any new laptop should work. Dont worry about the type either. I map on notebooks all the time at school.

Should be fine. Most laptops these days should suit your needs.
Hi girls,

I wouldn't want to map with a touchpad though, that'd be crazy. Get a mouse for it, y'can plug USB mice inta laptops.

Don't buy from the high-street.

The only downside of buying a laptop, even a newer one, is it won't run HL2 and such. And even if it does, it will probably look shitty.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-24 06:20:53 UTC Post #68744
why should a new notebook don't be good enough for hl??
The last days i read a lot of articels about new notebooks and they can even
represent farcry and doom3 with enough frames.
I think/hope there will be not a problem with hl? on notebooks. or??
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-24 07:10:23 UTC Post #68751
No problem, it's the specs that matter.

Yah, a new laptop should handle any new graphics. Just because its smaller dosnt mean it sux at specs.

Not true, obviously none of you use notebooks. I have a sony vaio p4 2.66, 512 ddr. Thats all fine, but the mobility Radeon video card sux my ass. Even though it's 64mb, there is tons of stuff it simply won't run, mostly all new 3d games. It works fine for mapping though. But I guess a Pentium 2 400 mghz would work fine for hammer too.

I'm not saying there aren't notebooks out there that won't handle HL2 and Doom and such, but They are gonna be expensive.

Area-51m's and other gaming designed laptops should be able to run said games.

They cost so much more than desktops, though...

"aren't notebooks out there that won't" Hmmmm. Try again. I'm not saying there aren't notebooks out there that will run newe FPS games properly, but they are gonna be pricey.

I've had had a notebook for mapping and it was great--Id much rather a notebook instead of a PC... however I'd get a new PC because..

although the notebook is portable and you can map anywhere, you will probably only be able to map for HL not HL2.

So its a win win situation, and also a lose lose.

You decide.

My freind has a laptop that rivals most good computers, it's fucking scary.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-26 06:11:32 UTC Post #69451
I'm sure it does, but the video card is prolly mediocre at best. I mean, look at the size of videocards for desktops these days! They're freakin' huge compared to what they used to be. Hell they're basically system unto themselves. There is simply no room in most notebooks to put a powerful vid card.

Have you been listening to him?

He said that there are notebooks/laptops (which ain't the same thing btw) that will run newer FPS games, but they will cost alot of money.

I saw a ruggedised laptop for ?6,980, and it wasn't even a p4, now make up your mind as to whether it's worth it to be able to map anywhere, if I'm out I'll probably be with friends, and more than likely I'll be drunk/stoned/incapacitated and mapping will be out of the question.

I find mapping to be a very relaxing hobby that I tend to spend doing alone simply because it's one of the most boring things to watch, even if you have two people working on a map, it's still boring as smeg.

And if I had more than 3 grand to spend, I'd buy a motorcycle....
