I'm a newbie to creating maps. But I made a simple room. It has no errors. But I can't test it because my half-life disk is too scratched! is there any way to test my map?

You don't need the HL cd to play HL. Only if you want to hear CD music.

how do i test a map then? Am i supposed to export it as something and put it in a maps folder?

You should read some tutorials before making a map. Go through all of the begginers tutorials. In this order:

Setup Guide: (WorldCraft/Hammer)
All of the "In the beggining" tutorials.
Compiling Introduced
How do I run a HL map (.bsp file)

All of these tutorials can be found here!

Get Steam, too, as all WON servers die at the end of the month.

No, they are shutting them down permanenetly. They have been trying to phase them out ever since Steam was released.

Have you compiled the map? You gotta compile it then run it from the console.

Didn't you read the tutorials I recommended?

type in the console:

map test

It's pretty easy.

Make sure it's in valvemaps or cstrikemaps. I know CS used to have a maps folder in just the Counter-Strike folder, that's not where they go.

If it still cant find the map, check for errors in Hammer (alt-P) and in the compile log.

I did read some tutorials. but steam makes things more difficult because it doesn't detect my map even when i went " map test ". im really confused now.

Did anyone consider that if his version of HL wasn't patched, then he might need it in to run HL??
Do you have the latest HL (non Steam) Patch installed?
Sorry, I can't remember the number but I think it is v46 HL 1.1.1.0
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-29 00:35:23 UTC Post #46214
Yes, version 1.1.1.0 is the most recent, and final WON Half-life build.

Before I patched my version of HL retail, I could still run custom maps, though, so I don't think that would be the problem.

As for maps not showing up in the list, deathmatch maps require the entity 'game_player_deathmatch', otherwise they're filtered out from the list. This is to prevent single-player maps from getting on the deathmatch list... :)

Generally, testing goes easier from the console instead of having to start a LAN game each time.

If it just says 'Cannot find map 'test" in the console, you might have had a compile error. Check for a file called test.log where you compiled the map and post the contents here, that can help us figure out the problem.

You also might've setup Hammer incorrectly. Take a look at your settings (post them here if nessecary).

thats exactly what i thought as soon as i saw that.

Ok, well next time you see something you know the answer to... answer it.
Posting that you thought you knew the answer is a bit pointless and I will delete comments like this in future

I have a problems compiling maps to steam's map folder. Compile the maps elsewhere and move them into the steam folder as the compiler doesn't recognise the @ in the email address and saves the bsp as email@address.com.bsp. So compile elsewhere then move to the maps folder.
