gives you ideas of how your small creations will actualy be in gameplay.

I don't plan maps. I get a slight idea for the map then I get more ideas as I go along.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-25 14:35:33 UTC Post #36355
Plain paper plan usually, with circles for monsters and weapons. I usually change bits of the final map, sometimes large chunks, but I do plan it.

Its a good idea to have an aim for your map.. where you want to start, end etc.. it helps

I once killed loads of my free time drawing up a guide for a DM map I was going to do. And, for the first time I was actually able to do it! Wehey! I named the map Nexus, and it was never released because it's over 2 mb and I don't have a site to which you could get it:

Hey you server owners out there.
Give this man some space, we all want to play this map!
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-26 08:47:20 UTC Post #36560
It can seem a little too dark though in places, but that kind of adds to the feel of the atmosphere. Also, it is very symetrical, I have a habit of doing DM maps this way, well mostly, but not always.

If you want i can host the map for you, but not the server ... my host will kill me if i do that :o

kol[at]iol[dot]ie - if its that big i'll let you upload by ftp to www.hlcore.uni.cc

I'll mirror the map if y'want. Not gunna press my ISP too much since I already run an FTP server and a webserver uploading a gig or two a day, heh.
