I am going to post the same on the Steam forums, but I wanted to know what to do from people here as well.

Ok, here's what happened;

From longing to play NS once more, I managed to get another CD-Key from the store where I bought my HL:Platinum Pack, since Steam said my last one was in use. (Yes I know I'm weak, but I can't resist the temptation of playing NS)

So now, I've got Steam downloaded and everything set to go. I click on the "Browse Games" button, go to "Register a product a I already own".

Once more, I'm faced with the vile "Enter your CD-Key" screen I've despised so much. I enter my CD-Key.

Everything goes fine, to my surprise! Now I shouldn't have gotten excited 'cause here comes the bad part. (And also because it's Steam)

Alright, CD-Key entered and registering completed, it gives me this:

"Steam is unable to complete your transaction, due to the servers being too busy, we will get to you as soon as possible once your subsciption is complete.

Meanwhile, you can play Half-Life: Platinum Pack.
"

Or something like that.

Releaved, due to the fact that I finally get to play in Steam (shudder), I procceed onto the next screen.
It asks me what games I want added to the "My Games" list, so I select and proceed further.

As soon as I get to the next screen an error pops up saying-

"Your download cannot start because the servers are too busy, please try again in a few minutes"

-and it quits to the main Steam screen.

Awestruck at the stupidity of the moment I go to check my games list and it was just like before! No games, no nothing!

In panic that the games should appear later in the list I tried joining a server but it pops me back to the browse games window, as If I never made a subscription!

My question is "WTF JUST HAPPENED!!?" :x :x :x :x

Well, I didnt really read all that, but download the NS installer from their website instead of using STEAM to it.

Any other ideas, anyone?

Um, try later? Steam's servers experience lots of use, and they get overfilled sometimes.

Have you recently tried re-downloading? Or, install WON and just install game, and it'll convert the WON files into a GCF file for Steam.

Oh and I have Half-Life installed, do I have to install them all?
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-23 01:51:30 UTC Post #53067
It saves you most of the download time if everything is already installed. .

You see, another reason why Steam is a pile of elephant dung.

Too true.

Can someone still help?

Well, NS should be installed to SteamAppsHalf-Life, right?

Yes. The new NS installers search for your SteamAppsHalf-Life folder automatically, though.

It doesn't show the games in my games? That's odd. Try a Steam reinstall?

You see, when Steam came along they fcked up all the halflife directories. Why wasnt Steam installed in the Sierra folder rather than in Program Folders. I have now got two copies of half-life; one is installed in the steam email directory so that hl online works, and one is installed in the self-named Steam folder (Jahzel) so that Hammer will work!

That means ever since I had Steam, I am caining my disk space! I just think the whole system is preposterous!

if you cant add anything to this threat then stop breakign steam down

So I guess I have to make yet another install of Half-Life inside the Steam folder, huh?

And yes Rabid, I did try reinstalling Steam.

You shouldn't [have to] install WON HL at all for Steam to work. Shouldn't.

Jazhel: use SUBST and Winbolic Link (latter NTFS only) and possibly FSUTIL.

Try uninstalling and re-installing Steam in its entirety, reinstalling it, then use the NS installers and point them to SteamAppsblah@blah.comhalf-life.

Will that not cause the screwed up account/cd-key effect we all know and love?

I wouldn't uninstall Steam, it will probably mess something or other up. Such is the mentality of Steam.
