Hey, Ho! I started another map, this time i want to make a forest map! I want to make lower part from brushes, like pipes, only other texture ;) and upper part (yeah, the green thingies, leaves?) frin sorites. The questin is:
Is it going to be laggy? i want to have many trees, not only "tree walls".

PS: I won't be able to reply to anything for around 2/3 days :| (no comp :/ i'm going... OUTDORS! For 2 days. I hope i will survive natural light and this nasty freshy air[too many oxygen]) please be patient ;)

Check the tutorial on trees to figure out the least laggy type.

Well, creating a real "forest" in half-life, with actual trees and ... stuff, would be pretty much impossible. HL is a 6 year old engine, it cnat render that much at the same time.

If you plan to make this map then forewarn people to switch to software mode or something first. But zombie, a forst actually is very possible. I know not many of you play cs but there is a map called de_predator thats a forest, and it looks really good too. The tree bases aren't that great but the maps got the light shining through the leaves and everything.

WCD: software? What?

Software mode must die.

It has an artificial limit of 800 polygons, does not use your 3D-cards acceleration, does not allow model transparancies and messes up with the models skin on several occasions.

Trees... old tutorial, really. Nowadays we can use models for trees since Half-Life now supports masked model textures. But then again, you can always use several methods: sprites for unreachable trees far-away (FarCry's did this but was controlled by dynamic LOD), models for the other trees. And perhaps 'tree walls' on the horizon.
I'd say you should experiment with this and perhaps test the map on several machines to see on what system specs it's still ok.

I mean... when you want to play games nowadays, you're really going to need a decent 3D-card...

cs_bikini by 3d-mike used sprites for trees close up and the looked pretty good. anybody know exactly how he did that?

Locking a sprites axis probably? There's a tutorial on that on the VERC, written by Hazardous!. Definitely worth a look.

Im saying it looks like a forest because the trees have the "leave light". I already aid something about the trees, or I think I did, if I didn't I meant to. But if you're making a map with huge r_speeds what can you do? OpenGL won't be able to cut it, you'll need to move to something faster.

Software sure as hell wont cut it either.

Erm, what on earth gave you the idea that software rendering was faster? :zonked:

Peace and Love, you are without a doubt one the most unenthusiastic, user hating, annoying people I have ever seen. And software runs faster and that's that. You people and your incredible computers dont ever see a difference but i do.

Then you should really consider getting a new video card. They aren't that expensive...

I really should get a new video card. My Nvidia Vanta 16MB just won't cut it anymore.

Definitely not for HL2. Something like a cheap GeForce FX 5200 like I have can run the VST of CS:S at 45fps @ 800x600...looks great.

And software runs faster and that's that.
Am I allowed to laugh? When you don't have a 3D-card, or a very old one, it's probably faster. But nowadays we have raw power in our GPU's so to state 'software runs faster' is nonsense. Software mode is significantly slower compared to OpenGL when you have a decent video card. So it's not OpenGL that's slow, it's your card that's slow...

Get a decent 3D-card when you want to continue level-design, or at least do some research before stating things like that...

hey Worldcraft Dude, are you Coolfat by any chance?
And to say I am unenthusiastic and "one of the most user hating, annoying people I have ever seen" just goes to prove that your ass truly does function as your brain.

I suggest you read the A4 sized post I made giving the guy suggestions on how to create his forest level, and how to do it properly, without running his game in sofware mode, which looks/plays/runs liek sh*t, so before I get really pissed off (I'm trying to hold back, really, I am) you should stop talking utter bollox and let people like the monkey's and CP teach you (and others) something useful, instead of you just waffling on about a subject you have absolutely no knowledge on, and before you start bullsh*tting about how you've done this and that for this MOD and how Gabe Newell personally asks you for advice on CS:S, you will realise that if you were the intelligent individual you claim to be, you would know that software mode is not what the game is meant to be played in. It's for emergencies, testing, and such. I play in 1024x768 on a GForce2, I get 30 fps max (60 if i face a corner), and I refuse to play in anything less, because you gotta do what you can to make a 6 year old game look any good.

Ok, so I went off teh beaten track with that one a little, but my point is simple:

Shut the F*ck Up

Damn, I thought your nick change was supposed to get people to respect you Worldcraft Dude! :P

While I find the idea of 2 people arguing so aggresively about which is faster bloody hilarious, dont kill this rather useful thread by flaming over such a ridiculousness. :P

Hmmm, maybe I will get a new video card. And maybe I won't because I can't because my awesome e-machines has integrated graphics. No Peace, I'm not Coolfat3459, so you dont have to say every map I release is crap before viewing it. Mephs, Peace hates everyone.

Peace and i-hope-everyone-dies-of-butt-fungus, I'd like you to never say crap about my maps again because I don't see you making any 4 star maps where as I have a four star AND a 5 star map.

Just noticed your comment, I'm at work so I can't test the download (security reasons), but ask zombieloffe, he is the host.
you can download that map from abotu 20 different servers if you have the time, simply search in steam..

Yeah, and that's just from here, I posted in about 5 forums with that map, I'd be interested to see just how many people have that on their machines. Nice to leave CS with a little memento, even if it is a shitty map.

PS: if you are interested in this topic, ignore the last 33 posts... lol
