Looks interesting.

Nice new properties box it looks like, and a thing to play model anims and keyframe some how, and notice those model groups...depot model, laundry model, barricade. It also looks like info_nodes are now called 'Hints' or something of that sort.

Also, a new VMF map format.

is it carve?

Hollow or Carve, it appears. I hope it's not the latter...

You know the 'amimation' thing, could that mean that you will now be able to 'animate' world brushes or models in hammer?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-04 08:37:03 UTC Post #56470
I dunno, it could actually be for scripted_sequences and testing them.

Posted 20 years ago2004-09-04 08:41:16 UTC Post #56473
Even still, that would be great to be able to plan the sequences in hammer

i thought you could see the lighting in the new hammer?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-04 08:47:38 UTC Post #56479
Maybe that's an option, I dunno.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-04 09:25:27 UTC Post #56481
That would be sweet. You dont even have to play the game to get full enjoyment. Just grab a shotgun and play it while you map it. :P

The reason I say 'can you animate world brushes?' is because a while ago I read in this article that 'you'd be able to make rock monsters made out of world brushes as enemies' (rock being like boulders) I remembered this and I thought it sounded too good to be true.

Yes, the HL2 Hammer has in-editor light preview options.

I saw that pic in my GameStar magazine. It's included in the SDK, along with a facial animation editor!

Yes, I have the real hammer 4.0.
But since we're not supposed to discuss warez or pirated software im not going into that.

Now, Hammer4 is just like normal hammer - I havent experimented much with it, but its basically the same.
You can split faces and still not touch the brush, like in that screenshot, I have no idea how that works though.

a) Info_player_start, item_suit, func_Door_rotating, trigger_multiple, infodecal, a Coke machine prefab (very cool), weapon_alyxgun (no model or animations), npc_citizen, light, info_node.
Just testing triggers, lights, etc.

b) two npc_antlions, lots of info_nodes, func_rotating, lights, monster_fastzombie.
Testing the npcs and how they fight eachother. The npc_citizens were idiots.

c) Pretty much the same, only you can see the in-hammer models.

d) In-game screenshots of the antlions and citizens and the zombie fighting.

Hey zombie can you inlarge those images, its hard to see some of the stuff. I actually have to say I am kinda dissapointed... Theres only like one or two new / different features from what I see. I was really hoping they could lighting that showed up in the 3D view, but that was based of nothing so it isnt that big of a suprise.

I think this'll be possible.

Light preview does exist. I Just didnt got it to work.
For light preview to work, you need a compiled .bsp that "tells" hammer how the lighting should be - but hammer just crashed when I tried :(

Compiling was very fast, and pretty stable, ofcourse I only tried with a small map, but still.
The lighting and graphics pretty much dissapointed me as they looked worse than HL1 :P But im sure you'll have to learn how to master them.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-05 07:52:22 UTC Post #56653
SO its gonna be a lot harder to use the new features...

Maybe so, but at least it wont be as hard as UnrealED or QERadiant
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-05 09:47:17 UTC Post #56689
that image is about 1.5 years old, there must be a newer hammer i geuss
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-05 12:11:15 UTC Post #56701
OMG, UnrealED and QERadaint are so hard to use, I thought, "Hey, I am preety good with hl mapping so this shouldnt be that bad!" Well... I felt like a little kid lost who lost their parents at the Super-K.

@Zombie: About the light previewing, I am kinda confused. Does it just show the lighting that you already have, or if you add new lights will it show them too(after doing the bsp thing)? When you say lighting and graphics dissapointed you, do you mean you actually have HL2 so that you can run your maps?!
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-05 12:23:02 UTC Post #56704
I hate UnrealEd. I did however manage to get the idea of it and actually make a simple '8' shaped dm map, bit not fully understanding it. It uses a stupid carve system where the whole void is one brush or something and you carve out the room spaces etc. You do have a nifty brush-clipper-tool thingy where you can manipulate the shape of the brush and then you can make really complxe hallways and curved hallways etc. Thats about all I learned. I hate it. And QERadiant, well, thats just stupid.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-05 12:52:01 UTC Post #56705
That's called Solid-World Geometry.

It's very hard to get leaks with a system like that.

It's the bloody anon-hl2 leak - you can find it anywhere if you can be bothered.
It lays about 1.5 gigs to be prepared for a night of hard dling.
