Suggestion: run Half-Life in OpenGL mode, not in software mode.

As for the screens, the level-design looks bland but you're improving. The walls really need more detail and texture usage is very repetetive. Lighting is better although some more variation would be good.

As for the models, you've got them from several other mods, right? The MP5 reminds me of the one used in that German mod (how was it called?). That shotgun is from Team Fortress, right? The last weapon I do not recognize though...
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-06 18:01:24 UTC Post #48534
they shouldn't be, they were made from scratch. *oh there i go again telling you things when i was supposed to keep my lips sealed! :) *

hmm... the walls do look plain though, maybe i should add some cracks etc. but there is alot of detail in areas you don't see in the screenshots.

like cracked pipes, broken walls , oh... there i go again with the telling.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-06 18:06:38 UTC Post #48536
Then take screenshots of the detailed area's. After all, you want us to be impressed, right? If I were you I would show the best pieces of my map...

And these models, self-made? Nice work then...
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-06 18:10:15 UTC Post #48538
no, i'm afraid not self made. I gave credit to the people who were involved and helped. :)

in the intro titles.

Ah, ok. I already thought...

Still, you should take better screenshots. This doesn't really convince me of the quality of your mod.
Presentation, that's what it's all about here... and you may want to give a good first impression...

the mod is coming along very well.

The mod will mostly be a new experience in models and skins.
NEW MODELS:
-Replaced the ol' headcrabbed zombie with a nice zombied barney. (no headcrab included)
-There will be NO!! headcrabs in this mod.
-These are the new weapon models i have so far:
New mp5, shotgun, glock, crowbar.
-The crowbar is now a Hatchet.
-Gordon will probably reskinned to look like another person.
-Grunts have been replaced with nice h.e.v. suit workers.
-Scientists are going to be replaced with civilians.

custom meaning by me... no.

and, VOX, i'll put the Hatchet dll on my site you'll just have to wait a couple mins tho. I'm not putting any other models on my site. (it'll spoil the mod!)

I still haven't come up with a name for it, i was thinking "The Zombies" but i thought that sounded too corney.

anyway, here's the story:

"[i]You Are Gordon Freeman, you get a job as a scientist in an underground facility called Red Mesa, you soon find out that you are working on a project called the Z-Virus, you find out that if this virus is inhaled, it will turn the dead and the living to a limbo-like state, where all the want to do is eat and by eat we mean 'eat brains and organs' thus, one day you accidentally drop this Z-Virus, and it get's sucked through the vents, you quickly try to escape but, the exits are blocked and everyone is turning into mindless zombies!"

any body got a name?

The texturing for the walls is terrible. You really cannot get around that. Misaligned, repetative, boring. I suggest you add some structure. Support colums along the sides of the walls, more pipes and maybe some steam on the ceiling.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-07 16:12:11 UTC Post #48799
what?... i did the mapping!!
the modelling and skinning is done by other people!
that's it!!

I AM THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS THE .RMF AND .MAP!!, NOBODY ELSE CAN PUBLISH THIS EXCEPT ME!!

Floater619 I believe you. But keep in mind that a "mod" is a team of people who get together and make the maps, models, code all by themselves. It is possible to make a mod by yourself, but that is just if you make everything. I have yet to see a mod that used models that freelance modelers created. It's ok to use the models, but it's just frowned upon.

Did you ask the creators for their permission? Or are you just crediting them?
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-07 20:45:25 UTC Post #48842
name: half-evil.

ummm, your screenys are nice.. although to make your mapps feel more detailed try using a wider array of textures... rather than using that same one on the walls and ceiling try adding say a band around the middle of the room and make the upper half of the wall differant or somthing like that and make the ceiling a slitly differant texture. also try experimenting with lighting... lighting can make a huge differance to the feeling of your maps... especially spot lighting in tight areas... so as to give intense shaddows...

ENOUGH with the software mode, its horrable change it to open GL already.

Floater, I recommend you work on ONE thing at a time. What happened to your spaceship mod? And now this mod? Work on one thing at a time and take your time on it. The map I am currently working on has taken a week just for a corridor and a room, because I wanted the details and lighting to be just right.

The screenies do like quite nice, although I am not sure how nice they would look if they didnt have the custom models in there. The screenies are a bit bland though. IMO i think you need to focus more on lighting, texturing and architecture.

Lighting
Make it dark, not too dark, but dark enough to be able to scare the player. You can hide the zombies in the shadows and make them pop out of nowhere when the player least expects it. Good Lighting = Good atmosphere, and atmosphere can cause horror. I recommend you read BL's horror tutorial.

Texturing
The texturing is way too boring. They aren't properly aligned, and it is very very repetitive. You might be able to get away with it if your lighting is just right, because the player will be caught in the atmosphere and would almost not notice the textures.

Architecture
Needs MAJOR work. Very very bland, and the ceiling has no supports. I think old rusty pillar type things would look nice, and would also leave a nice hiding spot for a zombie. I think you need to add railing type things on the roof (texture = {TENSION5). Pipes on the roof would also go quite well, and maybe some rusty old vents. Floor detail would also come out well. Make the walls more interesting, as they are just blocks right now. Maybe clip them into 3 or 4 different brushes and then use Vertex Manipulation to make them interesting, read the hallways tutorials if you need help with VM.

I really hope you consider my critisism, because this work is the most promising I've seen from you.

Good luck. :)

That gordon model is from HLPS2. I'll gladly send anyone the model if you doubt me.

Err, did anyone ever play Todesangst? The hatchet model is used in it...

And have you asked the permission of the model creators to use their models? Crediting them is all well and good, but it's often much more effective to contact them, show them work, and if they like it they'll often allow you to use the models. I've seen more than a few get very irked at the presence of their models in other situations when the author has not asked permission, even if credit is given. Just a recommendation that will earn you much more respect with modelers and such. This is why HIT requires membership to post and download, in an attempt to stop people from using modelers' work without their permission in their mods and such.

Your screenshots show vast improvement over other maps. However, as many others have said, the texturing is repetitive. Since it looks, at a first glance, like the r_speeds are not too high, maybe a look at this piece of work, similarily themed, can give you some ideas on how to detail those silo textures :) .

Best of luck as well.

Looking ok floater. But the textures are repetetive and misaligned. Architecture is OK, but not too great. Lighting is ok as well. It looks very promising. Good luck!

There, I have given you some nice feedback. :)

The lighting is unresolved, so too is the texture alignment in places. But overall, you're doing a good job for an fairly new mapper! You know what they say, "practice makes perfect." ;)

I wont be bothered with reading all that,
For the screenies:

They are extremely undetailed and boring. I mean, the same texture everywhere just doesnt give the right feel.
And Detail doesnt mean cylinders here and there that are supposed to be pipes - it actually has to look good.

For the models, make sure you credit the authors.

12mb for a single map :o

as for the zombiew, they dont look right with the rip in them, make them without that and just bloodstained.
