The general mapping questions section has 50 pages and 2000 something threads. I was just thinking that the inneffable wisdom contained therein could be condensed into one big FAQ (basically the questions and answers WITHOUT the spamming and flaming). I suppose it'd take a while but It'd be a good addition to the site and save the same question being asked repeatly (ok, so lazy noobs probably still would ask!) in new threads. What do you think?

About 95% of the questions asked in there are already answered in the tutorials section.
I doubt that people who don't read tutorialy will look at a faq before posting a new thread.

Then write one and ask Andy. If he likes it too, then it might get a link on TWHL.

Would anyone from TWHL be so kind as to send me the whole forums (my crappy 56k would take a thousand years to go in and out of all the threads) then? I'll do the donkey work.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-10 07:04:22 UTC Post #49589
That seems to be part of the donkey work, isn't it?

But aren't there so-called retrieval programs? I've heard about NetAttach?, Teleport Pro, and wget... Not that I'm known with these programs but maybe they're usefull here?

And about the FAQ... go ahead, but most is already covered. If not on this site, then on others. And those that really investigate before asking would search around a few more sites than this one only...

I dont know about retrieval programs and php (but then i dont know much ABOUT retrieval programs!) I'll dload one tonight. As for people searching elsewhere, TWHL comes up first most times. Right I'll give it a shot anyways. (this should really have went in site comments suggestions, I hate threads in the wrong place...oh well)

It totally depends on how and were you search.

I started at the VERC, truly a helpfull site when I got started and still interesting after some years. Then I got in touch with The Snarkpit, Handy Vandal's, 69th Vlatitude, Wavelenght, TWHL... People don't only find things on Google, you know... ;)

I did :(

I know that this is further down the line, but I was wondering about permissions: I could obviously paraphrase the person asking the question but I'd like to get the permissions of all contributors, some of whom are no longer here.

Would that involve forwarding my intentions or since the forum is in TWHL is that covered under atom/andy?

Wouldn't it be easier to collate frequently heard questions from the regulars?

HOW? If I email em theyd get pissed off at me torturing them, its hard to find ANYONE on IRC, and if I post a thread itll get spammed for sure!
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-10 13:50:27 UTC Post #49779
Forum it. I'll make sure it doesn't get spammed. Warn that it'll be heavily modded and I'll do so.
