All right, I won't brag but I must admit: I knew my horror map would do good. On to business-

Seems like a lot of people were having problems with the maps sounds. Most likley a sound overload as there are about 25 sounds going on at once (not always hearable but they are turned on). This obviously posed a problem as the sounds are one of the more scarier aspects of the map (listen to them from their file if you didn't get to hear them ingame). The overload of zombies also obviously caused some dullness and the ending wasn't what I planned it to be either so here's what I'm going to do:

I've still got some good ideas to make this map even scarier that before which means more room with who knows what waiting for you in them, without you expecting a zombie around every corner. I'll spice up the lighting a bit and tone down the sounds, or at least make them off until you actually reach them, then turn off the ones you pass (should solve the sound problems). I'll also completely remove the old ending and add a new one that will probably make you &^$@ your pants multiple times (hope you didn't eat anything spicy, if you know what I mean :P).

Wait, about the sounds. Who played that map on single player Steam? Id recommend it be played on WON single player because thats what I tested it on. That could be your problem.

I wait in anticipation.
But may I say Please keep the same textures.

I played it in steam. There was no problem when I played it though.

Err. What the hell are you talking about? The sentence hardly made sense. The readme clearly says to put the sounds in the ambience folder located in the valvesounds folder.

Good... don't overuse things though. The clock was great the first time, but when there were another six they kinda lost their atmosphere. The zombies were a little too un-nightmarish, maybe not monsters next time?

Textures were good and the ladeh made me jump :)

Don't expect Nightmare v2 to be a mod guys (I'll leave the modding to Jahzel). Remember I'm still going on Life Gear and I'm waaaaay behind as I have been mapping nightmare and winter_city. Expect tons of new textures in v2 though (will still keep the "neon" effect going though).

Yeah, if teh sounds didn't work and tehy were teh scariest thign in teh map, it kinda makes sense, because that map had no direction, no real reason for walking around doing really quite dull things, in dull places, with bad textures (alignment was a bit off, tbh).
the only thing that was moderately fun, was the flying head, and i almost missed that, as i was yawning.

Unless you actualy intend to make nightmare v2 scary, I wouldn't botehr as I thought it was a bit.. dull.
sorry, but it didn't yank my plank, pull my wool, feel my peel etc

an average map, rating: 2.7/5 - better luck next time.

also, it was too short.

Yes i thought it was slightly scary at the bit where a headcrab jumps out but thats all that scared me

the head would have scared me but i read it before dll

and finally the sounds didnt work cause of wrong folder placement!

He included a readme telling what to do.

You should have followed it.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-07 19:08:20 UTC Post #64723
So what you are all telling me is that the map wasn't good because of someting YOU did wrong. So thats how it is. The file called "insallaion.txt" is there for a reason.

You coulda bothered to ZIP it with the correct directory structure though.

lol.

you both screwed up.

It was the perfect storm.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-08 17:28:23 UTC Post #64909
ok i didnt think it was bad cause of my bad reading i thought it wasnt that scary cause it just wasnt only the headcrab scared me cause it jumped out of nowhere!

the rest was clever but not scary at all
A nice attempt but to scare anyone you have to use lots of creepy noises, have say babies crying and place monsters in dark places

!!!!

HL2 will be a lot cooler to map horror maps now with more aliens and new techniques to scare people muha ha ha

Horror is like humor. Everyone needs different things to be scared, or amused.
The only things that startled me was the face that suddenly appeared in the long hallway.
I got used to the HL monsters, so they can't scare me at all.

You should redo this map. Make it larger, make it more scary, add some storyline. Add all types of horror that might scare people, so you have a big spectrum of 'potentially scared players' :P.
I'm not sure why you chose such strange textures. You have your reasons, I presume.

"So what you are all telling me is that the map wasn't good because of someting YOU did wrong. So thats how it is. The file called "insallaion.txt" is there for a reason."
I followed the readme, and I still didn't get any sounds, but I used steam, so who knows man..

My reason for not 100% liking it were that is wasn't very good, in terms of a map or being scary, so it fails in it's selling points.

Which means I gave it a half/half score, you went to some effort in this, but it could be better, real life textures are far scarier than some crazy alien timewarp.

imho, good luck with the sequel, or shall we just call it the beta_v2 ;)
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-09 04:25:19 UTC Post #64980
No keep the textures.
Just make it better by using the architecture and stuff instead of realying on the monsters.
E.g.
Make walls/ceiling close in on you.
Make floor tiles fall away at your feet.
Etc.
