the beta of my first dm map is complete, its just a small map with the ruins of a greek temple in the middle, basically a kill box, but heh ya gotta start somewhere, anyways I might upload it just to get some "constructive criticism", what do you guys think? :|
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-06 15:15:38 UTC Post #64526
a killbox? your first map? i wouldnt recommend it...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-06 15:17:09 UTC Post #64527
I wouldn't, t'be honest. It's generally not recommended to post your first maps. Maybe play them with a friend or somethin', get someone on MSN, IRC, whatever, but not proper release.

i think thats what you call it, a killbox. i was just going to post it in the maps in progress section or whatever the name is for it because i don't understand r-speeds very well and the map is a bit laggy, even on my new comp and even though its just a box. this is my first DM map, i've already made a SP map (woo freakin hoo) but i was hoping that an experianced mapper could help me by downloading it and giving me some suggestions, i just don't see how i will get any better without some other people's input, but if you guys don't want me to post it then i won't.

No, go ahead and upload it to the Unfinished Maps section. It's just not wise to post your very first map as a finished map, but it's a good idea to ask others for tips. Though searching for articles and tutorials yourself is also a very good method. And there's always the 'trial-and-error' method... ;)

thanx for those links, they gave me some good advice. also, i have been using the tutorials, i downloaded every one of the tutorials and have them saved on my computer, but anyways, i'll probably upload the map tomorrow, it's called "temple"

btw, it would be better to go onto IRC and choose a few beta testers. get an IRC client from www.icechat.net (woohoo! icechat rocks!) or www.mirc.com (booo!)

i'm so confused, this may be a stupid question, but how do i upload my file, temple.zip, to my freewebs adress www.freewebs.com/hlmaps so people can download it?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-07 14:53:19 UTC Post #64679
As long as it's under 2 MB, you can upload it to the Map Vault directly, TWHL will then host the file for you.

And how to upload? Well, you'll have to place it on your ftp-server... just as you would place webpages on it...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-07 14:57:36 UTC Post #64682
That is, when you want it on your webspace... :)

I see you're using Freewebs... You should find out how to get access to your ftp, as that's where you can add files...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-07 15:00:49 UTC Post #64683
well then, i'll submit it to twhl, but i have to figure out how to host it....

Don't link to stuff hosted on Freewebs, it doesn't work.

well, i put my map in the unfinished maps section on thursday, and i am trying to put a picture in now, on saturday, but it's not working... maybe it's because i'm on a 56k connection now, and i was on T1 on thursday, but anyways plz download my map and it would be nice if you gave me your opinion on it, it would be even nicer if you were to give me some advice. plz keep in mind, this is my first DM map....

PS the image is a jpeg, and the zip is less than 2mb

something went wrong when i tried to update my map, and then it turned into a broken link.... Well, it doesn't matter because i've updated it a little (it doesn't require those .wads) and i will try to take some of your advice and fix my level up with func illusionaries and whatnot, just 1 question, when i use batch compiling, where do all of the files go? i will type a new post when i get my map back up, for now, it is deleted.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-12 07:51:15 UTC Post #65561
Yah. Broken links happen sometimes. Probably a fault in the server when you updated it.

when you batch compile, teh files get put into teh exact same folder as teh .map you compiled

ie: if you save your .map in
C:/program fiels/valve hammer editor/maps/temple_dm

you would open that with batch, so you would browse to your .map file in Batch Compiler (going to : C:/program fiels/valve hammer editor/maps/temple_dm) and run Btahc, when you open teh folder:

C:/program fiels/valve hammer editor/maps/temple_dm

you'll notice that it's full of files, all called temple_dm (or whatever)
and taht there is one called temple_dm.bsp
teh bsp as you knwo is teh actual map fiel itself in compiled form.

Posted 20 years ago2004-10-13 10:07:45 UTC Post #65963
ahha, yeah, my spelling hasn't gotten worse, it's just teh fact that I type faster than I actually can, hence all my words have letters in teh wrong place, but generally they start with teh right letter, and most of teh time they have the right amount characters, so you canwork it out for yourselves =)

and 'teh' isn'y me leet-speekin' it's just my most common typ0

PaLO btw

did you know theres some study by a US university (michigan?) that says your brain only looks at the first and last letter of a word so i can srcmalbe the ltetres up lkie tihs and you can still read what im saying pretty well, neat huh?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-14 14:38:40 UTC Post #66480
Good as that is, there's still call for pedanticism seein' as you can have perfectly valid anagrams of other real words.

Doesn't always work so well, either, consider "garmmer", "spyhmony"; less common words are trickier.
