Just post ideas and/or deatails that would make a good level, all suggestions don't need to work with each other (such as a computer in an outside level). Make as big of a list as possible and if you can put screenshots in it to.
P.S. I don't know if you can reply with screenshots.

Here is what i have so far:
Level Ideas:
Giant Level/ Small Player
Office
Boot camp
House
Space Station
Xen
Armory
Pre-Disaster

Details:
Use Cylinder for Corner and Clip it to make it Fit
Round Corners
Bunker
Trucks or Car
Treasure Chest to Fit Ammo and/or Player
Laser Fence
Bridge to Walk Across
Tower
Armory
Elevator

You can do the laser fence with sprites, and add a func_hurt, but i do beleive this post is called spam, do correct me if im wronge
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 00:30:15 UTC Post #58399
Even if it is spam it helps me make maps...
but this list is supposed to be ideas, not tutorials or how to make them, here you are supposed to make a list like mine but make sure it doesn't have any ideas that I have already posted. This is just a list that people can look at for ideas, like the laser fence (when they read the ideas they would then read what to put in thier maps and mods). JUST A LIST OF IDEAS. It is NOT what i want to know how to make, BUT just something to read for ideas.
P.S. Did i get my point through, and if this reply sounds mean or angry, I am not I just try to get a point across soo everyone gets the idea of this list.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 00:37:34 UTC Post #58403
So just list ideas not explain how to make them unless they are complicated.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 00:41:06 UTC Post #58406
what be good... i made a map once wer' i was in a car that was moving around with a Gun mounted on top...obvisouly i'm standing in the car roof hatch with the gun and shooting things while the cars driving.

(( with some story or something ))

it always gets players dragged in.

PS : make the turns look good and stuff cause mine looked shit and after every turn the car made on my map it nearly made me cross eyed so watch how ya make it.

the only people bitching about spam is you. this isnt considered spam because 1. its giving ideas for mapping
2. its in the "stuff" forum, and just look at how random and pointless some of the other threads in here are.

Damn you mini i was just gonna point that out, u just beat me, by like an hour. :D

Isn't it much better to learn how to get idea's instead of, well, asking others? Not that that would harm you, still...

I'd say you go and play some of the latest games, watch some movies, read some books, take a stroll outside, and so on. You can get idea's from virtually anything... Just, don't limit yourself to a specific area. Things don't have to be Black Mesa everywhere. Think outside the box and you'll see there's a whole new world outside it...
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 08:08:10 UTC Post #58477
I like thinking inside the box, the box is there for a reason, to be thought within! :P

The point of this list is to help people with mapper's block (if there is such a thing).

The point of this list is to help people with mapper's block (if there is such a thing).
Yes, there definitely exists something like a 'designers block'. Best is to just relax, delay the map for a while. Start with something different, just don't let yourself get stressed. After all, you're not forced to finish a map, even though that may seem the case so often.

It often happens people have an idea and start mapping on that immediatly. In most cases, I have horribly failed with this method. Now, I draw out my idea's and start to think of what else could I add. To me, this is really helpfull. It also helps me structure my work process better. Then again, maybe you're different and this doesn't work for you, but perhaps it's worth a try, to draw not only the idea but also a possible layout, and see, on paper, how it could play.
Most professionals work by this way. Maybe it doesn't work immediatly, I didn't do it when I just started but I've grown into it.

Perhaps this can help you? I hope so... :)

btw sry about the spam thing, didn't mean it :D

Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 17:37:51 UTC Post #58669
What exactly do you mean by spamming, besides the fact the people went off topic? For this forum anything taht helps detail a level or help think of a level theme is great to add on th the list.

I am not him, but it doesn't mean you can't post ideas...

Bravo, i can see that took a lot of thought and dedication to come up with your "l337" language.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 18:12:08 UTC Post #58706
YES! THAT'S WHAT THIS LIST IS FOR, A LIST! GREAT JOB.
Sorry if that sounds annoyingly nice, but that small list is what I am looking for.
Now if only everyone else came up with ideas and posted them here...
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 18:16:58 UTC Post #58712
I don't actually understand this thread, do explain?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 18:20:38 UTC Post #58720
List ideas for a level theme or details to put in them.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 18:24:53 UTC Post #58724
Well, im not gonna bother reading all that shit thats up there but:
  • Curved corners
  • arches, arches, arches
  • Ambient sounds
  • Custom textures (detail!)
  • Varying enviroments
  • a "curved" kind of sence - bend the walls etc (err)
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 18:29:23 UTC Post #58731
omg gheys!
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 18:30:55 UTC Post #58734
I like using curved corners, they are easy to make and look damn stylish.

Anonymous the sky on the floor wouldn't work, because you would fall thrugh it if im correct.

Good, I think you people are on the right track to make this forum useful!

But it doesn't mean stop posting here!
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 21:07:02 UTC Post #58776
Anyone that wants to can post thier ideas, even if it is only one theme or idea or prefabs or anything to do with mapping.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 21:25:27 UTC Post #58784
Please Continue this forum, because this forum could help anyone at anytime to make maps from these ideas.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 22:15:06 UTC Post #58802
Someone could make a multiplayer map where the level is inside a train and players are able to be inside and ontop of the train, and the level around the train moves and whenever a play joins that player sees the train arrive at the station so they can get on and noone can get off the train, and then starts moving again untill another player joins.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-12 23:04:46 UTC Post #58806
Hm, that's an interesting idea. It'd take some complex entity work to get the train to stop at the station whenever someone arrives though.

Why not attempt it yourself...?

I am very sad that no one is responding.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-13 00:44:05 UTC Post #58819
Well, you can't expect everyone to respond instantly.

I have ideas, though I'd prefer to keep them to myself, or within my mod teams.

What I do if I'm stuck is stop mapping. I'll take hour, day, week-long breaks from Mapping if I'm stuck. This allows me to concentrate more on my surroundings and then I can draw ideas from them.

I also keep a little folder in my desk of level plans. I'll hack away at layouts if I'm on the bus, lunch break, etc...whenever I've got a few free minutes. If I get stuck, I can refer to my plans and change them to the situation I need to create a map for.

So take a break from mapping, relax, just do other things and you'll come up with a few ideas.

-space shuttle launch, where you travel up the tower and get inside the frickin' shuttle, and then launch up to a space station, and then have zaniness ensue and stuff.

-make a map in all monocrome textures so it's like your trapped in a gameboy game.

-do a county fair map or carnival

-voltron map

-takes place on a battleship like that movie with steven segal

-do an aliens 2 map where you start in the ship and then take the dropship down and then get killed by the aliens

-make a map that occurs in a burning building

transformers mod then you could be optimus prime and shoot laser beams at the decepticons and you could have a bumblebee model too. the decepticons would be hard because sometimes they fly.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-13 02:05:05 UTC Post #58833
pirate ship yo ho ho
carnival
space shuttle and launch
transformers mod
aliens 2 on the ship with the dropship
inside the human body like innerspace

make a map with so many details and entitys and complex brushes and crap that it will never, ever compile.

Good one. I do this already with scrap files, images about specific level theme's that I'm scavenging Google for, but layouts would be good too.

Not to forget my sketches... ;)

Which way do people map: entities to suit environment, or build an environment to suit entities? I prefer the latter.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-13 08:54:00 UTC Post #58922
Former.
