When people release a MOD do they usually do so for money? I got USS Darkstar and They Hunger (both by Neil Manke) off of some cd's with nothing but free demos and stuff on them. If I made a mod would there be anyway I could make some money from it? Not that not making any money would keep me from making the mod but file planet costs money to download stuff and I thought if I gave it to them there might be a little something in it for me?

Most mod creators don't work for money. Natural Selection, The Specialists, SI, SC, you name it, were made for the mod community in mind and not for money. However, Counter-Strike started off as a mod without money in mind as well, and was purchased by VALVe.

What I'm trying to say is that mod teams don't work for money, but if your mod is of excellent quality (ie CS quality) and is very popular, it may be considered for purchase by a publisher/dev such as VALVe.

To answer your question about FilePlanet, they won't pay you if your mod gets hosted by them, afaik. It's a rather silly system, Gamespy.

Yes, Gamespy sucks.

GameSpot is a good site. Do they give money?

No, afaik, none of those big-name gaming sites give money if they host your download.

u CAN get mony from mods, but vary slowly :(. make a site, put your mod their. get sponsers (those guys that make u put baners on your site and pay u whenever some1 clicks on it) and you'll be making kiddi mony in no time :)

Then it's not necessarily making money from the mod itself, and most of those things are scams and annoy the heck out of all viewers of the site.

If mod making was about cash then everyone would be making one. Well why should gamespy pay u for you to use their services? It really should be the other way around IMO.
This seems like a good place to say that I don't see why counter-strike is so extrodinary. Yes the model's and things are good looking but it really doesn't show much more than that. The only coding was for some new guns, and possibly the team / player selection.

course thats not to say I don't like counter-strike lol

The weapon purchase system was extremely successful and very innovative in the mod scene.

At the time (long ago) it probably was very groundbreaking in terms of models, though now, if I was VALVe, I'd license Natural-Selection.

...which is why Gamespy and all those high-speed download sites for pay are a joke. They make money off of other people's work, and the creators don't get a portion of the profits, no matter how large or small.

Whats a third party game?
Because The specialists is a third party game along with sven co-op.

All unofficial mods are considered third party games. Official mods like Counter-Strike and Gearbox are second party, and first party is anything by VALVe.

If I had to pay for a mod I wouldn't get it. Most people make mods for the love of making mods.
