This night I started working with C++. Although is something new and confusing for me (Basic veteran) I managed to do a simple, stupid mastermind game where you have to guess a number that the computer chooses randomly (stupid srand( time(NULL)) thing, I hate it!!!!)... What I plan to do is learn some programming stuff so I can make my own things for Half Life and write some simple things for people to work with HL coding too (if I can write it or if it?s possible to make a tut for newbies on that)... Later I will try to do some stupid games, like that Snake in the Nokia mobile phones.
Any good advice or good link???. I?m having a hard time since most tutorials out there talk about something unknown in an almost-unknown language!!!.

If you have the spare change laying around, I'd consider going to your local community college and taking either an online course or a regular course. I feel pretty well off with C++, Java, and Perl because of this.

Buy C++ for dummies - those books usually start you off nicely

i'd prolly agree with doing some sort of course, cos there would be someone on hand to help you there and then. pluss you would be given stuff like books...etc as part of the course

Yes Jobabob, I did loads of Basic back in the late 80s and early 90s. It?s true that C++ is thousands mora complicated than Basic, that needed no other thing than itself to run a program (I mean, still annoys me a little to include *.h to have access to some commands, though I see it natural and justificated in such a complex system).
What I?m trying to do now is to make some of the parts from the main function be functions apart. I don?t know if it?s good for a program (probably yes, it seems more structured this way) to make this, but I have to learn about it anyway. In my particular case, I added a function that checked out if the number you gave to the computer is bigger, smaller or equal to the number you have to guess and returns a value from 0 to 2 to the main function so it acts in consequence...
I don?t understand pretty well how it works, but worked without bugs first time!!!!.

I don't consider BASIC actual programming. I did loads of pointless QBASIC and whatever BASIC you got on the BBC micro and I didn't have a clue when it came to actual programming.

I still advise skipping C++ and starting with Java. It is honestly a much better language for begginers, efficiency means FA until you create something that needs it.

Plus if someone can write a bittorent client in Java, it's hardly just a learning language

The thing is... I want to use C++ for Half Life as soon as possible, I mean, let?s do it right, but let?s not stop or step apart from the current objectives. I see that you know Java but, what about C Jobabob?.

I would recommend the idiot's guides. I got one for Visual basic when I used to program for that and it was great! Even came with a trial version of MS VB 6! The only downside is you can't create exes with it

Maybe if you get a C++ idiot's guide, you may get a free compiler/trial version of MSVC++! I haven't actually had a look at idiot's guides for C++ yet. I would recommend dummy's guides as well, they are of a similar standard!

I was kidding Vassy :). And, well, seems to be library but, as Seventh may know, in spanish Libreria (resembles library) is the place where... they sell books. And, as you all know, I?m stupid enough to not distinguish those words :),

I started with Java and moved onto C. I've done a little C++ but I tend to steer clear of it as I like my OO programming seperate from my nonsense-pointer-based-hard-ass-source programming (meaning pure C).

Halflife could've been written in C I assure you. C is NOT a crappier version of C++ ffs.

Come on... Let?s be peaceful :P. Seems that the most important C++ thing is that Object oriented stuff. I?m currently trying to do some things with it ?cos Half Life looks like using it a lot.
By the way, I?m totally frustrated for 2 things:
-I can?t return a string of characters from a function... It?s so frustrating if you try to make a word game structured in functions.
-I?m unable to read the specific point I like from a txt. I know how to use that ifstream and ofstream (at least a little) but when comes to read an specific part of a txt file I?m lost.
But I?m doing little progress.

I started with Visual Basic ... One of the easiest programming languages to jump into. Then went to C and took courses for the rest.

I also reccomend starting off on something easier then C++. You don't want to burn yourself or frustrate yourself.
